To all the mothers out there,

I'm pretty much done buying baby gear, but am considering a rocking/glider chair.

Is it worth buying? Of those who have bought one, do you use it regularly for newborns?

Thanks,
;)

Thanks for all the tips and comments mummies!! That's a big help... I think I'll check out the Ikea chair for something to sit on at least - otherwise I'll be standing :)

Agree with the replies below on not starting bad habits your bub will soon assosiate with sleep. But I have got SO much use out of my comfy feeding chair (which BTW is a cheapy from IKEA;-) ) Some nights...especially during growth spurts, I'd feed baby, fall asleep burping baby, wake up and feed baby again and so on...until morning. I know it's a no-no, but I've done it with both my boys, not by choice but for sheer exhaustion. I got that one and did that too! It's a really nice nursing chair if you throw a couple of blankets over the arms - just enough recline and bounce to help you get up again... and yes, I have on occasion nodded off in it (during the dreaded 1h-2h feed).

I have the one from babyshop and it's god sent. DS is a reflux baby and I had/ am spending a lot of time keeping him upright after he's done nursing and I don't know what I would have done without it. Sometimes when I am in a marathon feeding session (growth spurts, illness etc) it has helped to get some rest for my back. But I would definitely not recommend it to put bubs to sleep - maybe you can rock until the baby is drowsy and then put him down in his cot.

A comfy chair for feeding, yes. A rocker/glider chair for getting baby to sleep, no. Thats my opinion anyway. Try and teach your baby from the start to self settle. It will be your saving grace if your bub can self settle without any aid. From day 1 I've put my baby in her cot and not done anything at all to settle her and she's never had a problem self settling. Try not to get them used to something that will be damn hard to wean them off.

don't consider it for baby - consider it for you, at around 2am, feeding bubs. A rocking chair is lovely, but a comfy chair is all you really need. Most definitely don't already consider it a tool for getting your baby to sleep - you aim should be teaching your baby how to get to sleep on its own - theory being a wonderful thing!

Hmm, it's a hard one because sometimes you'll do anything to get any sleep with your newborn but as a mother of 3, all of which have challenged us sleepwise in different ways, I would say no. The best intention from the start is to let your baby settle themselves to sleep with minimal help. 90% of babies and parents won't learn this skill but you've no chance of being in the 10% who magically manage it if you start with a rocking glider thingy.

Don't do it! DD got used to us rocking her in her glider, she wouldn't sleep any other way. We had to wean her out of it! Was tough. Start as you mean to go on IMO> HTH
