Hi there,

just wanted to ask at what age should be the pacifier introduced to a new born? Should I put one in the hospital bag, or should I wait until the baby gets older?

I didn't give my LO a pacifier until she was nearly 12 weeks old and she was fine with it. Saying that I've always had them close by and never wanted to use it but I came back to Dubai on my own and caved in!

agree with HAK...... again ;) I personally would have rather not given my LO a dummy, I hate the look of them and have spent the last year trying to avoid him ever being photographed with one in his mouth. I feel guilty all the time that I am ruining his palate. Despite having "NO DUMMIES" in bold in my birth plan, I cracked and gave him one at 4 days old, he was a very very sucky baby and it made him happy :) (and gave my poor shredded nipples a break) Will try not to give one to the next baby though, I have no idea how I am going to convince my wee guy he can sleep without it.

there's actually no reason to assume that your baby will need a pacifier at all... some do, some don't.

As greenish said, if BF, do your best not to give one in the first few weeks, and by all accounts do give one no later than 6-10 weeks if you want it to be accepted, same goes for bottles. If you are having any problems with breastfeeding/weight gain/supply though, hold off on both. If you choose not to breastfeed, no reason not to give it from day one so long as baby is gaining weight well (if not they need to save their sucking strength for the bottle/boob)

If you are planning on breastfeeding, current recommendations are to avoid pacifiers/bottles etc (if at all possible) until breastfeeding is well established. This is usually for at least 6 weeks. Don't spend a fortune on cute pacifiers. I have bought a few in my time after desperate sleepless nights and all three of my children rejected them. ;)
