*LIKE* why IS everyone so flippin miserable here ? lol Lol, don't know. Maybe it's the rude amounts of cash being earned, the constant sunshine, someone to wait on you hand and foot, the never-ending array of shops and restaurants, too much beach time, stunning desert scenery? Enough to upset anyone ...;) super like!

well, I headed off to the shops this morning bound and determined not to let my self be scoobied by dubai itis. My resolution didnt last past the first flaming shop! Someone obviously was far too important to wait turn in que (consisting of self, and herself, with myself in front) so pushed her way in and didnt have the grace to look even the slightest bit embarassed. Despiet the fact that I was laden down with 700 pillows and 4oo sets of sheets etc and her pushing past cause me to drop them. Grrr. So in the next shop when the dimwit attached to my elbow tried to give me eyedrops when I wanted a joint supplement, and a pharmiscist when i asked for vitamins I had to really really try hard to be polite. I hate shopping...

My sister just visited for the first time - in the first two days she commented how impatient and narky I had gotten, then at the end of her two weeks, said she would kill someone if she ever had to live here..... edited by DesertBoot on 31/01/2011

I prefer the 'morning maaam' to the nasty attitudes of some staff here - for example, I will never set foot in or spend my money in Boutique 1, ever, due to the horrible snobbish staff there (I reeeally wanted to use that Ab Fab line in there - 'you can drop the attitude, you only work in a shop you know' :) And I was a shop girl for years!). Something I always noticed in the US (not so much in the UK where I'm from) was that you could be wearing a holey t shirt and jogging pants and staff would still be lovely and helpful - from what I saw, there was no assumption that you're 'poor' and don't deserve nice treatment, and that was in high end stores as well as high street! That's something I miss. I am generally pretty nice to people unless they give me attitude first, in which case they'll get it right back. I am also less patient...far less patient!

Have to agree with Kcinthecity, Captainjacky and Sausage. I'm constantly amazed by the amount of people walking around with a face like a good smacked bum, snarling at all and sundry, and generally just being downright rude to others. I can't help but wonder if they behave like this at home too. I'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around, and if you give a smile and little understanding, this is usually what you get back in return :-) *LIKE* why IS everyone so flippin miserable here ? lol

What I try to do generally is to be courteous and civilized to other people so they appreciate what it is, as it's rare to have people courteous to you here. They are usually thankful and I think this is the attitude to have, on my good days...

your right! i just find myself speaking to [b'>people in a lower position [/b'>like dog poop! and its really not nice! im such a warm person and love being around people but sometimes, its like knocking on wood, asking someone to do a simple task and its being done wrong really frustrates me! i get the feeling though that i need to see someone, im taking it out on my poor DH and he is so calm. :\:

You know, Dubai made me sullen and aggressive and no matter what the cause, I hold myself responsible for being a rude and mean person. I was ashamed at myself when I behaved badly especially with people in a 'lower position' than I was; and have consciously made an effort to behave like a decent, civilized human being. People in Dubai do treat wait staff and others as worthless. It makes me cringe and is frankly embarassing to be around. I would much much rather have someone singsong nicely to me than a shop assistant who treats me like dirt (MAC artists in particular), even then I am civil to them. This is how I was raised to behave and if I cannot manage basic civility then frankly it is just disguisting. edited by kcinthecity on 31/01/2011 edited by kcinthecity on 31/01/2011

When I read the first few posts by the OP I thought this was about how she was upset with herself at being rude to people in lower paid jobs (for want of a better description). Then somehow the lower paid job people were the topic and how annoying they are. Very confusing..... I have met a lot of people in Dubai who speak to waiters and shop assistants like they're worthless and I'm always amazed at the rudeness.

Does anyone else feel like this> That’s how I felt about a decade ago when I moved here, I think I was just rebelling from being a strict law abiding Canadian landing in lawless Dubai......now I have kids so I have to behave but I was most definitely very aggressive and angry all the time.

Skimmed through the posts but i really don't get it! Think the customer service in cafes, restaurants and shops is second to none here!! OK, so sometimes in the malls when the assistants are following you around can be annoying. But just politely tell them you are browsing and they move away. Much prefer it to the sullen, couldn't give a *&it attitude that you get from staff in my home country....... A smile goes a long way in any language....And you get that here....But definately not there! yaaaay..thasnk you cj - was beginning to think it's just me !! lol *High Five* to the staff over here Sue62! And it infuriates me when "we" say they are thick because they can't speak English... Just how much of a foreign language can we speak??!!... Me... None..... Well, i can ask a French guy to "warm my bed".... But thats beside the point!!!

well, either there's something wrong with me or i just haven't been here long enough yet LOL !!! All of us are way more laid back than we were at home - enjoying our change of lifestyle, though to be fair i think it's mainly the sunshine !! Staff in shops are just lovely - bought my teen his first "proper" shirt at the weekend but although i know his neck size i had no idea how the body would fit so i asked if he could try one on and the lovely man in Next patiently unwrapped it and took the clips out etc (i had said if he could find an open one it would be ok) and all i could think of was the miserable, bordering on surly shop staff we have in the UK !! The men in the Topmans (?? lol) are all lovely...and everywhere else i've been, though i have to admit to only going to a mall on my own 3 times so far...why do so many people here have so many problems ?? Im yet to go into a shop in the UK that does not have experienced, polite and helpful staff and ive shopped anywhere from London to my local high street. And i've yet to go into a shop in Dubai that doesn't have the same... But i HAVE been into a UK shop and had the assistants chatting across their tills and continuing the conversation throughout my whole transaction, only breaking off to tell me how much to pay..or been ignored by the staff altogether... As you said you have only been to the Mall 3 times. Once you get off EW for a while and experience the annoying Hi Maaaaaam and bad service you might feel differently edited by tally-ho on 30/01/2011 LOL !! no doubt my "mall count" will still be in single figures for some time yet :) obviously it's not my thing- in some ways i wish it was but each to their own eh ?? A few trips to Dubai malls is enough to put you off for life LOL
