I'd like to get your opinions and experience when it comes to getting baby to sleep. My boy is just coming up to six weeks and HATES being put to bed. He also has colic which is aggrevating the situation, but typically we'll start the bedtime routine around 6-7pm and he is not asleep before 9-10pm. He just screams his head off when I put him down, and putting hands on without picking him up seems to make him even angrier. So I pick him up, give him a cuddle, put him down and it all starts over again.

Now my husband has been away for a few days and I have let baby sleep on me / with me in the bed and he sleeps so much easier and longer. Is this a terrible habit that is going to create an even worse problem? What would you do?

My boy is 4 month old and for 2 months he slept on me or with me all cuddled in my arms...elevated head made it easy for him to sleep as he had very sad colic....gripewater and sleeping on my chest helped him sleep well...colic is worst between 10pm to 4am as per paed.... 3rd month onwards we moved him in to grobag(sleeping bag) and in to his crib...now he is addicted to his grobag and sleeps so peacefully.

Cosleeping is great but as your baby is very young you have to be extra careful with the safety aspects. Another thing you could do is get a bassinet, light weight, there are even some with mesh "walls" that you can place on your bed between you and your husband, bit of a combination approach. Mine did not sleep during the day, almost not a all (baring a couple of 10 min naps now and then) until she was 3 months old. It was quite challenging. And up until she was 2 months old she was waking up a lot during the night and taking hours to go back to sleep. Every baby is different but in the end my conclusion was that she was much calmer and likely to sleep when she was close to me. From 6 months she's been sleeping on a mattress on the floor in her own room (considered a Montessori method but it's in fact common in many cultures) and usually sleeps through the night. When she is upset or sick I sleep next to her (it's a twin adult mattress). I could not manage with the crib and the endless picking up, putting down and trying to comfort her while bending over for more than 10 mins and I think she hated it to. Anyway, that's food for thought for later on. Be patient and keep trying different things, most of the times things change not because of something you did but because the baby has gone through a phase/developmental milestone:-)

My 11 week old sleeps with me and my husband and sleeps like an angel! If i ever do try to move her to the cot she wakes up. I had trouble getting her to sleep in the first few weeks so i used to lie her on her side and me on mine and let her feed herself to sleep (breastfeed). She doesn't need to do that anymore, she enjoys that the 3 of us go to bed together, turn off the lights, play for a little while and she smiles and giggles, then goes off to sleep when she's ready but she doesn't cry. I never swaddled my baby because she is a human in the end and needs to move or change position if she's not comfortable. My in laws told me if i didnt swaddle her she'd be a nightmare but now they've all sworn off swaddling after seeing how happy my baby is to move til her heart's content and make herself comfortable, not being forced into a cramped position and kept there for hours. And people who say swaddling makes them feel they're still in the womb, they're not in the womb! They were in there for long enough and they sooner they get used to life outside the better! I once let my MIL attempt to swaddle my baby and she screamed blue murder like someone was torturing her.

Are you swaddling, that really helps some babies. Also is your baby getting enough daytime sleep, try to limit awake time to about 90 min between naps.

I let all 3 of mine sleep with me when young. I would let them fall asleep on the breast too. Books say its safe enough to let them sleep with you as long as you aren't under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Babies go through growth spurts too and need to feed more often every few weeks from newborn which is why he may be more needy. Get help maybe maybe a neighbours maid or agency to do the washing etc or you wont relax and your breast milk wont come when he needs nursing. I also used a sling to prepare dinners etc at times when they were clingy. Slip him into his cradle when he falls asleep on the breast and leave a scent of you beside him like a breast pad or tshirt so he is comforted. I always believe young babies cry for a reason, Nappy change, Wind or hungry. Enjoy the moments.

Go and get yourself a copy of the no cry sleep solution, it will tell you how to gently ease your baby into falling asleep without you without sleep training/ withholding comfort. Aside from that a few points; Cosleeping is a lovely thing, just make sure you have a safe cosleeping set up. Your baby may settle to sleep alone if they are allowed to sleep on their tummy, this is not recomended due to increased SIDS risk so it's a judgement call, much like the cosleeping. 6 weeks tends to be a really unsettled time for babies, colic/ reflux/ crying peaks around now so hang in there. Are you using a dummy? If breastfeeding is going well and you feel ok about using one it can be an excellent sleep cue and in the long run is easier than having to rock/ feed a baby to sleep . Have you tried white noise, it needs to be LOUD, try running the vacuum cleaner or hair dryer right next to your baby's bed. I'm not joking, it seriously works! Good luck!

andreag I could have written that myself. I suggest you get a sling, that way you can do other things. I didn't use the sling, I just let him sleep on me most of the time. We worked around it. He ocassionaly slept in his moses basket, and I carted that around with me and did the housework.

I' sure some of the other ladies can help you with some better advice than what I've got because I have no idea how to get such a young baby to sleep on their own. But have you thought about getting a baby carrier or a baby sling? that way he gets his comfort and you can do things such as eating, laundry, not showering obviously!! sorry I cant be more helpful with getting him to sleep on his own. It was on and off with my girls when they were so young, sometimes they'd nap on their own and sometimes not.

Thanks for your responses. I write this with baby sleeping on my chest, which is lovely but also a bit limiting. The laundry isn't going to do itself.I guess my main problem with it is that if he needs to sleep on me, I will get absolutely no time at all to get anything done, including eating and showering.. It is also lovely and cuddly now when he is 4 kg, but he is putting on weight quickly. Does anybody have any advice for how to make him nap on his own? I am all for giving him what he needs, but I also need a little bit of time for me.

It makes baby feel secure and as you notice he is sleeping better with you.My LO is 8 months and we are sleeping together from the day we back from hospital. I have never tried any sleep training, he is falling asleep on breast but happens few times he slept by himself. Just make sure your bed is safe ( not too much pillows and heavy blankets), make sure you LO will not fall down. And you can always get another bed for your husband and just put it beside yours. You will not spoil your baby, they are small for such short time. Enjoy it :), that is a beautiful part of motherhood feeling your baby sleeping on you.

My son up until he was 4/5 mths old slept on me all night. The husband and I slept in seperate rooms up until Harry was 5 mths old. I don't care if it isn't recommended, it worked for us and I'm glad I did it. Even now, when we go back to the UK for a hol, Harry is awake at 4am, he'll have some milk and then go back to sleep on me on the sofa for a few hours. (He's 15 mths old now).

Oh, the little darling. He wants his mummy. Personally, I think at 6 weeks he's still too young to be left to cry it out or to get him into a routine. Others may disagree with me. For me, I did have my girls in their own cots from birth, but if they wanted cuddles they'd get cuddled. I started them on a routine at 3 months, and honestly it was so easy to implement, you just have to be tough and not give up. It doesn't take long anyway. IMHO I would keep giving him what he needs, he's still so attached to you.
