Long story which I’ll try to keep short-ish – I FEEL SO STUPID!!!!

Buying a new car, old one submitted for part-ex earlier this week, had hire car all week. Due to collect new car today but lastmin.com bank c*ck up with the finance prevented. Instead of collecting new car spent an hour this morning at the dealer with bank chap resigning a load of forms. All on track to collect new car tomorrow, but I’m working odd hours and needed a car today & tomorrow for my evening shifts, DH will receive new car tmrw whilst I’m at work. Hire car due back today so in conversation whilst at the dealers I said ‘no worries I’ll call the car hire folk now & it extend 2 days’.

Dealer chap was distraught at thought of having to spend extra dosh on 2 more days of hire car and said ‘I have 2 cars with me today, my company car and my wife’s, she is away, you borrow it for 2 days’ We made a fuss and said we couldn’t possibly…..that’s way above and beyond the call of duty on his part!!!! But he insisted so I drove his wife’s Ford Focus to work (in AD) and back, and drove it like a glass carriage as it doesn’t belong to me, plus stuck religiously to the speed limits as getting a ticket would prove embarrassing!!! (we're buying a Dodge, his wifes Ford is not his second co car!).

Still trying to cut a long story short …….finished work 11.30pm & no traffic on the road got back to DXB in good time despite sticking to speed limits ……got to where we live to find a huge queue of trucks outside our place & I overshot our turning by about 10 metres due to trucks blocking the turning……ars’’ I thought!!! (live at trade centre, show breakdown going on, truck city!!!). Rather than sit in the queue for 20 mins (I was literally 30 secs from the front of our building), I thought I could reverse back into the outside lane of the service road by 10 metres to where the turning is and wait for a gap in the stationary trucks so I could turn in……………there was room to do so, just……………what I hadn’t appreciated is that I was driving someone else’s car and over the past few years I have become TOTALLY reliant on rear parking sensors, no sensors, misjudged the gap I was trying to get out of and SMACK, I reversed straight into the front of a Toyota Pick Up …………… B*LL*CKS!!!!!!! Not my car, not fair!!!! Me so stupid!!!!

In 22 years of driving I pride myself of never having an accident of any kind, ever, and I go and do something that stupid, in someone else’s car, in the UAE!!!!

Thank goodness, there is no more than a dirham sized chip from the black plastic bit of the Focus’s rear bumper….can barely see it at all unless you run your hand over it, and there’s already a pre existing larger dent on the other side …… I smashed one of the headlights of the Toyota pickup ….just the glass, not even the bulb ………… the chap (Indian) seemed ok with me offering to pay for the repair and agreed it seemed daft getting the police involved, so we swapped tel no’s and he said he reckoned it was around a 200AED repair and he’d call me ……….he actually seemed ok with it all, I was VERY apologetic ….I am now just praying he is good to his word and doesn’t get funny about the whole thing ……. I will happily pay for a new headlight for him, but we’ll see if he ends up trying to fleece me or worse he calls the police at a later date :-(

I’m feeling such a muppet right now & worrying like crazy there may be repercussions :-(

Thanks for reading ………….. didn’t manage to keep it short in the end, but needed to get it off my chest before I go to bed …..I hope you understand, I hope Mr Toyota is good to his word and there is a happy (albeit a few hundred Dirhams lighter) happy ending to this tale!!

Any wise comments on how you think this will pan out always appreciated.

Night night all

LL xxx

Not to hijack the post but I had a run in with my parking garage and the garage won. I didn't go to the police as only damaged my own car but now I'd like to fix it, where can I go? I have a jeep. I did this with my husbands car about two years ago, he called the police, they laughed at him, told him they only needed a report if safety equipment was damaged (lights, etc.) and that he could just go get it fixed. He went to Sharjah and got it fixed in a day for less than 10% of what the dealership wanted.

... Too late for police involvement now 2 days later! ... Moot point because the dealer wasn't worried about the damage, but it's not too late. You can call the police anytime after the accident. Sometimes you just have to go to a police station to sort it out, sometimes you have to meet them at the site of the accident.

well all i can say is thank g0d i've never had a reversing sensor if it makes you so dependant you can no longer judge a safe distance without it ffs... my husband has one on his car and has driven mine numerous times without missing it... wonder if the dealer's wife is enjoying reading all this lol

You know there are those who just don't mind and don't get 'it' when we talk about lending and borrowing property. anyway, an accident occurred and no, it is never too late. If he went to the police next month, you will still be 'done' for leaving the scene of an accident, that is a sure thing. illegal as a moon lighting maid. For me, I just could not, ever, borrow a car, even from a friend....nooooooooooo way....it is like a gun to me, fully loaded with history and a future, and I only like to be connected to my own.

As for Mr Pick up who’s side light I broke …….. he hasn’t called, he was quite well to do, (not pj type Indian), nicely dressed and nicely spoken. He’s not called me re the 200 AED he reckons the light will cost to fix ………… maybe he wasn’t as well to do as I thought, and maybe he wasn’t insured…….but I will still pay his repair cost if he calls. Too late for police involvement now 2 days later! edited by Loopy Lotti on 05/04/2011 What is a "pj type Indian"?

It’s taken me an eve or 2 to to respond, A: to calm down from my own stupidity, and B: put together a sensible response to your replies. Firstly, I was wound up (and mortified) when I first posted, but can I please clarify that I wasn’t reversing on a slip road, or even a service road (my words were misjudged in my haste to convey my tale). It was basically a lane (off road!) into / out of a car park and my botched reversing was no more life threatening than reversing out of a mall parking space. I am a true advocate of safe driving and clocking 270kms a day, sticking to speed limits, safe distances etc with no hiccups (plus 22 years behind the wheel in London with not one accident) leads me to believe I am generally a responsible driver! Sat nights incident was a result of my impatience, and lack of rear parking sensors for which I shall forever beat myself up about! The car loan from dealer chap did take us aback, but the dealer was in receipt of a large chunk of money (50% payment for the car we were buying and are now in receipt of), he had copies of our passports, visa’s, driving licenses, and salary certs, plus we’d met with him no less than 5 times over the course of 2 months considering the purchase of our new car. He’d clocked my driving style over 3 lengthy test drives of 2 different cars in his showroom and I did check the insurance papers to confirm I was covered to drive the Ford he lent us. The car had 100k on the clock, was prolly around 8 yrs old so hardly his prize possession. Despite it being the car his wife drives, we now figure that it was probably under dealership ownership. It was very nice of him to save us a few days car hire cost and despite natural sceptism I do sometimes believe that generosity on occasion can prevail. I pointed out the dirham sized nick from the bumper when we returned the car today, dealer chap laughed and said the other dent was far worse……. He also refused to take 32aed cash for the Salik I’d clocked up! Sorry, didn’t mean to rant, just wanted to put the record straight as I feel some comments were a little sensationalist, all meant in the nicest possible way I totally understand and I did ask for comments. All taken on the chin ;-) LLx PS LOVING the new car ;-) edited by Loopy Lotti on 05/04/2011

The whole thing is bizarre though, who lends their wife's car out to a stranger, who then agrees to take it, who then precedes to drive it all the way to abu dhabi and back (not just short distances) who then crashes it, pays off a truck driver and then publicly posts the whole ordeal on a forum??? LOL Loopy Lotti you really did a good job in choosing your username! ;) Agree. But to reverse on a slip road? Borrowed car or her own car, you just don't do that!!! If that is the "norm" for LL, she should have thought about the fact that she was in someone else's car, all the more reason not to do it. Should have put a "BOB" sign in the car!!!

It is all very weird. Did the OP even check to see if she's covered on the insurance of the car?

the thing is you always have to report it to the police, because all garages should only do it with a report. if you have done that now in abu dhabi with all these cameras you might NOT be able to hide the fact. edited by busybee2 on 03/04/2011

I always want to believe when we learn to drive to stick to the rules taught us. Far to many accidents due to seeing cars reversing down roads, LL make note to self, drive properly with due care and attention for yourself and others. Do forget Dubai is such a dangerous place for driving, you risked your own safety and that of others.

Lol...how about just doing the right thing? Get the police report because that's the law then tell the dealer what happened. Far out, call me Goodie-Two-Shoes, but I couldn't sleep at night if I damaged someone else's property and didn't do everything I could to make it right, legally and morally. There are dogdgy shops around that will do repairs without a police report, but surely the owner of the car deserves a police report so he can take the car wherever he chooses if he wants it fixed. edited by Green-ish on 03/04/2011

but how are you going to get the dent in the Ford's bumper fixed without a police report?.. edited by miss balamory on 03/04/2011 apparently their are places that will fix cars no questions asked...I haven't done it, but was just treated like an idiot at a BBQ, when someone was telling me about there run in with a pole, and them just driving off, i was saying - but you won't be able to get it fixed, everybody looked at me like "you daft bint '.....i needed to remember you can get most things sorted with a few AED spare....

from the sounds of things, it's unlikely that Mr Toyota pick-up has insurance, so unlikely to change his mind.

Wow, Zaabs, you have an evil mind :) LL, just wanted to empathize, it's exactly the kind of thing I'd do. I think I'd feel I had to come clean, too. Good luck. Whoops, hadn't realized about the service road. Might not have done that. edited by simpleasabc on 03/04/2011

(oooooo hadnt thought of that till now!) Now just waiting for Mr Toyota to call re the cost of the headlamp repair .....:-( Thinking maybe I should send him a text later today just to follow up, show willingness to pay etc? Definately not borrowing anything (especially a car!!) anytime soon!! DOH! :-)

LORDY LOO LOTTI what a pickle. Ok, perhaps you should come clean with the guy who's car you borrowed. Just tell him the truth, cos you know these things can come back to bite you. bigtime. especially if it is the police, it will be mega embarrassing. Just tell him that you were destined to pay money and you should have hired the car for 2 more days. since you paid the pickup guy, now offer this guy money for the dirham size nick....and you will feel better. Honestly....you will really feel better. btw. please don't borrow anything in a while...;)
