Hi

I am after some advise as my little boy is 3 weeks old and very unsettled and he has colic. I am bottle feeding as breast feeding was not working for us so I express milk and try to give him two or three bottles of expressed milk a day along with formula. We are on the aptamil comfort milk as advised by a midwife with a teat size 3 as the milk is thicker and I also give infacol before each feed but he still seems in so much pain. He hardly sleeps and the longest he will sleep in 2 hours sometimes 2.5 if we are lucky and wants to be fed every 1.5 to 2 hours.... I am so tired and to see him in pain is killing me.

The midwife advised me to cut milk and wheat from my diet but this is hard as normally I have cereal for breakfast/lunch and a slice if toast until my hubby comes home then we have dinner as I don't have the time to eat i am feeding so much and the time I have I can just get a shower and get dressed. I am now thinking to stop the expressed milk as this could be upsetting him. He had a bottle today and spat most of it up.

He seems to wake up crying and won't settle to sleep after a feed, a few he will but mostly he fights it's as of the pain. He is red in the face and looks constipated but he has passed stools, clenches his fits and legs and cries. He also makes strange sucking noises when he is asleep and will cry but still be asleep sometimes.

He has gained weight as all he wants to do is feed and we are back at the clinic tomorrow for a check up but wanted to know if anyone has been through this and can give me sny advise???

I have gripe water but says I can't use this until he is 1 month old. I also give him 30ml of cooled boiled water between feeds to keep him going.

:(

I 100% felt the same as you and agree with Dubaicat- you are doing a great job. I struggled a lot when my DS was first born and colic doesn't help, I promise it gets better xxx

One of the things we mothers are best at is beating ourselves up about not doing a good enough job :). I well remember feeling utterly lost and inadequate well beyond six months, never mind just a month! I know a few words on the screen can't make a difference but I mean it when I say I'm 100% sure you are giving it your best shot and doing it brilliantly. Babies are confusing little beggars at the best of times, let alone when they're fussy and unsettled. I have no idea if it'd be possible to re-establish breastfeeding but if anyone can help you in this respect, it's Dr Delphine at Medicentres Motor City. She's a family GP and a lactation consultant and she's lovely, so she might be worth seeing.

Mrsg1 I am hoping that the poor boy does grow out of it and in the process of changing milk and bottles to see if it helps. I have got a size 2 teat so will try this if I get another comfort milk as I think he is drinking too fast and still needing to suck to settle him. DubaiCat thank you, I don't feel like I am doing a good job and I know the first few weeks are hard but he is nearly a month old. Part of me wishes I had stuck to breast feeding and got help as I feel we would not have these issues now but I can't guarantee that I suppose. Oh well chin hey and let's see what tonigh brings

Has your LO done this right since birth or is it new? Both of mine had a growth spurt at about 2.5-3 weeks and it felt like I was feeding all the time :( but it stopped after a few days. I found Cecile worth her weight in gold with DS but I would definitely combine seeing her with seeing a doctor to rule out any medical issues. Honestly, it does get better. The first few weeks with a newborn are tough enough without any added issues such as these. You're doing a great job!

mrscb my DS who is now 7 months was exactly the same at that age... he grew out of it with a little help of different milk and new bottles... if the doctor says all is well with baby then i promise you it will get better... are you using size 3 teets? try size 2 as thats what i used with the comfort milk maybe the size 3 are just a bit to big.

MrsCB this a public forum and we are not a doctors ( apologiza if sb is a doctor). Our advises might be correct but also might be totally wrong.Really i think if you have any doubts about your baby you should see someone professional. Also recommendations for LC or pediatrician might be not accurate as you think cos all this personal opinions... Wishing all best for you :) edited by evelyn2000 on 06/01/2013

Thank you all for your advise I think I will take him to the doctors as its no better. I have been up since 3am and he has not slept just crying every time I put him down he won't even sleep on me. He just wants feeding all the time but then spending 2 hours to settle him then it's feeding time again. I am at my wits end just nothing I do will settle him. Has anyone been to Cecile??? I am thinking of getting her round to see if she can help. He is on a comfort milk for colic but may need to change it. As its a thick milk I was told to increase the teat size as the others are too small but he gulps a bottle of 100ml down in 5 to 10 mins.

Hello moms :) This is also the same case for my DS. He is now a month old and started to show signs of being colicky baby. Went to pedia and he gave us infacol and change his milk to similac total comfort. Hope things will be fine for all of us as for me, this week become extremely stressful for a first time mom like me...

MrsCB your little one sounds like my DS when he was a few weeks old. I tried all sorts including comfort milk which did work but the biggest thing that helped was the Dr Brown bottles- they changed everything. You can get them from mumzworld.com X

you might want to visit a lactation consultant who can assess for things like tongue-tie, without knowing your history, I'm wondering if whatever made breastfeeding not work for you could also be affecting his bottle-feeding. I would definitely stop the boiled water between feeds, filling up his tummy will make him spit up more and could cause him a lot of pain, not to mention the nutritional risks in replacing formula/breastmilk with water at such a young age. Also the size 3 teat could lead to him over-eating each feed as he will get a lot of milk quickly, and not satisfy his need to suck, giving him a dummy after a bottle could help with this. The fact that your midwife recommended cutting dairy even though she was clearly aware that you would still be formula feeding doesn't give me a lot of faith in her, I'd see someone else if I were you. Keep pumping if you can, if dairy does turn out to be the culprit then formula-feeding isn't an easy option, specialty hydrolysed formulas can be very expensive if not subsidised. The sucking noises and crying while still asleep are normal, don't worry about those.

I found Aptamil Comfort made my baby's colic worse - he improved significantly when we switched to the regular Nan formula (not HA).

there is absolutely no point in cutting dairy from your diet if you are giving formula, formula IS dairy. Its pretty normal for a 3 week old to feed that often and sleep for those periods, but if he seems in pain it could well be reflux or a milk allergy, try not to give too large a quantity in one feed, smaller feeds are easier on the tummy.

Hi MrsCB my dd had colic from 1st wk till she was around 9 weeks and it was heartbreaking hearing her cry. infacol never worked for us. what worked was rocking her to sleep. Max 15 mins in the rocking chair and she settles down and sleeps. On a good day, even 5 mins and she's fine. Sleeping on her dad's tummy works also.

I have read somewhere buy i can't find it again, that there is no clear evidence that medicine for colic's really works. What is more that giving baby medicine, grape water, water etc, formula will make it worst and the best solution is breast milk.If i were on your place i will try to cut down formula and give BM and also wouldn't give baby water. But this is my personal opinion and i think best if you see a doctor. Good Luck for you hopefully everything will settle down soon. Try to search for Tummy Tub i heard it is good for colic's as baby relax in water. edited by evelyn2000 on 03/01/2013

Hi MrsCB Sounds like you are having a tough time with the LO. My daughter had colic as well starting 3 weeks after she was born, but it subsided in a few weeks. At the time i was feeding her formula plus breast milk. The doctor adviced that it was perfectly fine to do so, however the formula was too thick and was not digesting well, so he prescribed a formula called similac total comfort . Which is specially made for babies with colic.Soon after that she was totally normal and less crying and better sleep. Also i used to give her gripe water after when colic started, about a tsp in the evenings when she's cranky. She usually settles after that. But adviced not to make it a habit. There's alot of information online on how to calm colicky babies. I would suggest you discuss with doctor/midwife. They will be able to advice you best. On the bright side colic usually lasts till babies are about 12 weeks or so. In my case the culprit was the formula milk. Soon after i changed that she was back to normal. Maybe you could try that. Hope this helps.
