Home birth in Dubai?

So, 2 weeks before I am due to give birth at City Hospital, our insurance company has announced that they no longer cover births at City. To say I am devastated is an understatement. My husband and I are flat broke and just don't have the money to pay for it ourselves. I also cannot fly as I am too far gone.

So, I am wondering if I can have a home birth? And if anybody knows of any qualified midwives able to assist a home birth?

Thanks.

I think that it is very selfish to involve others in this, your husband and a doula.......if anything were to go wrong, then those assisting can be implicated. You clearly do not understand the law on this and how serious it could be.

Sorry, just wanted to pop on here and let you know that home birth isn't illegal as a couple of posters said. I had a home birth and was able to get the birth cert just fine. I know a few other women who had a homebirth and didn't have trouble getting birth cert either. So, it is a possibility if that's what you want. Midwives aren't able to assist the birth, however, as their license restricts them to their clinic or hospital. So the birth would have to be unassisted. I hope you are able to figure out what will work for you. Hugs. x Hi sweetlily, I am planning a homebirth here too. Could you please tell me more about getting the birth certificate (how to?), and how did you made your pregnancy check ups? Thanks. Hugs

That would be so great Redrec Tangle :) I already received a cot, stroller, high chair, walker, b-pump, few blankets and few clothes till 3-6 months old... If you have spare car seat, sterilizer, bouncy chair, cot beddings, changing table to put on top of the cot and few clothes 6m+ and fews toys / nursery decor that would be helpful... Or anything that you can give will definitely help us... My email ad is hassli1980 at Gmail.com Thanks a lot. I wish the best for the OP.

hey there, hubby is a lawyer Nd he's suggesting you raise the matter with the Dubai health ministry.they deal with regulating health insurance affairs. Secondly have you read your insurance contract laws..is the insurance company allowed to change things prior notice?we can offer reading it for u and see if there is something u can make use of..if u want I can post my email id.you can email the contract n hubby will look thru it.

Sorry that this has happened to you at this stage of your pregnancy - not an added stress that was needed! I delivered at Latifa in June last year (also a high risk pregancy) and highly recommend them. However, you do have to register with them before 29 weeks (but I doubt they would turn away someone as far as long as you though and in need). It will cost you at least dhs 12,000 (dhs5,000 antenatal - we were told that everyone has to pay this - and dhs7,000 for natural). Your husband will not be allowed in the labour suite but will be in the delivery room (but you are able to go out and see him until it all becomes too much or you have epidural of course!). So ,in your case, I think you need to bite the bullet and go to Iranian. Do you have any close friends that you would like to be there with you and will support you? I had a good friend with me in the labour suite and she was a life saver (poor thing, however, did not expect to be that person and unfortunately for her, turned up just as it all got too much!) But she was brilliant and I did need her there. I used to work as cabin crew and I strongly agree that you do not fly. Apart from getting a letter from your OBGYN for clearance, you also need to get clearance from the medical department of the airline (which being high risk and very late, I doubt you would get). The aircraft is not a clean environment to delivery a baby and since your pregnancy is high risk, you do not want medically untrained cabin crew delivering your baby (yes they are trained in delivering but not indepth) and if something goes wrong, it takes time to divert and get to a hospital. Personally, I would not put myself or my baby at risk. I had a high risk pregnancy as well and was unable to fly home so had to change our plans, at 29 weeks, to have our DD here (and we didn't have insurance as I was insured through work and when I declared the pregnancy, it ceased) . I hope you manage to sort it all out soon. Go down to Iranian tomorrow and find out more info and talk to the drs and have a look at the maternity ward. Good luck and hopefully you will be holding your precious bubs very soon

Hi Layla, Hope you manage to sort your problem soon. Same here, we too have some financial issues and I am 25weeks now. We manage to make a loan to pay for maternity insurance as we don't have a cover. Now we are focusing to pay the loan till dec/jan of next year. We are sad that we cannot allocate budget to buy basic baby's stuff.. It bothers me a lot So I posted an add hoping some kind family will be happily to give away baby items .. And God is good as I almost complete all the basic necessities of my baby just few items left. Maybe you can do the same, after delivery you need to have baby stuff too.. Or hope you have everything then. Also, is it possible that you can go to other hospital though it is far but cheaper (al zulekha-sharjah, al Baraha hospital, ect) and reimburse your expenses against the available 7500aed? I have inquire before in al Baraha.. It is 4500 free check up and most of the test...you just need a health card worth 200/300. A friend of mine delivered there and it was ok.. But if you can manage go to latifa as they have a very good reputation specially high risk pregnancies.. If no choice, have Iranian hospital. Another flat mate of mine deliver there and it was also a fine experience. If really things didn't work out for us, I have no other choice but to ask from our families. Goodluck to you.

Well if this is ur first pregnancy, high risk to add and you have financial problems...u are just doing what I would be doing.first time around every one is lost or atleast I was lost. All you need to do is gi to latifa hospital and Iranian hospital.i have a bunch of friends who delivered there for there first babies..either they didn't have cover or the cash ...but every one has good things to say about latifa.iranian no experience:-( Secondly ur husband can always take a loan from his office...maybe a months pay in advance...I didn't hve cover for my pregnancy n we were not broke but certainly didn't have cash either, I ended up having a c-section costing a whopping 30k ..still paying off the loan but Thank God ....it passed and so does everything.trust me ,God has plans so just pray and do some real research.

Ok, I'm new to Dubai, but is there something wrong with the Iranian hospital? I'm sure they deliver perfectly healthy babies all of the time, and that they've got the staff on hand to deal with anything that could go wrong, which is rare. I also agree that you should drive over and register with them and not worry so much about your childbirth. My god, the hospital in England where I gave birth to my son was a hovel, truly, but we all survived and came out the other end and have some hilarious stories from the experience. Focus on your baby and the joy to come, and try not to worry too much. I had two high risk pregnancies, and it all worked out in the end. If your childbirth isn't going to be straightforward, the hospital won't matter that much, it's the epidural you'll be after. Also, if your DH can't be there in the room, do you have any women friends who can be there with you to hold your hand and steer you through?

If the OP has a high-risk pregnancy, as she insinuated in her post to shaks earlier, then I can't see any doctor on the planet passing her as fit to fly (I don't know if low-risk pregnancies are cleared to fly at 38 weeks are they?) Also, I think anyone classed as high risk would be very foolish indeed to consider giving birth anywhere except hospital. OP, do you have family who could lend you money to cover costs if need be?

I have no idea. DD had a c section under epidural as she was one week late and no sign of labour.

That's encouraging Shaks, thanks. Do you know if they have any experience of dealing with high-risk pregnancies?

DD gave birth in the Iranian hospital 7 years ago and it was fine. She took a private room so I could stay with her. She had a c section and I could not fault them. The room was clean, loved their kebabs, and the medical care for both mother and baby was excellent.

OK, so I have just spent about 15 mins on the phone to them, but unfortunately no-one I spoke to spoke enough English for me to be understood. They kept transferring me to different departments and when I asked how to book in, they just kept giving me directions. I gave up in the end. I am going to see if I can get a letter from my previous obstetrician to fly home.

Because apparently fathers are not allowed in the Delivery Suite and my husband desperately wants to be there when it's born. If that's only what you have heard, then maybe it is best to make an appointment with an OB-GYN there and ask her yourself. I'd be surprised if fathers were not allowed in the delivery room.

its not as bad as having to pay large fees if things go wrong and you have gone private. Actually, that's another point... our limit is AED 7.5, so if something goes wrong and it exceeds this amount, then we are in trouble.

Birth here is not the time to have no hospital cover, or be strapped for cash. We do have cover, but they changed their hospitals a week ago! Also, I have been very ill and had to give up work in February. Both situations came out of the blue, we certainly didn't plan them.

So sorry to hear. Rashidya is the big govt hospital which provides excellent care but sure about maternity. I meant to suggest that you also post this in the "pregnancy and babies" boards of the Forum where you may get a professional opinion from a midwife who can help. There are EW who dont check this main board and mostly only check those boards. xx
