Ok, so what’s the best way to handle this…

I handed in my notice last week and am working my 30 day notice period. From my understanding everything is fine and the company is being supportive, equally I am doing my best to make sure I do a professional handover and just be respectful to them in this time.

Anyway, last night I had an accident in that I broke my right wrist, I didn’t realise it was this extreme until I woke up this morning in agony so I went straight to hospital at 8am hoping to then be at work for 9 which is my starting time. I had to wait for an appointment so attempted to text my boss at 8:20 to mention I may be late (with my left hand and I am a rightly), just then I got called in to the doctors so only managed to send my text at 8:55. When I then arrived at the office at 9:45 my boss had already sent an email to my head of HR cc’ing me in claiming that I text him at 9:05 saying there was an emergency and would explain when I arrived and now I want to know what the implications of this will be since this is now going to go in my ‘file’?? What does this mean, and will this ‘file’ cause me any problems when my last day comes with gratuity/settlement etc??

I may be being paranoid but I don’t understand why he has done this, especially since I’m leaving anyway? (I’m also sore and emotional)

I'd be furiously upset if I were you, isn't your wrist in plaster as proof of what you were doing? Is he saying you pretended to break it to get a lie-in? Is he the reason you've handed in your notice? As you haven't got a job in place for when you leave? Sorry if you've mentioned this before, I've missed it. He sounds a good reason to want to leave. I'm longing to ask what nationality he is, but that's probably racist - merchant bankers are the same the world over, nationality is no bar :( Yep, wrist is fully encased in a cast (he will not be allowed to sign it) – obviously I did it on purpose to get out of working my notice period?? He still made me visit HR in person to ‘explain myself’, they were equally as considerate. Today is a new day, he acknowledged my existence in the corridor unlike yesterday when he couldn’t bring himself to look at me. As you have correctly guessed he is one (of a few) reasons I am leaving. I just can’t deal with such an unprofessional attitude from a superior and I get no support from anyone else, he has also previously made very inappropriate gestures which is another thread completely. I am trying to leave on the best terms possible though as you just never know when you might need a good reference (if that’s still possible). No offence intended on anyone but since you asked, his nationality is Syrian and I’m British.

What does "impost" mean in this context, please? Quoogle gives: impost1 noun 1 chiefly old use a tax, especially one on imports. 2 colloq the weight carried by a horse in a handicap race (see handicap noun 3). ETYMOLOGY: 16c: French, from Latin imponere; see impose. impost2 noun, archit the upper part of a pillar, where the weight of the arch, vault, etc rests. ETYMOLOGY: 17c: from French imposte, from Italian imposta, from Latin impositus imposed or placed on. So, is it an imposition, by extension?

Today he had to keep face as he had already sent the email to HR and he would have looked like a tw@t if he let it drop straight away. Tomorrow, if you feel inclined, smooth it over by saying you are sorry for the impost and thank him for his understanding (even though he was a tos$er). It is possible that he is upset you are leaving, even if he didn't say or show it, and this is his way of acting out. Regardless I would think the worst they could do is withhold a mornings pay and refuse to provide a reference. Best of luck for tomorrow.

I do think that the personal touch might be best. Tell him of your concerns regarding your file and the implications for your gratuity. Let him see that you are indeed injured and explain about your hospital trip. I hope it works out for you. I do hope your wrist mends quickly and that you are more comfortable soon. x;)

Thanks to everyone else for your advice, I tried to talk to him at the end of day but it didn't go too well. He was so angry that I was late, I don't understand how I don't get an exception for a broken wrist? He said I was taking liberties as I'm leaving.... Oh well I guess I'll be leaving the company in bad favour then and with broken wrist for job interviews....great day!

What ever happened to calling your boss/colleagues when you're going to be late or off sick? I'm not just talking about the UAE (I ran teams in the UK and Europe for far too many years). I'm fed up with people texting me saying they will be off sick today rather than having the courage and courtesy to call me. Fine, if you get an unanswered or switched off phone then you can send a text, but at least try to call, as you can then explain what the problem is and how long you expect to be out. Rant over. Plain and simply because he asks us not to. He has two kids and a wife who he drops off at school/work in the morning and asked our team to always text him as he will be driving about and unable to answer..... edited by KaceyC on 12/04/2011 If that is how he directed you then you did the right thing but as a general rule I am with pinks. So over text and email sickies.

Wouldn't it have been easier to call and actually speak to him? I'm sure you were in pain and under a great deal of stress but wouldn't calling have been the easiest and quickest option under the circumstances rather than trying to spell out a coherent text message? That said, I have sent emails at 3am because I was just finished upchucking and didn't want to have to wake up again (unless for further upchucking) when I knew my boss was at work. edited by marycatherine on 12/04/2011

Yup go and speak to him personally and I hope you still have the text message which states the time you sent it. Does he not understand that maybe huh, shock, horror, that sometimes texts get delayed due to lack of signal and other technical errors?

KaceyC, why dont you ask him directly? You could also put the circumstances and timeline in writing and give him one while also CCing HR about the accident.
