wow this is great stuff. thank you all. not been checking EW as been stressing over burst water tanks (x2) this week.... great fun! Will look into this more tomorrow when I'm waiting for the plumber to arrive - again! thanks all. @ Sanddy-Dogg - I've still not heard back from Emirates Holidays either - obviously don't want our business. We were thinking of Easter Holidays, but knowing now it's the height of the rainy season may have to rethink the dates. Anyone been in April? Is it so bad? Are the tracks in the game parks impassable? Air Arabia has given us a quote for 6 days/5 nights for 4460 per adult if that's any help SD.

I would recommend the Fairmont circuit in Kenya. Stay with them at the Norfolk in Nairobi. Then you can drive to Mt. Kenya Safari Club which is by the equator but at a high altitude. The scenery is gorgeous. There are monkeys everywhere and you can take long horse rides. You can then take a small plane to the Mara Safari Club (also operated through Fairmont). Excellent facilities and service. We did this trip 3 years ago and my kids then ages 3, 5 and 8 loved it.

Emirates Holidays are being a complete PITA and not bothering to give a quote. As someone who is a complete Africa ignoramus, any tips for sorting out a trip myself? Where should we fly into from Dubai? Where to connect to and who with? Should we book a safari tour or a well-placed hotel/camp and do games drives from there? Any accommodation recommendations? We will be travelling with children aged 6 and 12.

Just wondering if April/May was a good time to visit Kenya (ie is it rainy season?). This might be useful info for October. The weather right now is pretty unpredictable (just like everywhere else in the world) but, it used to rain in March/ April and dry from may through to August with the 'cold' season in June/ July.

Sorry for the late reply (real life intruding on EW time...) -- we booked everything through Fairmont and that included internal flights, transfers between the two Nairobi airports, game drives, etc -- think the only thing we paid additionally was for lunches? RE: the location of Mara Safari Club on the edge of the reserve, I had this discussion with our Masai driver Sankae (who was amazing) and he laughed and said, "The animals don't know where the Mara begins and ends...there is no fence!" He was exactly right...we have stayed closer to the middle of the Mara previously and the landscape, animals etc are all similar and breaktaking. So you don't cross in and out during your drives; you are always close to the wildlife and all of their safari vehicles from Fairmont seemed first-rate (we loved ours -- a very open 4X4). The Norfolk Hotel was also gorgeous -- we had lunch there on the way between airports. Good luck!

thank you all for your suggestions - will dig into it all some more tomorrow. @ Sanddy-Dogg - I am still waiting to hear from Emirates Holidays as we have asked them for info/quote - 4 days later.... we recently got a quote for this month and it was around 17,500 - 20,500 as we were thinking of spending an extra night in nairobi. their mara special thats on at the moment 1 night nairobi and 3 nights in mara both fairmont hotel chain. thats for 2 persons for the big cat special 5 days 4 nights. but its only valid till end of march. 1 free night in norfolk fairmont nairobi the night you land in kenya. 3 nights in mara safari club ( which is in the wet lands bordering the mara not actually in it. i have been told its in a conservation area outside the mara.) its fly in and fly out. apparently game drives are by 4x4 but in the brochure it says micro bus

we've stayed at kichwa tembo tented camp it was amazing but its not in the emirates brochure. try to find a holiday that takes you out in a 4x4 as you cant view game in a micro/mini bus. also try to find one that flies you into the camp, dont drive its scary and takes hours and hours on very bad roads.

We stayed at the Mara Club as well a couple of years ago and can also recommend it. Reading Court's post brought back some happy memories of waking up and seeing the hippos in the river:-) You also see lots of baboons on the drive to the Club from the airstrip and the drivers from the Club are very good and know the trails insdie out. The tents are fantastic - we went in winter and a hot water bottle was put in the bed every night. We spent a night in Nairobi - can't recall the name of the hotel but it had also just been taken over by the Fairmont and then went to the Mara Club, we were only intending to stay 2 nights but we liked it so much we stayed longer. the hotel in nairobi is the norfolk fairmont.

Recently stayed at Mara Safari Club which is a Fairmont property -- it was absolutely amazing. Beautiful location right on Mara River, hippoes swimming outside your tent, saw all of the big 5 animals including black rhinos and leopard, lovely swimming pool and luxurious tents. Fig Tree Camp in the Mara is a more affordable option as well. we were looking to go here but found out its not in the game reserve but in the wet lands outside the park. did you go into the mara at all and was the entry fee in the cost of your holiday? as at 75 us dollars per person per visit its expensive if not. does it include game drives in 4x4's? did you book with emirates? thanks

We did the AirArabia safari package and it was my favourite holiday! The company they used were great, the accomodation was great .... it was great! Has anyone been recently and can recommend who to book with / where to go for the best in April. We're thinking fly to Nairobi with AirArabia and hit the safari trail from there, but not having been since 1985ish it's been a long time. TIA

would recommend the Mount Kenya Safari Club and Sweet Waters Tented Camp. Very picturesque, situated at the foot of Mt Kenya that is snow-capped. Sweet Waters offers tent accomodation with all the modern amenities. A tent near the watering hole will add to the adventure since a whole lot of animals visit the spot at night. enjoy your trip!
