AC I feel your pain, I have a lot of trouble maintaining my weight. Constantly getting asked if you're ill, tired, getting told to eat more pies - even in jest or genuine concern is more than annoying. Relatives used to take my mum to the side when I was a teenager to ask if I was eating properly?! We frequented the doctors for tests on thyroids etc and in the end it just came down to a very high metabolism. I have to eat often to keep the weight on or it just falls off. I now eat 5 meals a day, ones loaded with carbs and protein but I keep the portion down so that I don't become too full and unable to 'fit in' the next meal. Its worked for me anyway and my weight has remained steady throughout my 20's and although I'm still thin I'm not bony anymore and don't get half the comments (insults) I used to. I also do fitness classes to give a bit of muscle tone to give the illusion of more weight. For me though I was strongly advised against cardio workouts and more for the strength / muscle building ones. I would still just have a quick check though to make sure its not an underlying medical condition.

A C : going back to your original post. If you can lose that amount of weight in a short space of time. You need to start with a medical check and ignore , carbs, protein drinks etc etc etc until you have more information. Start with the doctor, full check up and go from there as soon as possible.

When I did body pump, I put on almost 5kg and even though I change my exercise regime now, I didn't lose much of those weight gained. Maybe you could try. Legs do get a bit muscly after body pump. That's because muscle is more dense than fat and weighs more. AC, what kind of weight are you looking to gain? Is it that you're really skinny and need to fatten up a bit? Or looking to put on muscle mass - they require different approaches. I'm 1m70 and I'm 54kg I need to gain 6kg to be at my best weight I need both some fat and some muscles ! http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx The above tool can help you calculate your healthy weight range. I am pretty sure you are still in your healthy weight range, but seeing you want to gain a bit more weight then I suggest you try going to a nutritionist and to a personal trainer. From what you say above I'm pretty sure you won't need to gain fat, but muscle, which is why it is best for you to consult a personal trainer to create a suitable workout plan to help you increase muscle mass which will in turn help you look/feel larger (as I presume this is what you're attempting) whilst still keeping you healthy. Going to see a doctor for a full check up is a good idea for anyone who is trying to either lose or gain weight beforehand to check everything is in order etc, if you are losing weight rapidly there may be an underlying problem although you are still in your healthy weight range... You shouldn't need to take any pills unless prescribed by a doctor. A recommendation for nutritionist is the lady at Dubai London Clinic Jumeirah, can't remember her name but she's been recommended on here before. Personal trainers: Core Direction and Urban Energy are highly recommended on here

Ok, then increase your carb and protein intake, lots of chicken, eggs and the like. If you're building muscle then use some protein shakes - but sparingly. When you're working out, you need weight exercises over cardio, lots of load bearing exercises, less reps more weight.

AC go to the doctor for a full medical checkup and appropriate tests to rule out any medical problems. If you have a clean bill of health ask for a referral to a qualified dietician/nutritionist. Gaining weight is not as easy as it seems and while protein shakes, carbs and good fats can be helpful when combined with exercise a professional will be able to help you with the right percentages of each for your body and lifestyle. Best of luck achieving a weight where you are happy and healthy.

Then as others suggested, up your carb intake, but make sure they're good carbs. Just eat more in general.

Thyroid !! I will check this ! Where can I buy these protein shakes??? Protein shakes are only good if you want to gain muscle mass and put on weight that way - they're no good if you're not working out!

When I was pregnant with my DD, the doctor said to drink Ensure (http://ensure.com/) to help me with weight gain. Not sure they have it here...but to be honest, I hated it, it was vile. I think weight gain/loss is a significant lifestyle change and you should use the help of a nutritionist to help guide you in a healthy manner rather than trying to do it on your own. Not sure how they are licensed here, if at all, but maybe your GP can refer you?

Sounds like you need to have this looked at. Could it possibly be an Overactive thyroid ? How old are you ? How active are you ? Do you eat sufficient for your activity ? edited by jewelsmiddle on 03/01/2011

the only sure fire way to gain weight is carbs, carbs, carbs...eaten with a little fat thrown in carbs cause your pancreas to squirt insulin which is a anabolic hormone- which sends your boday the message to convert the carb to fat and store fat......and it will give you more carb cravings.... if you want to do it healthy- eat whole grain bread/rice with grass fed butter and cheese, baked potatoes with butter etc...also nuts help (you can tell these are all the things i struggle to avoid ....)

You can have mine too! Oh to be in your shoes lol But seriously if it's that hard, have you checked your thyroid? An overactive one can put your metabolism into over drive. Weight loss or gain is simply the number of calories consumed compared to the number of calories burned. So to put on weight you need to each mroe calories than you're burning off. Now to do this healthily obviously you don't want to stuff your face with high fat foods and sweets. But carb up, increase your intake of good carbs. I'd actually advise against protein shakes, these are only for building muscle and if you're seriously working out. Long term they're not good for you. edited by JulesinDXB on 03/01/2011
