Zeba - My maid has access to our house 24/7. I work long hours, so Im not there to supervise, so its very important that the maid you get you totally trust and feel comfortable with. Once my maids day is finished, I dont see her until the following morning as she has an outside room and kitchen. She tends to make herself dinner, as my dogs sit outside her kitchen sniffing the air and then she goes to her room. Its only on a Friday she goes out with her sisters, blood sister and her daughter. If I go out for dinner with my husband, she looks after the dogs for us. I dont allow her to walk them, as this is my responsibility. If I go out like today, I'II ask her if she wants anything or would like to come along? Most of the time she says no and watches TV in her room. I think its best that you get a maid who has worked in the gulf before. My maid worked in Kuwait (I cant spell), Bahrain and Cyprus. I brought her over from Sri Lanka as her sister works for my friend. So I guess Ive been lucky with her. She is a wee diamond! However, one thing I do stress is that you dont fudge the line between employer and employee. As soon as you do that, things can deteriote.

I went through an agency. The salary on the application was AED 800. As per of the agency agreement, she was paid for the 1st month of service through the agency. We paid her the same for the 1st 2 months during the probation period, then we increased her salary to AED 1500 when we decided to keep her. We also pay for her food, toileteries & clothes + extra money as a bonus during Eid, xmas, her birthday, etc. As for teachers salary, almost all Arabic private schools in Sharjah pay around AED 1800-2500 with no medical or tickets as most female teachers dont get a sponsorship through their schools.

Such shocking pay, I just couldn't do it, I would feel guilty every time I paid them or asked them to do something!

I suggest you go to a reputable labour supply company, and look through the cv's. Choose one and follow their advice on salary etc as she will be told this before arriving. Ask the agency for advice re: days off and working hours. Do not give too much in the way of off-time, money etc in the beginning, and see how you get on. If you have any problems then the agency will replace the maid with a new one. If you choose a maid who has had experience in another Gulf Country like Saudi or Kuwait then she will most likely have some cooking skills.

Try to find an Emirati woman and ask her this question. She will give you a more realistic view of a maid's salary in this country. I know what Anon means by this. Most of the ones I know pay substantionaly less than I usually see mentioned on here and have a completely different style of employee/employer relationship. The tend to be strict as well and not many I know give weekly day off. They have had the same ones for years and have yet to hear the sob stories or have any drama like I read on here. My advice is to go thru an agency and as Claire posted give the raise as initive. I pay 1500 monthly and even though we agreed it does not include food /toiletries I always give it. I also give one day a week off (even though people tell me not to) because I just find it vile how people who have the luxury of the extra help treat them like employing them is a sentence. I allow mobile phones but I did not buy them nor do I buy the cards. I really don't want someone miserable in my house. However when I first hired a maid I was alone and she completely took advantage of my ignorance as an employer. The more I gave, the more she wanted. The more I listened to her sob stories, the more she sobbed (always for money). When she felt very friendly with me she became very lazy. Then the sneakiness. So in these situations you can be too nice. You must establish a line. Everyone has their own style. As I said use an agency because if either of you is not comfortable or happy and it is under 3months she will be replaced

If you fully trust her and want her to work then I would allow her access to the house while I am out. If you are unsure, or want to wait until you trust her then do not let her roam the house during the weekend when you are out.

why do you think i would do that spongemonkey??? its been 3 weeks since i hv moved here, and never have had a maid....but i am planning to get one on my visa.......so i thought it would be a good idea to be aware of different issues before getting into it as it is a big expense for me....does that mean that i am trying to wind people up????

Are you deliberately trying to wind people up ? You seem to already "know"quite a bit about maids so I am wondering why you are asking these questions on here?

For us it was the lack or privacy. We had to be aware at all times that someone else could walk in. I guess it's not so bad if you have a lockable door between their room and the house but our maid's room was in the house.

indian and bangladeshi maids come for a little cheaper i think around 1000 dhs as they need a lot of training when they come here. you have to pay for thier food, medicals, clothes and all + occasional gifts. i have not got one yet but i am seriously thinking about it. another question i have is what is the worst or annoying part of having a full time maid???

Try to find an Emirati woman and ask her this question. She will give you a more realistic view of a maid's salary in this country. BTW, a Philippino manager at McDonald's makes 1500 a month on average. An Arab teacher here can make 2500 a month. That gives you an idea of average salaries in this country. My maid's son in law earns 1000 a month working in Karama - she is laughing compared to him! Who pays her granchildren's school fees? She does.

Ive give my Sri Lankan maid 1500dhs per month. I only give her gifts at Christmas and her Birthday. I dont pay for her food, clothes or toiletries, after all, my company doesnt do that. I live in a arabic house, so she has her own quarters, bathroom with an ensuite (I put in cable TV and a Flat screen TV) and a fully equiped kitchen (which I equiped). She told me that even back in her own country she didnt have this. What I expect in return is a 5 1/2 day week, 8am - 7pm, dinner to be made every night for me and my husband and a clean house, with clean ironed laundry. She also looks after my 5 dogs (Fur babies).

An Arab teacher here can make 2500 a month. That gives you an idea of average salaries in this country. My mom works in education in Dubai & I just asked her about this, as it seemed odd. She said that Arabic teachers would certainly earn a whole lot more than that. Even Arabic teachers from much poorer countries would earn, at the very least, double that amount. Thanks for this thread, Zeba. I'll be watching it with interest, as I've been meaning to ask the same myself. I'm not saying all Arab teachers make that much, but I know as a fact that a good number of Arab and Indian teachers do.

The minumumwage for philippinas working here is 1475 dhs. Our housemaid has been with us for a few years now so she gets mire than this due to her earning annual salary increases and bonuses. Personally I think its better to incentivise with bonus payments than start off on a high salary. edited by Clairehdp on 22/01/2011 edited by Clairehdp on 22/01/2011

Officially, it depends on the maid's nationality. Ask the labor recruitment offices and they will advise. I voluntarily pay for food, clothes, toiletries, and medical expenses. My current maid needs a lot of dental work that she's been putting off for years due to financial circumstances, and I've volunteered to pay. With my last maid, we increased the monthly salary by 50% after the first year of work, gave her a "gift" to help pay off some blood-money dispute back home, gave her a "gift" to pay for her kids' school tuition, but she still ran off when I was 8 months pregnant. Moral of the story: be kind but not excessively so.
