I'm trying to put together a gift set for a friend who for medical reasons cannot breastfeed and will have to formula feed her DS. Can someone help me withthe essential tools of formula feeding? I just learnt that made formula (likie after mixing the powder and water) cannot be kept longer than an hour (or maybe just the brand I saw). So when you need to take LOs out, what all do you stock? Like a flask for boiled water and stuff? And how does someone carry sterilised bottles? And do you get a special small box to keep the formula powder... because I'm sure people don't carry around the 1 kilo tins in diaper bags!

Sorry, but am really clueless about this.

Has anyone seen this, or something similar at a store? http://www.dubaibabies.com/product/milk-powder-dispenser-bpa-free.aspx Yes, bought something very similar from babyshop, 10dhs. Don't know if it's bpa free, though.

Yes, it does say that Tartiflette, but that's only if "you do not have access to boiling water." Given the small but very serious risk of E.sak (now renamed cronobacter - Frannie, this may be the one you are referring to), mums may prefer to use sterile liquid formula or take a flask of 70C+ water. edited by BFC on 03/04/2011

Hi- Just to point out that the WHO document referenced by Frannie does say: "Alternatively, you can prepare feeds using fresh, safe water at room temperature and consume immediately. Feeds prepared with water cooler than 70ºC should not be stored for use later." So if she is out she can indeed make up formula "on the go" (with powder and safe water) as long as it is for immediate consumption. I got my DD used to sometimes having room temperature formula in case I was ever in a place without access to warming equipment.

What a nice thing to do for your friend :) The most important thing you could give her is a copy of http://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/micro/PIF_Bottle_en.pdf - the World Health Organisation Guidelines on making up formula. It's really really important that formula is made with hot water to kill the bacteria in it (the most dangerous of those than can be present in formula are Salmonella and one I can't remember how to spell!!). Many packs of formula do not make this 100% clear and a lot of people make it with cool water. I bang on about this a lot. Sorry!

Thank you ladies! Got the TT bottles, warmer and a flask... but can't find the formula carriers? Do you have a brand name or any other specifics? Babyshop in MCC had different kinds available.

mothercare usually has the formula carriers or even spinneys. I believe they are Avent. Blue container with three slots.

Steralise the bottles normally 6 at a time, read the formula instructions for water amount for the baby's age. Fill the 6 bottles with required amount of low salt boiled water such as ARWA. Place steralised teats and tops on and store them in the fridge for up to 24hrs, then use as required heating to room temperature either in the microwave or bottle warmer etc. For trips out warm bottle to very hot and you can get from Tommee Tippee little individual formula containers that you steralise and place IN the bottle with the steralised water and simply take it out and pour it in. Keep hot by buying bottle bags or most nappy bags have a compartment for this. Also buy bottle brush and steralising tablets.

I have a friend who had a really nifty thermos thing that you'd put a sterile bottle of boiling water in and it'd keep it hot. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-Nature-Travel/dp/B002L3TEN8/ref=pd_cp_kh_1 That and a great bag to carry all the stuff in.
