My wallet was stolen on the 28th- completely my fault because I withdrew money from the ATM, put the wallet in my purse, then left my purse completely open while shopping at Carrefour. I left my info with security at Carrefour but they still haven't looked at the videos yet, only "trying their best to review the videos"---am I better off filing a police report- what can/will they do? Am so annoyed at myself for being so naive!

I think people become desperate around the holidays, even in Dubai. My blackberry was stolen from Ibn Battuta a little over a week ago. My husband got me a purse I can strap around myself now so that I can carry it and a toddler! So sorry to hear about your wallet. Hopefully the other ladies here will see this thread and be very careful. holidays are usually best times for ppl who steal...lots on your mind, lots shopping to do...not paying attention...kids with you since school is off...distractions ....very much "normal" high incidence around holiday times.IMHO

Here in Oman security guards in carrefour are now walking around the store telling people to becareful with their wallets and open handbags. Its a sign of the times I feel and not a good one. economies are not so great around the world...it has effect on how ppl act.and crime is usually on the rise in those times.. :(

Years ago when I first arrived here I was amazed that ladies shopped and left bags literally wide open in the trolleys and were off in another aisle I must admit I have never done it having lived in a few countries where you have to be constantly on guard with your belongings However as an earlier poster said this is a ver different Dubai to a few years ago - it really is not safe to leave belongings anywhere or doors open etc Its a shame but I remember DH saying this to me a few years ago ... you watch the crime start and handbag stealing , breaking in houses etc etc I said no way but obviously he was right Shame but part of the growth of the city I m afraid

Have seen someone get her wallet lifted at Carrefour checkout before - it is an easy thing to do - you get the wallet out, get card out, lay wallet down while you turn and sign and then - it's gone! Why do people leave their bags etc in trolleys here? Are they mad? This is not a safe place..............

Thanks for this ladies, dh was convinced that I lost my wallet; but somebody must have seen me withdraw the money and put it in my purse because it was next to another wallet in my purse that was untouched...my father-in-law was with me as well so this person must have been pretty quick. In any case, there have been countless times that I've done what CW said- leave my purse completely open while browsing for something at the other end...never again...

Yesterday, the cashier at C4 told me, that early in the morning, a wallet was taken away from an open ladies bag, which was in the shopping trolley while the owner was browsing through the shelves, few metres away. I often see trolleys at one end in the aisle and the owner at the other end. We can't blame the security and authorities for being lax when we are being careless ourselves. So ladies, keep the trolleys with you at all times.

While shopping at C4 a few weeks ago the staff told me to watch my bag as there have been a few incidences lately.

My wallet disappeared a year ago, I can not guaranty is was in the MOE - even though I truly thing it was. I bought a coffee at Starbucks, then did what I need to do for the day (and it was a heavy day as I had to move all my zoo out of the house for fumigation) and when I looked again for it, no more wallet. Thank you for letting us know...I am sooo bad and always forget my bag in the trolley, open, while I am catching an item in the alley.... I hope you did call all the banks and make an opposition on all your cards...

Just had a thought, there may be a group of criminals that actually watch the cash point then follow the target, it wouldn't surprise me at all, think they need to get CID on to this one.

I was walking past Carrefour at around noon or 1pm it may have been on the 28th and I saw a big commotion outside with a distraught lady and another lady with 2 kids in trolley, was this you? Or maybe it has happened again, I did wonder what had happened. I think this is so awful, have you asked MOE security to look at their cctv too. I would definitely report to police too. I hope they catch the person, it is such a violation.

I had money stolen from my gym bag at Hayya in The Lakes a few days before Christmas, I think sadly we all need to be more vigilant these days EVERYWHERE in Dubai!

Sorry to learn this has happened to you. A lady recently warned me at Choitrams in Al Wasl Road not to move away from my handbag which was in the trolley. Thanked her for reminding me but did wonder if she was recently arrived from Europe and over reacting, but she may not have been. Really sad we need to watch our backs. People are in hard times so better to reduce temptation.
