Hello fellow bumpettes,
Want to fly to uk to visit family and due late September. Having a normal pregnancy so far, my 3rd!
Do you think it's safe to fly if I'm back mid Aug?
Am nervous as my bump is big and hoping I'll manage the 7hr journey.

It never actually becomes "dangerous" to fly when pregnant (unless you have medical complications), airlines just don't want you to give birth on their planes so prefer women not to fly after a certain point in the pregnancy.

I flew when I was 36 weeks pregnant and had a doctors letter with me. They asked me to see the doctors letter before i boarded the flight. The flight was fine, just bring bottles of water to stay hydrated. It was also a 7 hour flight.

Hi I flew at 29 weeks back to uk with my 6 and 4.5 year old. I've done this flight lots since both where small but it was pretty uncomfortable towards the last 3 hours of flight. I made sure I was up and about a lot drank loads of water thankfully positioned next to the toilet . I always book the same seats if I can but if I could have chose different it would have been the seats at the bulk head with leg room as you never know who can be very rude and inconsiderate infront of you and recline right back so seats on your bump!!! Needless to say this lady who had had kids got a few headphone and blankets on her head after refusing to move the seat so I could go the loo! Yes get a doctors note they will ask you how far you are and you need the letter to cover your return flight back. Good luck and enjoy the uk wish I was going back but I'm due in 4 days :-)

Hi Sara I'm due end of September too - I'm flying back to the UK next week (with a letter saying I'm 27+3 because I'm carrying big too) and will fly back August 26th when I'm 35-+3, with a new letter from my GP issued the week before. BA are happy up to 36 weeks with a letter once you're after 28 weeks (or if you look big and you think they'll question you!). I flew around the same time when I was pregnant with no.1 on a longer flight to the US and was fine - as previous posters have said, get some compression socks, drink lots of water and get up and walk about. Totally depends how you are feeling at the time, but it's fine so long as you're comfortable. Hope that helps?

Thank you for all your advice ladies. I'm still in two minds about travelling but feel more positive after reading your posts. I hope to brave it and fly!

FYI the note is only goof for X number of days... i want to say 8 or 9 days.... i was flying from houston texas to chicago when i was about 7 months along and very big... i had my dr note but i lined up to expire the day after i was flying well when my flight out of houston was canceled and it was a big mess to get me on another flight i ended up flying out the next day... no problem until i got to chicago and the told me my letter was now a day too old and i explained my flight was delayed etc... they went through this whole thing calling managers etc... it was a mess i eventually got on the flight (not without me raising h*ll) but didnt think they were going to let me. i was furious, thankfully they held the plane for me and i waddled on with my 3 year old in tow... it was a great experience :)

I just flew a 14 hour flight to Canada from Dubai (1 hr stopover in Doha). As long as your doctor allows you to fly- and provides you a "Fit to Fly" note you should be fine. Some airlines have their own policies and will not take you regardless of the note, so you need to check with the airline. I look bigger than I am and even though I am ok to fly (by the airlines policies) they still asked to see a note. Good thing I had one on me just in case. advice: wear compression stockings- drink plenty - and walk plenty (the constant urge to pee, made me get up and walk every 30 mins). My dr also made me take two shots of an an anticoagulant just because i had such a long flight.

My friend flew Emirates yesterday to Glasgow and the pursor came up to her before the flight took off to ask her how far a long she is. She was then told they would need to see a doctors letter if she was 28 weeks to say she is safe to fly. Luckily she is only 26 weeks and is carrying very small anyway.

Try to get some compression socks. The doc insisted I have some for flying while pregnant as apparently you're at a greater risk for clots during pregnancy.

My understanding is that most airlines require a doctor's note to say you are fit to fly once you are 32 weeks and you can't fly after 36 weeks. If you are big best to get a note to be on the safe side even if you are earlier than that. I find flying very uncomfortable when pregnant but it's different for everyone and 7 hours isn't too long.
