sigh !! caught in crossroads, literally . .. Didn't know whether to cross over or screech to a halt . ..Blinked green, turned yellow & turned red, almost at the same time . .. took the left & got snapped from the back .. .

800 for the fine & 15 days of impounding (an alternative being 1500 dhs additional if u don't want to leave your car) . .. Bummer !!

:(

Thanks Sue and Genius!! and yea.. i'm sure i was not in the middle of the junction,if i was i would have just driven ahead then. i have been checking the police website, and i havent received any fines or anything, its been 4 days. How long does it usually take for them to put it up?! with my license, id and passport, so i also have to take the car registration card ya?!

In case i have a fine.. what is the procedure when i go pay the fine?! do i have to show them the car, or just my license in enough when i go to pay the fine in the case i got flashed when jumping a red light?! I do hope that your license will be suspended, for your own good as well as ours. It seems that you may need further instruction. Wow!! If the light was flashing green when you crossed it you haven't done anything wrong. Flashing green is a warning that the lights are about to change. I think it may be the rest of LoveGreen's post where she stopped in the middle of the junction and reversed backwards which may be the reason for Maskhara's harsh words - tbh - it does sound like an insane thing to do and dangerous [quote'> LoveGreen wrote: what happened is, it was flashing green when i crossed the line, but when i saw it turn orange i breaked and made sure there was no one behind and i reversed. i understand i should have just driven ahead, but i'm a new driver and i freaked out edited by Puffinlunde on 30/11/2012 If OP saw the lights turn to orange she can't have stopped in the middle of the junction, probably just a few inches beyond the lights. How about trying to support the poor woman rather than knock her confidence even more.

Be glad it didn't happen in Doha - QAR6000 (yes those are 3 zeros) fine for running a red light. The amount is meant to deter those with deep pockets from flouting the rules. So I guess there is a good side to this?

In his defence he says he didn't cross the red, but it must have turned red before he got to the other side (so he must have crossed orange...). I think you get caught when you leave your side orange, but don't get to the other side before it turns red! How do you know though? Do you get a text? Something similar happened to me twice last week! Was slowing down on flashing green when big SUV behind me honking and flashing lights so i had to carry on or risk being rear ended.. it was amber as I was going through but not sure if it changed before I got through .. I absolutely never do this i always slow down when they flash green but BOTH times I was in a single lane with a fast impatient SUV right on my tail, I do not know which is worse being rear ended by one of those in my small car of going through on amber, difficult to make the call in that situation. To get a text, you have to register on the police website, otherwise you can check for fines on the police website Thank you - will go to check with some trepidation I have to say Yay- no fines :)

He must have got a text as he went the next day to pay. Yes it must have been the same, 800 + 100 AED per dayx 15 days = 1500 AED + 800 = AED 2,300.

It is a fine + impounding for 2 weeks, or you pay the equivalent impounding rate for not having it impounded. Should be around AED 2,500 all in. YOu can pay this at the Police Station/RTA in Al Barsha edited by Biscuit Maker on 10/04/2012 I thought they removed the privilege of being able to pay in lieu of impounding?

I think your car will be impounded for a month....I'm pretty sure jumping a red light is one of the offenses that warrants this. Or you may get lucky and only have to pay in fine, check online after a few days.

Does anyone know where to go to pay a fine, I can't pay it online. Thanks I think you can just pay the fine when you reregister your car. not if it's one that you have to go to pay in person - these are black point and can be car impounding fines.

[ Personally the best traffic signals are the ones with timed count downs - no excuse for confusion with those. i dont think they are, we had them on trial in abu dhabi for a while a few years ago, and yes you could see when the light was going to turn green again for you, but it still meant that everyone was still going through on the red as they can just squeeze another car in when it says 1 etc etc. could you also imagine the cost to actually put in these devices on every single traffic signal, much better that they changed the signals to flash before they change of course they could make the difference between green to red a little bit longer, but then again then you would still get people trying to get through. if people were better observant on the roads they would realise when the light was going to change for them. i always look to the direction of the last change as many a time i have seen people drive defo through the red light, so i always check the road is clear first. many years ago i mean like 15 i was at the junction of mina road and the club in abu dhabi, in my car i had my 2 kids and my hubs was in his car behind me, the light turned green i started to pull forward as i always do look to my left where the last direction of traffic was coming from i noticed a truck was coming through the red light, i stopped as i hadnt actually entered the box junction he defo went through the red light, he didnt have any intention of stopping, and if i had continued i would not have been here today, and my hubs was watching all this from behind.......!!! so i always am observant at traffic junctions.

Dont most traffic lights now have the double blink before turning amber? that is ample warning so you dont have to slam on brakes, unless of course your are going way too fast and not being a defensive driver. Not that I've noticed to be honest. But the general definition of the amber light is, it means prepare to stop, but if you're already over the stop line then continue, or if you're going to fast to stop, then also keep going. Personally the best traffic signals are the ones with timed count downs - no excuse for confusion with those.

start slowing down when you approach traffic lights you never know when they will change.. edited by mushypeas on 22/01/2012 On the flipside, if the light changes to orange when you're virtually at it - keep going, as to suddenly stop, you're asking to be rear ended. And before anyone jumps on me, this is as per traffic rules and regulations. thats what worries me when i start slowing down that somone will go into the back of me !
