well, either there's something wrong with me or i just haven't been here long enough yet LOL !!! All of us are way more laid back than we were at home - enjoying our change of lifestyle, though to be fair i think it's mainly the sunshine !! Staff in shops are just lovely - bought my teen his first "proper" shirt at the weekend but although i know his neck size i had no idea how the body would fit so i asked if he could try one on and the lovely man in Next patiently unwrapped it and took the clips out etc (i had said if he could find an open one it would be ok) and all i could think of was the miserable, bordering on surly shop staff we have in the UK !! The men in the Topmans (?? lol) are all lovely...and everywhere else i've been, though i have to admit to only going to a mall on my own 3 times so far...why do so many people here have so many problems ??

I remember before moving to UAE that I read several times online from customer service agents from different businesses--phone companies, cable companies, internest service companies etc... They would mention stuff like Middle Eastern customers calling in and being really nasty about a problem they were having and yelling and stuff... I now know what was going on... because here you have to get nasty kind of a lot of times just to get less-than decent customer service from a lot of places. I know because I have had to get mean several times myself after trying it by being nice first. So the locals are so used to having to have to get mean to get some kind of customer service around here and they carry that mentality when they go to the US (and other countries)... edited by Abaddon on 30/01/2011

urgh i so agree! i have a fifteen month old, and i don't drive so i'm on the metro a lot, me, the kid, and the pram. people are so inconsiderate! they'll push and shove me out of the way just to get in or out, they'll run to the lift to get in when they are perfectly capable of walking the ten steps to the escalators! that really p***es the cr@p out of me! the sad thing is though, i used to be such a nice person about these things, it wouldn't matter to me if someone cut infront of me or if someone wanted to go before me, but here it just seems like the whole world is in a mad race, and EVERYONE'S out to get you (or infront of you rather). i've stooped down to their level though, i push and shove on the metro, and i push and shove for the lift. i think i deserve the break! aaand it doesnt help that i'm short. like 4'11 . so i'm often looked over at a counter queue. which just pushes my bp over the limit! i mean seriously people, have a little consideration! Well I beat you in the short department!! I'm about 4'10"!! And i get the same thing, it really hacks me off when people crowd to get into the elevator at the metro when they have the choice of the escalator, I dont have a choice with my twin stroller, so I just push and shove to get in first. I never used to be like that!!

It’s definitely a Dubai thing. Since i moved back home I feel CALM and happy again and completely stress free. No more annoying robotic shop assistants that are only programmed to say “yes mammm” “no mammm” no more life threatening drivers to deal with on a daily basis. No more stressing that my children are having a second rate education. No more monotony of doing the same things every weekend. In fact it’s just great to breathe in the fresh air, enjoy lovely seasons once again and just be happy that I am where I belong, with family and friends.

maybe i should start to meditate? Or become an alcoholic, that seems to work for most expats. nothing wrong with a spot of alcoholism....cuts out the need to go on murderous rampages.

6 sales assistants at the checkout and only one actually doing anything... 12 people or more working in McDonalds at Dubai Mall... and despite being next order up, waiting 10 minutes for Kid's happy meals... was not happy about that one on the weekend.. Oh dear I sound so grumpy... maybe an early night with a glass or 2 and I will be a nicer person in the morning!? I have got better than that - MOE Macdonalds today, at front of queue, took 15 min to take order, 25 minutes in total to get a crappy happy meal......My blood pressure is still high!!! Brings a whole new dimension to the concept of "fast food"!!!

I have never come across the level of incompetency that I have encountered here. I can't tell you how many times I have been in almost tears just trying to get something simple sorted out. The frustration leaves me almost numb, can't tell you how many times I have had the equivalent of a toddler meltdown. You are not alone !!!!

I really don't mind the stupidity as well (well I probably do but it ranks a bit lower;)) but just the underlying arrogant tone of the city gets me......people who don't hold doors open, pushing into the Metro when you're trying to get out, people just expect you to get out of their way, so many times (and its mainly women!) just push past knocking into me without a blink of an eye, talking in the cinema, pushing in at shop queues, pushing in at the traffic lights.....arhh the list is endless!!! Is it a lack of accountability thing? The vast majority of the population is away from 'home' and may feel less accountable than they would in their home environment, being judged on their behaviour by people of their own nationality, and (if they live somewhere small) by people they actually know? You get the same thing in tourists, sometimes - 'home' rules don't count when abroad - and some Dubai expats (and expats are what, 80% of the population?) at least seem to feel they are on permanent holiday. And also, because there are so numerically few natives of Dubai, and because laws and customs are often such grey areas or only occasionally enforced (decency rules, dress codes etc), there might seem as if there are no 'local' rules to assimilate to, either? I remember conducting a poll among people I knew about recycling - and even people who were passionate about recycling in their home countries often didn't bother in Dubai because they felt transient, and there wasn't a strong Dubai culture of recycling. Possibly, I think that's a good observation, accountability or lack of is one of the major factors, from the Expat side. But I've also witnessed this type of behaviour & attitude from many Emiraties so how can that be explained? But for me, the whole attitude that's about isn't about following any rules, its just about plain human decency to act courteous & respectful to one another! edited by Pomegranate on 30/01/2011 edited by Pomegranate on 30/01/2011

We Recycle and love to see the bin men collect it and shove it all in the same trash lorry as the normal domestic waste, that is having sorted it into three nice sections and dragged it down to the recycling bins. I use it as maid exercise now.
