Tailbone injury

Is there any point in seeing a DR about a bruised tailbone? unless it's fractured. I went down hard well over a week ago and I can walk and move and stuff, but sitting and getting up from sitting is sooo painful. I get in and out of the car like an old lady now. I took a few advil but from what i've been reading online, there's not much you can do and it takes a while to heal. I thought after a week or so it would start to feel better but it is just as painful as the day it happened. It's not even like it's 10% better.
any suggestions?
thank you

As most posters suggested, even though not much can be done for the tailbone itself, it may be best to have it looked at in case other parts are off kilter from the fall. Many moons ago, I slipped on icy concrete stairs and bounced down 5 steps on my behind like a rag doll and ended up looking like a macaque! It was so bruised (so was my pride) and painful, and impossible to sit. Being a student a the time with limited financial resources, I just "grinned" (from teeth clenching) and bore it. But it took months for it to feel "normal" again. But fortunately I don't have any long term ill effects even after falling many times on my behind from skiing since then. I hope you get it sorted out and feel much better soon!

I feel very lucky after reading the posts below. I slipped and fell down hard on a stone floored shower. I went to the doctor and he said it was probably fractured but there was nothing he could do. He recommended getting a rubber band to sit on. I had real pain and trouble walking for a few days but it soon started to get better. After the pain had gone I went white water rafting and all the bouncing up and down on a raft for two days caused it to ache again but not nearly as bad as before. A few months after it seemed to have healed I was smacked hard on the backside by somebody riding past on a motorbike and it was really sore for a while after that. But just to put your mind at rest a little, since then I've had no problems with it but I am slightly paranoid about landing on it or banging it.

I fractured my tailbone 4 years ago and didn't go to the doctor as I knew he couldn't do anything. Bad idea. When I finally went after 12 weeks of discomfort they found that I had knocked my spine out of alignment with the impact. An oesteopath sorted that out quick smart and the relief was enormous. The tailbone fracture took a further 3 months to heal fully however as Abaddon says long periods of sitting can still be uncomfortable so consider investing in a soft ring (like the neck pillows) for long haul sitting.

uI fractured mine around 4 years ago and the Drs can't do anything... it took mine maybe a month to 6 weeks for the initial pain to feel 10% better & probably like 6 months till it stopped hurting when sitting. to this day I still can't put pressure on the tailbone. on one leg of a flight to Japan my seat was putting pressure on my tailbone no matter what angle I sat & I was in pain for that 4 hour flight. then last September I flew to the US & my seat also was doing the same- and that was a 14 hour flight! I was in pain for a good 2 weeks after! incidentally, both of those were older aircraft as I usually haven't really felt pain like that on flights in newer aircrafts. tailbone injuries can often be with you for the rest of your life :( my friend fractured hers when she was around 10 years old and got pregnant in her 30s and the pregnancy put pressure on her tailbone and was in pain- I am now afraid to get pregnant because of this (though I won't stop trying- just scared of the pain) one thing you may want to try to find is a cushion with a piece cut out in the middle of the back edge to relieve some pressure when sitting- it might not do much for your initial pain but it helped me a bit during the healing time. of course because its a medical cushion it wont be cheap... I got mine from the US so I dont know how much they would be here... you should see a Dr though to make sure... hopefully its something else! edited by Abaddon on 30/01/2011

If not the Dr, what about a Chiropractor? You may have put something "out". After birth of DD I had a huge amount of pain in my tailbone - and all the symptoms you describe, finally went to a chiropractor (I had been to the osteo, but after repeated visits didn't get any relief)...anyway with me it was apparently the sacral illiac joint......Anyway the Chiro i now go to, does the chiro, but also physio, so if you need massage, ultra sound, heat pack, ice massage....it all happens after you have seen the chiro, and I think is all included in the price (350) Let me know if you want the details....it might give you some relief....

I hurt my tailbone a couple of years ago it took months before it wasn't painful. It depended on what kind of chair I sat on whether it was sore even after a couple of months think you should get it checked.. i didn't ,but probably should of.

I would go to the docs just to be sure there is no other injury there, generally pain is decreasing after a week and you sound like you are still in agony.
