Transfer a vehicle when owner no longer in the country. Strings attached...

The owner of a vehicle has left the country and will not be returning. He owns the car 100% i.e. no bank loans. From previous threads I see that it is possible to give a third party Power of Attorney to sell the vehicle on his behalf, and I am clear that any outstanding fines and the prospective owner's insurance will need to be paid prior to registration. However, the 'string attached' is that the registration for this vehicle expired at the end of October. Does anyone know what additional penalties become payable in this situation?

I just had a car title transfer completed in December. The registration expired at the beginning of November. I asked specifically then if there would be additional penalty for registering the car late and it was the usual 5 AED per day late answer. As long as you have a letter of power of attorney (probably in Arabic) to show it to RTA it should be ok (unless the car owner has been "blacklisted" for whatever reason), a copy of the owner's driver's license and passport as well (sorry, am not 100% sure, just know that the owner usually has to be present at time of title transfer) and have the car already insured under the new owner's name. Just need to fill out the application form, bring along a passport copy of the new owner and the insurance policy copy. So when I did the transfer more than a month later, the process was a piece of cake. If I am not mistaken, I did not end up paying the late fees either. Good luck!

Thank you Babyrat (any relation to the Mother of a rat I saw in my garden last night?!) - very helpful. I will call the RTA tomorrow; just wanted to see what I could learn tonight. Not that long ago it was 5AED per day that the registration was overdue. Are you saying also that the car is no longer insured as well? Your best bet is to ring the RTA they will let you know exactly what you will have to do. I just recently had to sort out a car which was under a company registration but the trade licence had expired some 5 months. Everything is possible in Dubai just takes time and patience. If your selling the car to a dealer they will do all the paperwork for you. I took the company car to Sun City which is right by the RTA office in Al Barsha. The guys are nice especially the owner Asif. He actually sorted out everything for me. Helps when they speak Arabic as well.

Oh dear - sounds like youv'e been left with a whole lot of pooh to sort out! Sorry can't help with what you can do but I would think the registration would need to be renewed and the fine paid.....hopefully someone else will be able to advise you better.
