I'd say DH and myself had more stares and remarks back home then here, Totally agree, here we don't even realise we are mixed race, but when in the UK i am always asking DH what people are staring at then I realise it's us!!! :( My son is a skinny 6ft plus with ginger hair, his beautiful girlfriend is a beefy Ghanaian, I'm (slightly) taller and much older than my chubby DH so when we're all out together we seem to attract attention. In the UK as we entered a posh London restaurant my son was asked if he wanted a table for three, assuming we thought that girlfriend was not in our party. We were about to leave due to their racist attitudes, turns out it was me they hadn't included as I was thought too old to be with them!

yes all the time. my OH is english but has very dark skin, most people think he is arabic. I am very english and very blonde... he gets the arabic menu all the time (he doesnt read arabic) and they ask him what i want for a drink etc... i think a lot of time they think he has just picked me up (i dont dress like that) it bothered me when we first moved here to the point that i dyed my hair dark brown but it doesnt bother me anymore- we just laugh...

A couple of years ago, while I was playing with DD at the playground, a mother asked me if I am looking for a new job as she need a maid. Taxi drivers ask me all the time if DD is my daughter and when i say yes, ask me where DH is from.....and then....ohhh...that's why!!!

I'd say DH and myself had more stares and remarks back home then here, one night when we were out with a big group of friends one particular female who knew one of our friends tried to join in a conversation and didn't realise who my hubby was and made a big mistake in making a nasty racial remark against him, saying I saw red would be a understatement,in the end she was thrown out of the pub and barred, no problems here though.

LOL! I've had maintenance boys rung the door bell only to be greeted as " Is Sir in? Madam in??" When I replied that I am the Mrs, the look they gave me was like "Is she for real??" People there are so shallow and I pity them. I don't need to be drapping in jewelry nor wearing designer clothes to show them that I am the lady the of the house!

I think sometimes people think my husband might have married his maid too!! LOOL I was out with my husband's niece and a local lady asked her "is your mother filipino?" And she said, "no, she is my aunt and she is American" and the lady looked all suspicious that she was lying LOOL but once... some guy rang our door so I answered and the guy goes, "oh, are you the maid?" and I said "no" and he said, "oh, you must be their friend" --like I am a maid from another house visiting the housemaids !!!!! he needed my husband for something and I said, "just give me your mobile number and I will let my husband know to call you." and his eyes got all big LOOL

after baby no.2 was born my Mom&Dad suggested that we go out for dinner, just the 2 of us and they would stay with the babies. Anyway, we were shattered and just sat at the table in silence, and then the waitress asked him what his lady friend would like to drink....LOOOOL....it looked like he had just picked me up. He told her she could ask his wife herself...yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh chin drop

Oh yeeeah happens all the time. When I refer to 'my husband' in shops, the clerks often do a double take and say "oh, you're married????!" and look incredulous. Just laugh it off, not worth bothering about. People especially give us weird looks when DH is in a kandoura...I guess they assume I'm a bit on the side...he wishes! :)

Its such a common thing here to see "Mixed Raced " families, I wouldnt think anything of it to be honest. I had a friend here and she was always looked down upon as they thought she was the maid, it so peeved her off, a rightly soo too!!!!!!!!!! Having mixed families is no different to the UK, my DH family has an allsorted family, am very proud to be apart off aswell.

i think u have to laugh it off cos I used to get upset about it but realised its their problem... Worst I got was one time in uk which is totally integrated was at a baby group with my two kids and one child has darker complexion than other and this cow came up to me and asked did they have the same father..... My jaw dropped cos had never even spoke to woman and said Emmm not sure cos I dont know who their fathers are was worth it to see her jaw drop and she couldnt get away fast enough;)

Ah, a lot of people don't understand "manners" here. I think "staring" is normal. I find it extremely rude, but even if you gave a HINT to someone to stop, they wouldn't understand why, 'cause it's not rude to them, clearly! MY DH and I get funny looks all the time - he's in Gulf Arab gear and I am in extremely conservative Western gear. That alone, apparently, is worth a head turn and a jaw drop.

(pause) "Oh...that's not the maid.":cool: To answer your question, there are plenty of multi-cultural families here...but I think that families of certain racial backgrounds may get double takes more often than others (if you know what I mean) ;).
