I am about to embark on IVF at the age of 40 and as you can imagine am more than a little scared. We have been trying to conceive for 6 months (met late in life and have no other children) and then we tried Clomid twice with no success and the doctor has now recommended we go for IVF. I have bought books and read all kinds of things and to be honest am feeling more than a little flat even before we begin as such little success at my age and such a high chance of miscarriage. We go to see Dr P at Conceive next week and would love some advice/words of encouragement please! Oh and some baby dust would also be so treasured! :-)

Well I am part of the gang that say 40 is the new 30 :) DH and I also met past my 40th birthday. One fine day I went to see my Gyneco to tell him we wanted to have a baby, what were the chances etc. I was then 42 and he did say that statistically the chances are minimal but told me to go away, try for 6 months and if nothing happened come back for further discussion. We tried that same week and SURPRISE! Baby twin butterfly was in the oven! Now he is a gorgeous (and I must say a bit naughty at times) 9-month old boy. Just relax and have positive thoughts. Try Yoga which is great for many other things as well. It may well happen naturally. I know a couple back home who had lost hope and ended up adopting. A few months later, once the stress was gone, they conceived naturally :) Lots and lots and lots of baby dust coming your way xxx

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to relax and go with the flow. I know this sounds tough but if you have the mindset from the beginning, it will make a huge difference. Me and Hubby started our treatment in October and I was adamant from the very beginning that I wasn't going to work myself up about it and worry about stuff as really it was out of my control. As a result I didn't have any hormonal bursts etc and I found it all straightforward. The hardest part was after egg transfer as there is a whole drug regime you have to take which nobody had told me about. Hubby and I both decided that the way to think was that we didn't have a baby and if we didn't try we definitely wouldn't have one so anything that happened was a bonus! I am happy to say we are now 11 weeks pregnant and in fact found out last week that the egg split and we are having identical twins :-) So there is always hope but really try not to put pressure on yourself as I firmly believe the mother's mental state can have an effect on the outcome! Good luck!!!!

Maplemini. Thank you so much. I really really hope that 40 is the new 30. I am so anxious and so hopeful and your words mean a lot. I keep being told to not stress out which is so impossible in this situation and even my mom just says what will be will be and she is normally so positive that it makes me think she secretly thinks I am too old. I so hope not and am praying so hard that this will happen for me. So did you conceive with IVF and then naturally? How lovely and what a nice story. :) Thanks again.

40 is the new 30 :) dont let anyone or anything discourage. i was trying for a baby for almost 2 years but nothing happened. took 4 different clomid cycles but nothing. did lots of tests as well as my DH and there wasnt any fertility problems. i just thought thats it, lets do ivf. it worked! and 2 years after that i got pregnant naturally (no clomid no nothing). be patient and get some support. when i used to feel a bit worried i used to tell my self ' i am doing everything i can do, if it works great if it doesnt then im sure god know whats best for me' and oh... fertitlity friends forum was a very good source during my treatment. lots of baby dust ur way :) ;)

Wow - thanks so much. I thought I would go into this with a determination not to let it get to me and take over my life and already I am obsessing and I havent even started the treatment yet. I have had to stop buying books etc and am really now just trying (desperately) to chill about it but how hard it is!! These posts really help me and Niggly Congratulations on your pregnancy!! :-) Am so glad to hear your comments as we have drastically changed our diets for the last month and cut out alcohol and caffeine so really doing all we can healthwise. Even me who is generally a low carb girl has gone full on for wholegrains, fruit the lot as was horrified to hear how bad a low carb diet can be. My DH will be tested early next week and I had surgery last year to remove fybroids and have had tubes etc checked and am told all ok so fingers crossed now for DH. Am trying everything possible re diet! Holly - you give me such hope! :-) Thanks so much ladies. I am really trying not to keep obsessing about this with my DH and as it's quite a private thing (ironic that I am saying this on a forum for all to see) we havent told any friends so this is such a great outlet for me and so much appreciated!'

Don't let your age put you off. Who knows, you may conceive naturally without IVF. DH and decided at 36 that we were finally ready for children. It took 18 months to get pregnant! I had passed my 38th birthday when I had my DS. Now at 39 I am pregnant again and this one just took one night :) so you never know. 6 months is not that long to be trying, but I understand how you feel about age. When we were trying for our DS, DH cut out alcohol and cut back on caffeine and the next month I was pregnant! It is amazing how these interfere with fertility. Have either of you been tested to see if everything is ok?

Dear Confusion As another fellow IVF-er I just want to wish you luck and strength. I hear Dr P at Conceive is great (my friend was successful with him). Yes your age is a factor but there are plenty of success stories out there from women significantly older than you. I had 3 failed cycles before my 4th successful one. Was ready to give up because of the mental / emotional stress but Dr convinced me it was a numbers game and to keep trying... now i thank my lucky stars every day that I kept going :-) Good luck and keep us posted. Sending you lots of baby dust xxx

Just wanted to wish you good luck confusion as a fellow IVFer! I have read good things about Conceive and there are many people that have been successful at over 40 so you have every reason to go into it with positive vibes. Lots of baby dust xxxx
