Either Repton or Gems. I think it is Repton ( just google the school) offer a programme where you train through them. You pay fee to the school for the training and are guaranteed a job at the end. I found it again the other day by just googling the school, pretty sure it was Repton but no chance yo check at minute as in a rush.

I may be wrong so you need to check but I thought that someone told me that Repton supports this. I may be wrong but worth checking.

sorry for hijacking this thread. I am currently teaching in Hong Kong and would like to move to Dubai. I don't have my PGCE. I am considering doing the PGCE overseas from Sunderland Uni and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on finding a job as an unqualified teacher in Dubai. What schools employ unqualified teachers and supports them through the PGCE? Thanks

if you have any intention of returning to UK AFTER doing a PGCE here, I would advise you to wait until Mr Gove has decided what he has in store for the teaching profession in terms of the training required to become one. I may have misunderstood but I thought I read he was considering abandoning the PGCE altogether!!!

On my return to the UK I expected to be able to do an induction year only according to the information I was given by Sunderland out here. The current situation in the UK, from bitter experience and as advised by Sunderland Uni there as well as other authorities, is that you will need to redo/repeat the PGCE or prepare to work as an unqualified teacher (HLTA, Assistant) on rubbish wages. edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013

Hi Noshi, I dont know about PGCE but know of some friends who are doing the MA Education, leadership management and change programme at the Middlesex University Dubai. It is a British University and I believe the fees is only 40k. The are finding it very good as they learn about teaching as well as management at the same time.. Not sure if that is going to be any use to you. Good luck! If that's the same as many of my UK colleagues are doing (being local to Middlesex), it's for qualified, established teachers who are seeking roles in Middle and Senior Leadership within schools! I think it perhaps is...

I'm also looking into the sunderland university courses, can those with experience of it msg me please? I'm based in AD but obv not tough to get to dubai when required. I have a BA degree but in tourism ,will they let me do the course? it also mentions something about needing a teaching english language qual, which I can easily do if required, I just want to get on Septembers course. pls email me at: green underscore sarahm at yahoo dot co dot uk Not sure about BA Tourism... what subject would you like to do at PGCE level? What would you like to teach in schools? It is possible for people to do PGCEs in subjects they did not study at university. However, the subjects will need to be linked and the course administrator would need to be very confident that you would have the subject knowledge to complete the PGCE. Also, it would depend on how competitive (or not) the PGCE course was. For example, the leader of my English PGCE at Manchester said that he would never even consider accepting my friend with a II.i in Philosophy & Psychology from Oxford, even though one of his A-levels was in English (I was sounding him out when my friend was thinking of a career change)... however, the course I was on was massively competitive and my friend could have been snapped up elsewhere (as he generally was for most things with his academic pedigree) that perhaps had places to fill on the course...

You don't need a Bachelor's in Education in order to do a PGCE. A BEd is generally a 4-year course which incorporates your specialism (if training for the Secondary sector), such as French, into a degree course which includes the material covered by a PGCE. It's probably more common to have the Bachelor's degree followed by the PGCE; the only people I know with BEds are those teachers who were very confident that they wanted to be teachers at the age of 18! One way or another, you will need 4 years of university education in order to become a teacher in any reputable British curriculum school. You cannot get QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in the UAE. The way it works is that anyone in their first full year of teaching in the UK needs to complete an induction year (the NQT year), which leads to QTS. It is entirely sensible to have one and takes into account that a newly-appointed teacher is not the finished article. There are standards for attaining QTS which need to be reached that can't really be covered while training through a university (and there will be Local Education Authority involvement in the process - such as training sessions - which cannot be replicated in the UAE, obviously). It is true that QTS (or, sometimes, a PGCE) is not a requirement for teaching in an independent school in the UK. However, it would be a rare recruit these days who did not have the PGCE and independent schools generally expect their staff to gain QTS, and will support this process as a state school would (I saw this first-hand as my main PGCE placement school was independent). The only real difficulty I can perceive for a teacher undertaking the PGCE course in the UAE, and beginning teaching there, is that moving back to the UK to teach might be tricky. The expectation is that the NQT year is undertaken within a year or two of completing the PGCE (for which one will need to be in the UK, as I've suggested already). Beyond that (you might want to check how long that period is, currently), QTS can be harder to gain. The guidelines are in the process of being changed so who knows what will happen! (Certainly not my husband who has been prevented from attaining QTS this year by bureaucracy because he completed his PGCE about 7 years ago!)

The PGCE that Sunderland University offers in Dubai is changing, as of September. It will be a complete distance learning course, with no in country support, as offered previously. Also it is not done through Magrudy's either.
