so my son is 6 month old and about 2-3 weeks ago i introduced solids to him..started with avocado, wasnt a favourite so quickly moved on to carrots and bananas..i gave him the above each for 3,4 days ,just about a teaspoon, however every night he would wake up with cramps and tummy ache,so after 8 days i gave it a rest for about 10 days and the tummy ache dissapeared. Yesterday tried to give him a tiny bit of sweet potato, however again at 4 am he had cramp/tummy ache, however not anything close to before. he also vomited/gulped just before this.
tried again today with the sweet potato and 10 min after he had 1 teaspoon he vomited.

he has also been pooping 3-4 times a day since i introduced solids to him.
im thinking i should just give up and wait for another month o so ,as i will be home with my mum. clearly im doing something wrong!!

Just to let you know that there will be a morning of talks for breastfeeding and expectant mums at Al Wasl Hospital on Saturday 28th May, including a talk on introducing solids. The speakers will also be available for individual questions. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_pregnancy_babies_breastfeeding_workshop_6467.aspx

hi summertime, perhaps let your DS play with the food as HK mentioned. I found when DS would go through periods of not wanting to eat I'd put some of the food on the high chair table for him to play with - he loved it and then in between him either trying to feed himself or playing with it he'd actually let me get some spoonfulls in too. Another friend of mine had major troubles with her son trying to get him to eat solids so she mixed in with his bottle (veggies and fruit would go in) and used a wider hole teet. He was about 8 months before he decided to start feeding himself and has never liked to be fed by someone else, went from having it in the bottle to feeding himself. A good way to get babies to eat is to eat with them so perhaps if you aren't already, have your breakfast / lunch / dinner when he is having his. I find this works really well with DS. He eats much more at breakfast and lunch as I eat with him than he does at dinner time when I'm not eating with him (because I've never been organised enough to have ours ready by 5.30). HTH. Hope he eats plenty for you soon ;)

Summertime - if he's showing an interest in the food that you're eating, give him some... it's as simple as that (as long as it's not really salty or full of sugar!). Follow his interest and his cues... in fact, that's pretty much the basics for all early years education! You know, I really do think we beat ourselves up about this too much. You're an attentive mum, so as long as you supervise his eating and steer clear of things that could give an adult a nasty bout of food poisoning (partially cooked eggs and such), then there is actually very little that can go wrong. Let him play with it too, if that's what he wants to do - he may need to explore his food before putting it in his mouth (would any of us really be happy eating something we're just given, without even seeing it?!). Mealtime frustrations are often our frustrations, not the baby's, but our fussiness about "eating properly", "not being messy" or "eat it all up!" can rub off on the kids and they will antagonise it or take it on board and become fussy too. Relax, launch in and enjoy the process and let your baby lead. The books may be good for recipes, but that's about it - they weren't written with your son in mind!

Dont forget to give him cool boiled water as well as B/F. Start off with a few spoons of baby rice and build up slowly.

it takes time and each baby is different. When my first was hitting 9 months he was eating chunky stuff, whereas my second gags. He took a while at the beginning and did the same thing as your LO. I also started with letting him play with the spoon and have him put it in his mouth because sometime its also the texture of the spoon that they have to get use to.

sometimes he is willingly open his mouth and sometimes not-probably more no than yes,he sometimes swallows and sometimes it comes out..i spoke to his doctor yesterday and was told to just continue as its new, not used to,etc..so gave him some today and will see how he goes..he wants to put and eat everything else but the food i give him, when i drink water he wants to grb the bottle, when i eat he tries to take my food. why this is so difficult i have no idea.. according to Annabel Karmel, she says that sweet potatoe and carrot are excellent first foods, and he is on sweet potatoe now..oh and i am exclusively breast feeding

I just replied to your other thread about your bub getting tummy pains, that maybe he was getting constipated. Mine had a little trouble with that. Fruits and water help with this. Also Im not sure if ur b/f or formula? Especially if it's formula, babies will need more fluid to avoid constipation. A friend of mine had problems when she moved her baby up to the 'progress formula' at 6 mths... is that something u have done recently?

My DD suffered with the cramps for a week or so during the night and also messed with her daytime sleeps when we started her on solids at 6 months. We choose to persevere and introduced new foods slowly for this reason. The poo's would wake her up and she would be upset. We started with rice/cereal at 11am, giving 40ml or so of her milk first then a teaspoon or two of the rice and then the rest of her bottle. We did this for about a week then we moved the rice to the morning feed again with her bottle, gave the 11am milk and then lunch at 12.30pm of carrot puree for a week. Then we introduced dinner after the 3/4th week of the carrot and for B/f we would introduce a new food ie apple/pear/sweet potatoe so that we had all day to watch for a reaction. Then once passed we would move it to lunch or dinner. Good luck, it is tough. X

Summertime - has you baby lost the "tongue thrust reflex"? Is he willingly opening his mouth and actually swallowing any food? Is he FF or BF'ed?

Summertime, I really hope you can find a solution to your baby's discomfort. This is your second thread on this, so you must be worried, and rightly so. In both threads you have been given some wonderful advice, mainly to start your baby off with just simple 'ol rice cereal. Have you gone back to the basics and done this?

I would start your baby off on baby rice after a couple of weeks I would move on to pureed veg like cauliflower, carrot etc, its always better to start with vegetable to avoid babies developing a taste for sweet tasting food (ie fruit) I always fed at lunch time so they had time to digest the food before going to bed. Not all babies are ready for solids at 6 months; some are not ready until well into the second half of their first year so I wouldn't worry if your little one isn't just yet. Is he displaying all the signs of readiness? This page (among others) has a list: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-when.html Good luck! xx

When are you feeding him? Because it sounds like an evening feeding disagrees with him; try rice cereal in the morning - he should digest it in a few hours and rice cereal is very low in allergens which is why you usually have to start with it then move onto butternut, carrots or another bland vegetable after a few days. Potato is not a good one to start with since it is very high in complex starch. I wouldn't wait another month; maybe see your GP/paed?

i started my DD on baby rice to start. Gave her that for a week, and then introduced a new taste, like pureed apple, and then mixed it with a bit of pureed pear. Then added a new taste each week. Im not sure about the tummy aches though, sorry. Maybe just try the baby rice to start and see how he goes with that. Good Luck
