Hi,

My DD is 6.5 months old and on BM. I would like to introduce formula as she may need fortified iron now.
I tried Aptamil ( ready to drink ) and aptamil Comfort ( powder ).

She hates both. :( cnt get her to drink it at all. Ive introduced rice cereal but she doesnt like that too.

My ques is.

Which brand of formula doesnt smell ? how is hipp formula ( saw them at organic store in Dxb mall )

Should i try any other formula or stick to BM and give her vitamin or iron drops ?

Is it necessary to feed the baby folow on formula after 6 mnths of age ?

Thnx

Im thinking of changing her brand of formula. Should get Infant formula stage 1 or stage 2 , follow on milk ? im confused as i dont know if there is much difference between both. Actually stage 2 is not strictly necessary - it's pretty much a marketing ploy by the manufacturers - so you may choose to give stage 1 until the age of 12 months - it's up to you (and your baby's preference!). Im introducing solids now , and i already think i was late as she doesnt even take half a teaspoon of her rice cereal. She shows all the signs of readiness but when i give her a spoon she plays with it and doesnt want to eat what ever i put in her mouth (cereal and pureed apple ) Lots of babies are not ready by the age of 6 months - this is just an average. A few babies in fact are not ready for solids until twelve months - and they do just fine. Is she able to pick up food and feed herself? If not, then I wouldn't push it - just try again in a week or two. Breast milk (or formula) is the main source of nutrition until the age of one; complementary foods are more for learning than nutrition in the early stages so don't worry at all if she's only taking very small amounts. Keep offering, and she'll take what she needs :). Thank you BFC- Im planning to Breast feed ( EBM ) as long as she wants and as long as i have supply. she feeds around 90-100ml every four hours. Her weight gain is O.K as per the doc. But I know she should start her solids soon too, as she isnt really getting enough. Sometimes when milk supply is less i would like her to take formula so I will try mixing formula and EBM. Will check with her doc. rgd the iron and calcium supplements. If you're worried about supply, do be aware that introducing formula will further decrease your supply. Let me know if you'd like to look at ways of increasing your supply. Calcium intake is rarely an issue in breastfed babies. However, vitamin D can be an issue in this part of the world where we hide from the sun and cover up when we go into the sun - if mum had low vitamin D levels during pregnancy, then baby may be low too - and this can affect calcium absorption. If you're at all worried about calcium as your baby weans, you might want to make sure that she gets sufficient sunlight at safe times of day. (Another thing to bear in mind is that calcium supplements can block the absorption of iron - particularly veg-sourced iron - if consumed close together).

Oh yea, BFC, could you pls advice what iron rich foods can i give my baby ( vegetables and fruits ) If you're a non-veg family, red meat is a good source of iron as it is better absorbed than iron found in plants. Lamb is an often-recommended early food, but beef is also possible. Chicken too contains iron. As you're asking specifically about fruit and veg, lentils are a good source; also beans, potatoes (*with skin*), apricots, figs, peaches.

At 6 months, stage 2 formula is what to give. Babies should have formula or breast milk until 12 months of age. Thereafter, breast milk can continue as long as mum and baby wish but formula should stop as baby should be getting all nutrition from solids. Whole cows milk can be given as a drink to go with solids. Follow on formula beyond no. 2 is not necessary unless a paed prescribes them - just extra, unnecessary calories causing obesity in toddlers - we never had follow on and we are here to tell the tale!

sure thang.. I first started with the ready made ones that I got from the supermarket..remember to check for salt/sugar content...get the ones preferably without.. I started with just a few spoonfuls at lunch, get her to get used to it... So, now it's fixed that she gets solids for lunch and she knows and loves it.. I change like cereal one day, fruits one day, veges one day.. DD is on BM and only gets her formula for bedtime.. reg ur question bout follow up 1 or 2.. don't the bottle say from which age is for which no? Good luck..

Yes, you can do, but if a baby is ready for solids and shows all the signs of readiness, then you can make sure they're cooked well and serve it as finger food. Pros and cons either way - it's up to you.

However, once you introduce solids then iron absorption does go down so you need to make sure to introduce iron-rich foods. xx like what food? DD is already on solids... oh..she's still on BM apart from that bedtime formula.. edited by shjbelle on 11/03/2011

Hi emirates_girl, full-term babies are born with stores of iron that last them into the second half of their first year. If you are happy breastfeeding or giving ebm then don't feel that you need to introduce formula just for the iron. The iron in breastmilk is very well absorbed, and exclusively breastfed babies do not as a rule need extra iron. However, once you introduce solids then iron absorption does go down so you need to make sure to introduce iron-rich foods. If you are doing this, then there is normally no need for iron supplementation although you could always introduce a supplement in an appropriate dose if you or your doctor are worried. xx

hhm.. my dd is just hitting 6 months and i've already started the formula with her... the only time i give her formula is at bedtime... maybe u can mix formula with EBM first then lessen the EBM as she gets used to the taste.. There was another thread about the taste/smell of formula..u can do a search for it.. Maybe, ur DD does not like Aptamil.. I know that it can be a hit and miss with formulas... S
