Hi ladies,

I just wanted your experiences with cervical sweeps please. Did you find they worked(or didn't?) If so how long after you had it done did you go into labour? And did you bleed afterwards, if so how much?

I had my sweep done yesterday and in all honesty I did not find that it hurt that much, just felt tugging below. I was still able to talk to the OBGYN as she did it. She did warn me that I should expect bleeding afterwards. Yesterday there was a little bit of brown on the tissue, but nothing actually came out.

Now this morning when I woke up, there was a bloob of blood on my underwear. I thought it may have been the plug. The more I cleaned, the more jelly like stuff was coming out along with blood, at times the blood was red, or brown.

I'm sorry ladies I know this really sounds gross and I feel bad having to share this on a public forum, but I just need your views please. Should I go to the hospital ( I'm not having regular contractions at all, just slight period like pains and aches, my back is tingling a little if that makes sense?) Baby is moving as normal.

If you have had a sweep done before, did you experience this?
BTW I'm 38 weeks today.

HELP PLEASE!
Thanks in advance.

I had a sweep at 11am and the contractions started at 12pm. I had a show after the sweep and when i got to the hospital at 3pm was 6cm dilated. Think it will push things along if nature had intended it to happen if not ready will have to let nature takes its course. My waters breaking was a tidal wave and i was quite shocked at just how much liquid there was as i had been told to expect a gentle wave. If you think it was your waters then i would get checked out. Best of luck.

I had 2 sweeps - one at 40 weeks, one at 40 + 2, there was no effect and whilst it was uncomfortable, I didn't find it very painful, it was also very quick. There was a little spotting afterwards but nothing of any significance. These were with 2 different doctors. I have since realised that these were indeed quite tame, as just prior to being induced I was given a "sweep" by another doctor - where she helped me from 1.5cm to 3cm dilated within a few seconds. Quite eye watering to say the least!!!!

I had a sweep with my first pregnancy which I found intensely painful and in the end, entirely unheipful! I 'had a show' and then went into labour within a day with both of mine. Sounds like your baby might be here soon! Very best of luck. :)

sounds like things are on the move moonbean. I had a sweep at 38 weeks exactly and had the same discharge you are talking about come out later... it then came out a lot - so much I thought it was my waters breaking but found out when getting to the hospital it was my 'show'... 5 hrs later DS was out. Wishing you all the very best for the birth of your baby. xox

Thank you very much ladies, I feel a little better now. The bleeding seems to be slowing down, I have a panty liner on just to monitor it and make sure its not too heavy. Still waiting for that magical contraction though!!! Hello.Again.Kitty I'm the one who asked for it. To be honest my OBGYN was all for waiting until next week when I have hit 39 weeks. The reason why I asked for it is because I'm struggling with really bad pelvis pain(spd) It started from about 29 weeks, some days are better then others. At night I can not turn over in bed, its has to happen in stages, I can not put any pressure on my hips, there have been times when I need to go to the toilet and I can not even stand up, I kinda have to crawl or get DH to help me. And to make matters worse I've developed pregnancy carpal tunnel. It really affects me and at times struggle to make a fist with my hands or hold a heavy object like a book. Yesterday driving was a little difficult as I could not wrap my hands on the steering wheel properly-not very safe me thinks! I never had any of this with my first pregnancy so this is all one huge shock to me. All of this is really preventing me from doing normal things with my son like I used to and in all honesty I feel slightly miserable. Hence requesting the sweep. oh, I completely understand on the pelvic pain front! In the end, I had to take up all the double bed just to roll over because it was impossible for me to lift my pelvis at all. One thing to watch though is when bubs is born and if you're changing a nappy or playing on the floor, remember that it will still hurt (er, kill!) to get up one leg at a time with no support... did that once and collapsed back on the floor!

Sounds like the plug came out. It can still be a couple more days till the actual labour starts. No need to go to the hospital just yet. Wait till contractions get more regular. I had a sweep done on my due date, but nothing happened afterwards. I was induced 2 days later and the plug came out 12 hours after the started inducing me. Water broke another 6 hours later... edited by happymommy on 09/05/2011

I had 2 with DS - neither hurt at all and I didn't have any bleeding either. First one didn't work, but the second did - I was in labour about an hour after the mw did it. I think they tend to shimmy things along if you're on the brink, so to speak May I ask though - simply out of curiosity (and not anything to do with you) - why your OB/Gyn decided to do a sweep at 37/38 weeks? It just seems very, very early, because it's only on the cusp of "at term". Usually, in the UK (which is my benchmark for how to do things properly) they will only do a sweep at 40 weeks, as it is the first level of induction.

I had it done with both of mine and the after effects were they same as you are describing. Some of my friends it worked and they went into labour quite quickly. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything for me and I had to be induced 10 days past my due date with both of them! Hopefully you'll have better luck! :)
