Breastfeeding Issues

Hi! I will start this post off by saying that I am an experienced breast feeder. I just had my fourth child and I breastfed my other children for extended periods of time with no issues. That is why I am so surprised to find myself in this situation. My son is 5 weeks old. I have plenty of milk and no engorgement issues. Breastfeeding started off without a hitch!

Now I am in extreme pain from cracked nipples! My breast pad even had blood on it the other day! They look horribly cracked. I am constantly putting cream on them but that probably doesn't help much considering that I am always feeding.

I understand that if breastfeeding is painful that the latch is wrong. But his latch appears to be correct and this cracking started around week 4 and not before. If I were a first-time mother, this would have totally put me off breastfeeding. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Hi Ladies! Thanks for all your concern. Things are slowly getting better and I discovered that maybe his latch was a little off even if it didn't look it. I am now breastfeeding with both hands, using one hand to hold my boob into his mouth rather than using that hand to hold a phone or Ipad! lol I had become a very lazy breast feeder and I was always using electronics while feeding but I stopped doing that, at least for the time being, and I can see an improvement already! Note to first time mothers: Put away your electronics in the first few weeks of breastfeeding to help your baby latch.

Oh Anon, with the sleeping and now this bubba number 4 is putting you through your paces! What cream are you using? I've always found the 100% lanolin ones best. Also, go braless as often as you can. I didn't have cracking with the last baby but I did (and still have) very sore boobs and a tendency to mastitis if I wear a bra, even a nursing one. I've been wearing those 'secret support' vests from Marks and Spencers and they make a huge difference. Make sure you are eating lots of avocado and nuts especially brazil nuts. My skin in general is much healthier when I do so it might well help the cracking from the inside. I hope things improve soon, take care.

AnonDubai, that's really painful and I feel for you. I had it all with DS when it comes to breastfeeding - thrush, blisters, cracked nipples, ... Cecile really helped me and I would recommend her wholeheartedly! If you delivered at City, a consultation with the LC is free. I went to see Sameera a few weeks after delivery and was told it was part of the service. The advice about using your own milk to heal is worth trying. It worked for me. All you need is a few drops. Form a C with your thumb and index fingers and squeeze/roll at the outer edges of your areola (not the nipple). When the drops appear, rub on the nipple and let it air dry. I hope this helps you too! Wishing you all the best.

I'd try that but how would I get my own breast milk? I don't have a pump, and you might find this surprising, but I have never squeezed my boob. The thought makes me squeamish! Dear Anon, there are techniques for squeezing the milk manually. I know how to do it but I am not English Mother Tongue so my explanation can not be proper.... so I found some websites where you can find explanations I hope it helps Dont't give up: you know that brestfeeding is the best gift you can give top your newborne!!! http://www.wikihow.com/Hand-Express-Breast-Milk http://www.babycentre.co.uk/x552877/how-can-i-express-breastmilk-by-hand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwZne7NE21M PS as a cream I used 100% pure lanoline - it is safe for the baby and really helpful. Also Calendula based creams help - I agree with advices from Gilly3

Anon I feel your pain, I had the same issue and my LC recommended rinsing after every feed and applying a small amount of nipple cream mixed with either olive oil or breast milk and go bra less when you can. TBH I sent DH to the shop for Avent nipple shields and never looked back, they were a blessing to me. Wishing you the very best and hope it gets less painful soon xx

I always had this issue. I delivered my 3rd child few days back and just got over engorgement, cracked nipples and am now pumping as this is always where it leads me to. So long as the good stuff reaches my baby, am happy with that. What works for me is applying nipple cream (am using medela at the moment, had used palmers as well, both works) every feeding (or in my case, pumping). I do not dry the area, I apply the cream generously so that it will cover the entire area. I just actually had a thought there that if milk has natural healing properties as stated below, the system I do of applying it after every pump makes sense because the remaining milk gets trapped in the area when cream is applied on top of it. You may also express by hand as you won't need much if you are to try the below suggestion by colours.

Hi anondubai, Congratulations on your new arrival.. When I first delivered in city hospital dubai. .The lactation consultant there advised me that most nipple related problems such as dryness, cracked skin etc could be sorted by applying your very own breast milk to the affected areas. Apparently breast milk has some natural healing properties bestowed by nature itself. Could you give it a go and see if it works for you. Sorry i can't vouch for anything as i didn't have any related issues..

Hi Kiwispiers! Thanks for your response. It's definitely not the creams because I started having this problem about a week before I started using the creams. I am going to give it another week. If this continues, I will have no choice but to see a lactation consultant. For now, I don't feel like paying hundreds of dirhams to go see one, but I just might have to. Thanks again for your input!

one other thought, what cream are you using, could you be reacting to it?

I can't help really, I had the sort of cracking you are talking about with both my kids who were both tongue-tied, but it started within a few days post birth. I guess look at the nipple after a feed and see if it looks misshaped, that would be a clue the latch was off (it can look "fine from the outside and still be off). Maybe a thrush infection could get this bad? That is about the only breastfeeding obstacle I didn't experience so I'm not sure. Probably the best solution is to go and see a qualified LC, I hear great things about Dr Delphine. Also are you a member of the facebook breastfeeding support group (Breastfeeding Q&A Dubai UAE) lot's of experienced ladies on there.
