I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this here but we are now looking for a home in AR's. We want a stand alone villa, preferably a four bedroom and would like to stay under 220,000. I've searched through propertyfinder and Dubizzle and my husband is going to drive up to Dubai this weekend and hopefully look at a few places. If anyone knows of any that are available please let me know. We need to move in mid Feb and are excellent tenants and will keep the place up very well. We have two boys, 4 and 2, and want some place that we can make friends with the neighbors and have playmates for our boys. It would be great if we could rent directly from the owners. Thank you!!

BMAP, what happens with white goods is that if they are not in the rental house when you move in (obviously, check with the landlord/agent/current tenant what will be there), you either buy them new from a hypermarket or Better Life and sell them on dubizzle when you leave the country, or buy them from dubizzle when you arrive - you can get many a bargain there from people who are leaving. http://dubai.dubizzle.com/classified/home-appliances/large-appliances-white-goods/

Quite possibly they will cost similar - I haven't got any quotes yet and we have no idea of our package structure *grrrr*. It's just that DH got a phone call from one of the accounting people who was trying make an estimate for furnished accomodation. This accounting guy is based in China and furnished apartments are apparently common there, so he was just extrapolating that to Dubai (incorrectly it seems). In any case, we will have to organise some storage here as we have some big furniture items that are pretty precious and wouldn't fit in a normal sized house easily (eg Asian antiques, furniture made out of temple doors etc.). That's bizarre about the whitegoods! So people must just get them unattached and take them with them when they move house? Wow. Ovens, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, dryers - that is going to add up $$$-wise. I can't ship those over. They are things you need up front when you move in!

Can I ask you ladies a question? In your search for places to live, did you come across many furnished villas over there? In AR or any other communities for that matter... I've looked at a few real estate sites and am getting the impression that furnished villas are few and far between. Yet my DH's employer seems to be assuming we will take a furnished villa and minimise shipping goods over there (in which case we will have to organise storage in Australia). Won't storage cost as much as shipping it over? Hope you're getting the employer to pay the costs, either way. It seems to me that wherever you look, there are more unfurnished than furnished villas. When we were looking, the price was the same whether furnished or unfurnished and you really had to like the owner's taste. If you do decide to ship your stuff over, don't forget that unfurnished means absolutely no appliances in the kitchen! Whoops, having said that, realize that our friends in Arabian Ranches were in a "furnished" house - which just included kitchen goods! <em>edited by simpleasabc on 21/01/2011</em>

In all of our hunting in AR I saw one furnished. One was partially furnished but what they called partially furnished was some patio furniture and a bed in one of the rooms. Not exactly partially furnished.

Hi am moving to AR next week in Alma I have three kids 7,5 and nineteen mums.Would love to get to know people and hopefully other kids for mine to play with.Is there lots of kids around AR and what do other mums do to pass the time while husband is working... I have seen there is a lot of shops there are they good for doing the weekly shopping etc?I also have to drive to Oud Metha road for the kids school Argh am dreading it does anyone know what the commute is like in the mornings!!!Sorry for all the Q's but just been here since sunday after arriving from Paris so have been stuck ina hotel since then.Would appreciate any help Thanks

From AR you would head onto Emirates Rd, down one junction and then in through Al Barsha south. That road is being improved hugely with new flyovers. I can get from AR to Dubai College easily in 15 mins even at peak times. I would say no more than 20 mins to Internet city. Yep 20 mins easy drive to Internet city from ar

Plum2 - thank you. That is awesome! I had written AR off for us because of commute distances, but 20 mins is quite reasonable. So hard doing this from Australia and trying to workout where all these communities are in relation to schools and work. I have not been able to find a map online yet that is easy to use... Thanks once again.

Can I ask, how long would it take to travel from Arabian Ranches to Internet City by car? Have tried to work this out on Google Get Directions but it will only show public transport and says something like an hour and 13 mins! Surely it wouldn't take that long by car, even in peak hour?
