I really don't mind the stupidity as well (well I probably do but it ranks a bit lower;)) but just the underlying arrogant tone of the city gets me......people who don't hold doors open, pushing into the Metro when you're trying to get out, people just expect you to get out of their way, so many times (and its mainly women!) just push past knocking into me without a blink of an eye, talking in the cinema, pushing in at shop queues, pushing in at the traffic lights.....arhh the list is endless!!! Is it a lack of accountability thing? The vast majority of the population is away from 'home' and may feel less accountable than they would in their home environment, being judged on their behaviour by people of their own nationality, and (if they live somewhere small) by people they actually know? You get the same thing in tourists, sometimes - 'home' rules don't count when abroad - and some Dubai expats (and expats are what, 80% of the population?) at least seem to feel they are on permanent holiday. And also, because there are so numerically few natives of Dubai, and because laws and customs are often such grey areas or only occasionally enforced (decency rules, dress codes etc), there might seem as if there are no 'local' rules to assimilate to, either? I remember conducting a poll among people I knew about recycling - and even people who were passionate about recycling in their home countries often didn't bother in Dubai because they felt transient, and there wasn't a strong Dubai culture of recycling.

Hello, been lurking for a while and just wanted to comment. I know how you feel, I think that things can just get on top of us sometimes. But I think you just have to shrug some things off and just carry on. No point letting things get you down, although I guess it can be hard sometimes.

Actually the stupidity isn't as bad for me as the obvious greed and continual changes of page!

6 sales assistants at the checkout and only one actually doing anything... 12 people or more working in McDonalds at Dubai Mall... and despite being next order up, waiting 10 minutes for Kid's happy meals... was not happy about that one on the weekend.. Oh dear I sound so grumpy... maybe an early night with a glass or 2 and I will be a nicer person in the morning!?

Ah yes... the nodding when you are asking someone a questions, then discovering they had absolutely no idea what you were sayings... The 'Yes Ma'am'.... and then just doing what the h3ll they wanted to in the first place... The ... oh G0d I could go on for days! 5 years has taken it's toll.. I hope I can de-stress and become a nicer person when I finally go back to civilisation..

Mulberry - you are not alone! This place irritates the heck out of me sometimes - never have I lived in a place where people are so selfish, with little regard for others and where it takes forever to accomplish a simple task or purchase....I definitely have less patience with people than I used to have...

Mulberry - Dito to everything and what everyone is saying. Sometimes I feel Dubai is full of Fuds (stupid people with no common sense). Ive tried to chill out, but I find it very difficult as I work with some Fuds. Maybe I should call Dubai Fudsville? edited by ange74 on 30/01/2011 FUDS?? LOL Yep sounds about right most days!

your right! i just find myself speaking to people in a lower position like dog poop! and its really not nice! im such a warm person and love being around people but sometimes, its like knocking on wood, asking someone to do a simple task and its being done wrong really frustrates me! i get the feeling though that i need to see someone, im taking it out on my poor DH and he is so calm.

It depends there are aspects that are enough to make your life just down right miserable and frustrated beyond belief!! It's not an easy time to be here.

I hear you. This atmosphere in this city is very stressful, people are generally rude, arrogant and full of self importance. There doesn't seem to be any respect for fellow humans. It's all about me me me. We have very close friends who have just left Dubai after many years here, they have gone to a much larger and busier city to live, however have said strangely the stress that they faced from day to day living here has just has melted away.

No... it is Dubai. I no longer have patience when it comes to queue jumpers and I am bordering on aggressive if it happens.. also on the road I drive more aggressively.. I actually don't like the person I have changed into, but really only notice when back in OZ as it REALLY stands out there...

think its the sheer lack of common sense of people that frustrates you and makes you very short tempered living in this country. Sometimes I feel like I wanna knock peoples heads off! Go buy some cheap plates and then enjoy smashing them, makes you feel so much better, then a big glass of vino and put things into perspective that actually, we are all very lucky to be here. Dont let the little things get you down, its not worth gettting worked up and so stressed over xx

I call it cabin fever. Caused by the accumalation of the small (and not so small) daily stresses and frustrations. My cure is to make sure I get out of the country every 4 months or so otherwise I develop a bad case of it. I think it is worse if you work as you get exposed to far more of it - as well as the ones that everyone gets - roads, poor service etc etc.
