Is this normal or is he comfort feeding - I think he is over doing it as sometimes when he burps he brings up a little sick but if I stop him after 30 mins when he falls asleep - burp him, he then wakes up and wants more food. If I don't burp him within 15 mins he wakes up in distress as he needs burping and then wants more food so it seems a vicious cycle.

I do have a lactation consultant and she feels that the latch etc is fine so I would really welcome some additional advice.

Hi! Had the same problem. The midwife put him on the scale before and after breastfeed. We thought I had enough milk, but he did not eat/drink enough during a 30 min session. Can be an idea to do the same so you see if it is comfort or need of food...

Concentrate on baby's feeding. Is he feeding or suckling?, can you feel the pull and see the swallowing or is he just pacifying in which case remove from breast and give a dummy/pacifier. Hope this helps! Thanks Nutty - last night I did use the pacifier after I felt he had fed enough and was suckling for comfort. I still held him in my arms but the pacifier I feel did make a difference.

My midwife recommended no more than 30 mins each side. Appently it takes 60 muscles to BF and only 4 to bottle feed so it knackers them out. However, i would never let the baby fall asleep at the breast. I would walk my fingers up and down the spine to keep awake and finish a feed, burp then change it's nappy before putting down for a sleep. Baby always fell asleep awake alone in crib to start good habits and maintain them. Baby continued to feed 20 mins each side until 4 months then suddenly dropped to 10mins each side one day. Concentrate on baby's feeding. Is he feeding or suckling?, can you feel the pull and see the swallowing or is he just pacifying in which case remove from breast and give a dummy/pacifier. Even if it is comfort, at 15 days u should prolly give in.. :) But yea, my DS has gone on for 90mins and thereabouts when he was born...

Very normal for such a young baby. Mine did the same. The posseting too (and some!). It's hunger and comfort, but that's ok. Sounds like you're doing a great job!

make a flask of tea, get an insulated mug, the tv remote and some biscuits and snuggle down on the sofa... I still use long feeding sessions as an excuse to get out of all household chores!!

well, he knows if he's hungry and is letting you know by wanting to feed - all babies are different and so some will feed slower than others. He's also waaaaay too young to be talking about "Bad Habits". He's still getting used to being in the big cold world after 9 lovely months spent in your warmth, so, well, it's kind of understandable if he likes to snuggle too... if that's what he's doing rather than feeding. You're doing really well - just don't analyse so much - and go with the flow.

Hi I know how demanding breastfeeding can be, my son used to do the same, sometimes I would have to do 2 cycles on each breast, and sometimes I would feed him for an hour, get ready to go out then he would be screaming again for more milk! Im sorry I cant offer any advise, I just wanted to say I know how you feel and how draining it can be. I just kinda let him have as much as he wanted. I did a lot of feeding on demand, it was only when he was about 3-4 months old it started to get better(sorry) but he may be going through a growth spurt and needs a little extra. good luck
