Dear ladies

It took me a while to post this but i felt i should share my experience with you.

I had my first baby with dr janaki at welcare hospital and everything went very smooth. For my second one i decided to go with city hospital. I was with dr britt but she had to leave so i got transferred to Dr. Debb. I was meant to be induced on 2 july 2013 and was asked to come at midnight for the purpose of insurance etc by the doctor. I dint really want that date but had no choice. Anyhow on 1 st night i started getting small contractions so went to the hospital around 1 am( 2nd morning). The mid wife checked me and asked me to stay for the night. At 9am on 2nd morning the doctor came to check me and i was 1cm dilated. Now the doctor is well aware how sensitive i am to pain and you can say my threshold to pain is zero. If anyone pinches me i get a bruise and to date i am scared of blood test. For the 1st one also i had natural delivery and when i was only 2 cm dilated i asked for epidural. I guess this gives you an idea how i am towards pain.

Doctor asked me to go back and come back at night. I reached home at 11am and was having small contractions. Around 130 pm contrcations were getting strong so i called the doctor who advised me to take 2 panadol and sit in the bath tub. She was still talking about insurance and asked me to come in if it gets really bad. At 2 pm i did as i was advised and after 15 minutes the contactions became extremely bad. Luckily my nanny was with me who called DH and he drove quite fast. By the time DH came home i was in a bad state and hanging on to the railing in my bathroom. he could see mucus coming out which was the size of a tennis ball. He put me in bed and called emergency.
The emergency team was quite fast and came in 10 minuted luckily. I have to admit rashid hospital is brilliant as they came very fast. They also have maternity ward and nurses were in 15 minutes after.

We live in a villa and everyone was scared to take me in stretcher through our staircase in the event contraction comes as i was pushing quite hard. The nurses at that point felt that there was no time and baby had to be delivered home. They saw a contraction coming and water broke and in one push the baby came out. It all happened very fast as by 330 pm i had delivered.Thereafter i was taken to city hospital. The stress we all went through is unimaginable. I am just grateful that the emergency team was quick enough to come. The funny bit to the story is that i kept asking for epidural and kept getting assured its coming and to make me feel better they gave me sugar injection so that i think its some sort of a pain killer :-).

Upon reaching the hospital the midwife checked me and said there was a very slight tear and only one or two stiches were required. The doc came to check me and gave me lots of stiches.
Apart from the delivery trauma then came the service bit.

It was my first experience with city and i was extremely hungry as had not eaten all day and requested for a club sandwitch, however it never came and 2 hours after dinner came and when i asked for the sandwitch i got told it will be charged. At that point of time i was losing it and really dint care about getting charged as all i wanted was to eat club sandwitch. Anyhow it never arrived. I stayed in the hospital for two nights and it was just not a pleasant experience. Maybe the timing was bad as they were short of staff and it would take 30 mins everytime for a nurse to come whenever i needed them.

Then came the bill. DH luckily checked the bill and saw that city actually charged us for delivery which never took place there. DH was already annoyed as not only was my life and baby life put to risk but now we were also being charged. This was ofcourse removed by the end.

Overall my experience with city was very sour.

Now i understand that in europe and uk it is common to send one back home and ask to come back to hospital when one is 7cm dilated. I may be wrong so dont quote me please. However, when i am due to be induced the same day then why even send me back and it all had to be worked as per doctors schedule and agenda. Also, knowing that i cant manage pain yet i was asked to go back.
Many otherthings happened at city which i was not pleased about.

Anyhow i never thought i could get through this but i guess our bodies are meant to take any kind of pain and i never thought i could survive this without an epidural. Its a story i will remember always and felt i should share with everone, tried to make it as short as possible :-)

KenzaB it really sounds like you had a rough time. I hope you are feeling better, baby is well and hope your husband manages to sort City out regarding the ripping off of the insurance. I am also experiencing City trying to rip off my insurance company. I am due to give birth December/January and City try to get me to go for "check ups" and scans every 2 - 4 weeks which I think is ridiculous..they conduct a urine test every time too which I know fills their financial quota with the laboratory $$$. My pregnancy has been seamless so far and every test has come back normal so where is the requirement to conduct scans every few weeks? I have now refused to go back for a check up until after 28 weeks as I feel that its all a money making scheme and all the tests are completely unnecessary. They charge aprox AED700 per visit to my insurance company for the sake of 2 minutes having a scan (looking at nothing in particular) and a wee in a cup. I had 2 babies on the NHS, and it was routine to get urine analysed at every visit, which was every 4 weeks until the last month, then every 2 weeks. No scans at every check in the UK but as the doctors have scanning equipment in their rooms here, it's easy to do this and I wasn't charged extra for these 'check-up scans' at City, just the normal consultation fee. Personally, I think less than GBP150 per visit to see the same consultant at each routine appointment and get a peek at baby, listen to heartbeat and measure growth is very inexpensive. Hi KH, thanks for this info..you have reassured me...I was really worried it was just a way to take advantage of the insurance. I will be a lot more relaxed next time I go so thanks :-)

Ladies, Thanks for taking the time to post your experiences. We are due to have DD2 at City anytime now and have appreciated the heads up on issues that you have all experienced recently - it is a far different experience to what we had 20 months ago so will keep our eyes and ears peeled. Will also endeavour to post our experience once back home to let you know if things have improved or not. Wish you all the best perkynan and hope things go smooth for you. Hugs Just reread the full post and realized you have already delivered :-) hearty congratulations and glad all went well with you. Take care edited by sherryd on 19/09/2013

Hi ladies So we got home yesterday from City where DD2 arrived safe and sound at the beginning of the week and as promised am sharing my experience. Delivery ward - amazing team, just as I remember them from DD1s arrival two years back. Can't fault them, we felt very well looked after, support was great and a lovely bunch of people to help you thru a great experience. Maternity ward - lovely team, only downside is that as you are there for a couple of days you get at least four different shifts so there is a bit of inconsistency in advice, but definitely consistent in their caring ways. Would say to first time mums don't be afraid to ask lots of questions as the team weren't very forthcoming about how things worked on the ward etc. not sure if that was just because it was our second time there so they figured we knew already. The nurses who look after the babies for baths etc are a great source of knowledge for the little questions on newborns so when you are with them for bath time ask ask ask. The wards were busy. Lots of September babies. But whenever we buzzed we didn't really wait for someone to pop in to check what we needed. This time around admissions and discharge were much easier and quicker. I think because we were discharging during office hours meant that they had the right people on board to process us quickly. We also were not rushed to leave - offered to do the paperwork during the day and leave in the evening if we wanted to have support for another feed. We made the mistake of waiting for the LC to do a feed because the nurses told us she was coming. We should have asked the nurses to help us crack on as we ended up waiting quite a while as there is only one LC for the ward and she can only stretch so far. We got sorted in the end and asked the nurses the next time. Bubs had all her vaccinations, heel prick etc done at her bath times to minimise the disruption to her. The heel prick can't be done until at least 36 hours after birth. On balance we had a great experience again. As other ladies have mentioned there is room for improvement in the post delivery maternity ward (and there was last time too) but we didn't see a drop in standard this time, just not an improvement. Anyways, just another experience to share.

Hi Kelly1814, Looks like you got a good deal!..I think they just like to take advantage when it is an insurance company covering all costs with no limit..this is just the impression I got from the constant chasing to go to check ups when I'm absolutely fine. Would be great to hear about your experience next week...I'm sure it will be positive :-) Best of luck..do you know what you are having? :-) i have to say i am surprised by what good value the pregnancy packages are there! thanks for the kind words, am vvvv nervous as they're delivering me 3 weeks early early due to medical reasons and the babe is a tiddler....but i really do feel in good hands there. we're keeping it a surprise although of course the world and his wife all have an opinion on what it is :)

watching with interest - i'm at city with a high risk pregnancy and cannot rate them enough. i like that it is consultant led care, i like the regular scans and checking. i bought a package which i thought was great value - 5k AED for 11 appts/scans, lots of tests included. I didn't feel it was a rip off. when have had problems they have whisked me in and sorted everything calmly and professionally. giving birth there next week (eek) so will report back with experiences.

That is just horrible, KenzaB! I would be really angry too! City Hospital is getting a lot of negative feedback on this forum nowadays. It seems like they've become too big for their britches!

Having mixed feelings about City Hospital as well. The doctors and midwives are good, so are most of the nurses on the maternity ward. But .... to be discharged 1 day early because they need extra beds? How is that MY problem? I gave birth on the 2nd (very traumatic delivery) and on the 3rd they asked me to vacate the room by 1pm . I was to exhausted to realise what happened so I packed and went. They didnt weigh my baby on discharge so I had no clue as to what her weight was and if she was thriving on my milk or not. They did charge the insurance for 2 days. My husband is taking it up with them as I dont feel like we need to help City Hospital rip off our insurance company for services we never received. Then, we had to come back the next day to do the heel prick, which should have been done at the hospital in the first place. Very inconvenient trip with a newborn and a toddler and a mummy who could barely walk. Not impressed with management to be honest. I was expecting much much better from them.

OP the post-labour ward at City was dreadful in my experience. Pre-labour the nurses were lovely and so attentive but once I'd had my baby and was moved to the next floor, the nurses were rushing around, I had to beg for wet dressings to be changed for 2 hours, and it took hours to prepare the final bill, again with loads of insurance drama. I am therefore having my next baby at Al Zahra where it is a haven of calm and everything is spotless and in order. DB I have heard some good reviews on Al Zahra. Wish you all the very best.

My father had a heart procedure in City hospital.. and ever since the change in management recently, their service has become so poor! When he was being taken for the procedure.. there was so much confusion and the papers/reports were not in the file.. for a moment i felt that they were taking the wrong patient because the doctor kept questioning that what is the diagnosis!.. i refused to let my father go into the OT and told them to show me all the documents to ensure it was complete! Well it was Not! So i told them that they need to get all his recent reports attached before he goes in so that the doctor knows what was his last month's history! Even the surgeon (who was the only one acting professional) was annoyed and i was soooo tensed at the last moment and afraid that these guys would just operate him for something else and create more trouble! Oh and yes City Hospital is obsessed with Insurance.. they took more than 15 hours to get the approval and paper work completed.. we waited from morning 8 am until evening 7 pm!!!! Similar pathetic experience with my mother's MRI.. after waiting for a month they gave her an MRI Appointment and then when she went to see the doctor 2 weeks post-MRI, all he said was she is fine,... take her to the ENT and oh the ENT is full so wait another 2 weeks! I eventually took her to Garhoud Private Hospital and she got treated within 2 days!!

so glad to hear there were no complications and that the ambulance arrived just in time. i'm sorry about your experience with city hospital. it could be just on the time or chance that they were slow, i had both my deliveries there and the nursing staff was always at my beck and call.

Just out of curiosity, how much did they charge you for the ambulance and the nurses from Rachid Hospital? And also, what was the number your husband called, might come in handy to have that information. Thanks, You will be surprised. The ambulance services are free and because we went to private hospital they charged us around 300 dhs otherwise they would drop you of to rashid hospital for free. The emergency number is 999. Note that based on what i understand you cannot just deliver your baby at home thinking you will save charges as the ambulance will automatically bring you to a hospital for follow up and the charges start from the moment you reach the hospital.

Dear OP, I am very sorry that you had to go through this. On the other hand I am very happy to hear you had a very "quick" birth in the comfort of your own home and both you and your baby are safe and sound. It sounds to me that your doctor is very concerned about insurance, why is that? Have you mentioned to her that you were afraid that insurance wont cover you? Also, why did you have to be induced at a specific date you didnt even like? This sounds very confusing to me as I dont see a connection with your insurance to be honest. I think you are very lucky that your husband stayed so calm and had the perfect sense of putting you in bed in stead of rushing you to the hospital in the car. About the sandwich, I can really imagine how hungry you must have been by then but wasn't there any option for your husband to run down to the cafeteria and get you something to speed up the process. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story and wish you all the best. Dear Kenzab Thank you for your concern. In regards to your question on insurance i was covered but the doctor felt that if i come after midnight then i will not be charged for the extra night basically and the following morning i will get induced. The insurance covered 10k but for me it was not a concern at all as i had taken package as well with city and anything extra we would have paid. I was due on 13 july and had gestational diabeties. However it was not that bad but the doctor felt i should be induced before in order to avoid any complications, henceforth she told me i need to get induced latest by 3rd july as after it was the weekend and she was not available. For me the later the better as i was working and so set the date. never wanted it this way as preferd to let it happen naturally whenever the baby was ready but when i was told that i can put dd life at risk, i agreed to get induced earlier. For my first baby i had the same issue but i was not asked to come in earlier to get induced. The water broke and when the baby was ready it happened. In regards to sandwitch, i was told by the nurse that it would arrive soon and once i had changed and was resting in room my husband left me to go home to get things as there was no time earlier with all the chaos taking place at hone. Had we known it would never arrive he would have surely gone even out of the hospital to get me one :-) Take care and thanks for checking on me
