I just want to defend Phillipina maids - mine is fantastic, and my sister has always had phillipina ladies work for her and they have been fantastic. AS with any society I think you will always have stirrers. When I was interviewing I interviewed a "great Sri Lankan maid - checked her references, each lady I spoke too, said I would be lucky to have her. I had her come for a trial...at the end basically she told me she wanted to start at 8.00am and finish at 6.00pm .... I said to her that would not be possible as I was expecting a new baby (before the trial I had outlined the hours) - she told me all the other families she had worked for the kids were in bed at 6.00, and she wanted to take babysitting jobs in the evening, to suppliment the above average salary we were offering. Needless to say I said good luck, and no thank you....she was quite indignant. I found out later, that the maid in the compound who had introduced us, was also trying on the same malarky. So it's not about nationality.... just one tries it and succeeds, so some of the others think its worth a shot.

It's an accident of birth. There's nothing you can do about it, be grateful if you can afford to pay someone to send their salary back home. The same kind of thing happens with some European countries as well, it's not confined to "poor Asian" nationalities. My salary is always going back to the UK to support my 'supposedly independent grown up children!!!! In our culture, the grown up children send money back to the parents. My parents have 7!! Don't know how they did it all those years but definitely reaping the reward these past 10 years 8-)

I have also only had Filipina maids and never had any trouble. I have treated them well, and in return, I get a good service. Exactly the same as my employer treats me well and I work well for them because I am happy and rewarded. As a previous employer myself, I find that you will always get some bad eggs in the basket and no matter what you offer in training, motivation etc etc they just will not fit in with the çompany'. Nothing to do with colour, country of origin etc, but to do with not suitable for that position for whatever reason. It is hard to find good employees, and it is also hard to find good bosses too! True, to be honest I'd be miserable if I were most of these maids working for probably less than 2k in most cases. Being away from home and having not much of a life here. What a depressing existence, and having to do it to provide for family back home who rely on them. Where I come from, AED1500 is a starting salary of most fresh graduates. I am not sure about the starting salary in the Philippines but I know that my maid who has a HR qualification never work in HR as there is no job available. She told me the story of her compatriots who are stranded in Kish for many many months...waiting.. for an opportunity to come back here to work. Some with no money and have to beg from others and some who committed suicide as they feel hopeless and helpless. <2K might be little to you but you have no idea what it meant to the family waiting back home. Personally, I am lucky that my own country still have an abundance of jobs available that very very rare you would find one that would come here without his/her family in tow. Another thing, it is important to remember that in our regions, there is no such thing as "living on the dole". There is no welfare office to go to every week to claim benefit. You don't work, you and your family would be starving. edited by Goofball on 23/01/2011

I know that was a massive generlisation on my part, there are obviously a FEW lovely ones, as with anything. But on the whole, the ones I see day to day, they look miserable mainly and I don't think they are suited to the role.

We have a Filipina and she is fantastic; been with us for 8 years and helped us with our three kids. We've looked after her and she looks after us. Always hire someone who has been recommended by someone else.

Why do expats here employ fillipinas, they don't seem suited to house maid roles at all? Just curious. I agree, although there are some lovely Fillipina housemaids out there, they generally dont seem to have the personal qualities for the job. Unfortunately, due to their country's economic position together with mass population, they will always be looking for housemaid (or any) jobs. In my experience Indonesians are a better choice.

stating that maids can go and work part time outside of their full time sponsored job?? This I was TOLD this morning and just wanted to clarify with all you gorgeous knowledgable women out there!! :) I've read on this forum in the last two months or so that it WAS possible to allow your maid to legally do part time work - as long as you (the sponsor) gave a no objection letter & it was all documented through the MOL ie who the other person/family are that the maid was working for............they cant just randomly work for ten other houses say but if properly documented it was ok........ someone (hopefully knowledgeable and gorgeous as well!) definitely wrote that they had organized this for their own maid and it was all above board.....I took notice cause I wanted to know for my own lady but just haven't had a chance to enquire as yet. edited by Pomegranate on 23/01/2011 edited by Pomegranate on 23/01/2011 edited by Pomegranate on 23/01/2011

Come around to my house and see my maid working. You will go home and get a cattle prod out, I promise you. I would not let her go home. Make her work. Longer hours. Harder work. Let her really have it now. ETA warn her that if she quotes from her contract again that you will take her to immigration to sit in a holding cell until her contract is up. edited by Servants Quarters on 23/01/2011

If this is coming from Filippinas, this is what they have understood to have been told by their Embassy. Perhaps best to contact the Embassy direct?

To be honest why don't you allow her to leave then. Cancel her visa, send her home. It is not an option money or flight home and then put an employment ban on her. Gosh do I sound nasty! No - i think of the ban as protecting other families rather than being mean.

Forfeit the ticket and, if she had not fulfilled the term of her contract, be faced with a ban should you choose to send her back......to quote the wise SQ, BBB time!

well if you are going to cancel her visa, then you have to pay for her to leave the country - so she has to have the ticket...... would not be doing her any favours if she is treating you like this...... Also, if she is not particularly good, or you feel that she would do the same thing to another family, please place a ban on her - so that others are aware that she is difficult and disruptive to your home.....

Oh that's nothing, I was told the otherday, not asked, told, "Have you read my contract x2" as she wants ME to ask her to leave, she will not say that she wants to leave as she would then forfeit her ticket, although she WANTS the money, not the flights and her holiday pay! Its fun and games!! The saddest thing is that the kids don't really like her.......

I think Izzy is right. It is unlikely to apply to domestic staff as who would go to the expense of sponsoring someone, have them living in their home, pay for medical, food etc for them to be allowed to work elsewhere on your time and dime????? Makes no sense!

There was a thread about this not may be a couple of weeks back. You should tell your maid if she thinks she can find a better job then go. Have you ever noticed that the advertisment which the maids put on the classified section always says "European, American etc" thats cause we are all soft touches. I've been right mugged off by a maid in the past and now quite harden to their sob stories etc etc etc.

no you don't. As soon as she starts, give her something to do - literally cut her off as soon as the words start coming, ask her to clean the fridge, or all of the kitchen cupboards, or wash all the children's toys..... something dull and time consuming - am sure she will get the message, eventually.

There is a new law which allows part time work but this only applies to those covered by the Labour Law - which does not include maids. I seriously doubt that this will ever include maids..... let me guess, your maid told you?
