Pretty in pink: Have done some research on this recently as I discovered my health insurance did not cover maternity after I fell pregnant. Daman Insurance will make you wait six months and City Hospital and American Hospital are covered on their Regional Plan. Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company gives you maternity cover at CH and AH for about AED3000 but I am not sure if there is a waiting period or not. In my case, as I am already pregnant, the cost of maternity cover is AED15,000 for women under 30 years of age and AED19,000 for those over 30. This covers the delivery, antenatal appointments and your baby is automatically covered too. When you consider the cost of going public or private without the insurance, it can sometimes add up to this amount anyway. I tried other insurance companies as well and found them to either not provide immediate maternity cover or only offer insurance to employers and not employees. Good luck : )

My experience - Allianz covered everything from day one - no 12 month waiting period. My new card reads Neoron though so not sure if they've changed their name - should check. American Hospital - was brill. Oh and if you want to consider their 'package' you wont need insurence, just buy the package. I've heard good things about city though, but never been so can't comment. This is excellent info!! thanks so much!!!! IF you dont mind- what is the yearly premium you pay for this?

Hi Ladies - thanks for your varied experiences/advice. I admit, I'm not totally taken with the government hospital route, but all of the insurance policies I have looked at have a waiting period of 10-12 months prior to conception, not even delivery. It feels like paying for the insurance for a year before it will even kick in for the cover I want. Gogi78 you mentioned a 6 month waiting period - do you know which insurance companies have such an option as I would be interested to find out more? Thanks again. xxx

Hi hun, I had an emergency CS at Al Wasel & DH was with me in the OR. But he wasnt allowed to come in when I was in the ward earlier. The prices at AL Wasel really increased recently, as it's a government hospital, they have lots of procedures, pre-natal apointments are not always easy to schedule according to your time, etc. You can't always get a private room after delivery & it depends on your case & availability. They also dont do any checkups for you before you'r 5-6 months pregnant & you have to go to a private clinic for checkups. I didnt like it , as I didnt get full benefits from the package I paid for, they almost killed my baby as they waited too long before the emergency CS. & I had awful post natal care. But many of my friends had great experiences there (who had normal deliveries) Many ladies here used City hospital & they were happy with it. @WA- Were you at Al wasl recently? is there any point in going to Al wasl before the 5th month to register? I had an emergency c-sec at Al wasl too....i was literally there on the last day with problems, had never registered there and wasnt hoping to go there at all. To me they saved me and my baby so my expereince was different. Now im pregnant with baby no 2 and considering going there....is there anything i should know and be prepared for for ante natal care? I want to visit a pvt gyn too...not sure if they share notes? I had DS 14 months back, & I heard that now they dont accept deliveries if you dont have a antenatal package with them. I had antenatal package, They gave me my 1st apt when I was 5.5 pregnant & they advised me to go to a private clinic for checkups before the apt date. I'm not sure about notes, but what was really irritating is seeing a different Dr. each time I had a checkup, so I had to go through the details about my pregnancy again & again. & You have to register earlier than the 5 months (I dont remember before which week), or they will not give you a package, the earlier the better. You also have to live within the area of their coverage as they ask for your house rent contract. edited by wickedangel_78 on 18/01/2011

Pretty in Pink: it helps to have that insurance coverage...is it possible for you to change your package? You may change your mind about the govt hospital and then be stuck with few options. American and City are known to be the best. If you take a new insurance coverage make sure you clarify the maternity clause as most of them ( if not all) have a 6 month waiting period before you can claim maternity charges.

Hubby and I are starting to thinking about planning a pregnancy for our first baby. We have insurance thought his company, but it doesn't cover maternity and they don't give us the option to top it up. I've read through previous threads and see that Al Wasl is a highly recommended hopsital for pregnancy check ups and delivery. I did hear that husbands are only allowed in with you during the final stages of labour and not at all if an emergency C-section is required, but I couldn't see anything about it on the website. I don't really like the sound of that, I think I would want my hubby with me all the way. What do you think about this? I see their current costs, which don't seem too bad and at least prevents us having to take out a personal plan for me and waiting for 10 months for the maternity element to kick in. I've never had a baby before so have no idea what to expect, what I need to know, where to go and what sort of costs are invoved. Any idea/comments would be welcome. Thank you. x
