Along with eating sweets and carving pumpkins, arguably the most important part of Halloween is dressing up – and this is something the whole family can get involved in.

Traditionally you would dress as scarily as possible, but nowadays it seems anything goes, with people playing at being characters from films and famous faces from history.

1. Coming to America

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s eldest daughter Blue Ivy is already considered a trendsetter – after all, Beyoncé recently deemed her a “cultural icon” in a trademark dispute. So it’s no surprise when she’s the star of the family’s annual matching Halloween costumes, which consistently pay tribute to major moments in black culture. One of the stand-out years was 2015, when the trio dressed up as characters from the Eddie Murphy film, Coming To America.

2. Power Rangers

In 2016 Kourtney Kardashian and her kids Mason, Penelope and Reign nailed the matching costume brief by dressing up as the Power Rangers. Just two years later though, Kardashian experienced something lots of parents go through, posting a throwback photo of their outfits with the caption: “My kids don’t want to do a group costume with me this year.” All the more reason to go all-in on outfits with your children when you can.

‘Low-key’ isn’t really Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s style when it comes to Halloween costumes. Previous efforts with their son Silas have included elaborate outfits inspired by Toy Story and Trolls, but last year was perhaps their best yet. The family honoured The Lego Batman Movie and dressed up in human-sized Lego outfits, which didn’t look particularly easy to walk in.

5. Star Wars

Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka can always be relied on for spectacular family costumes with twins Gideon and Harper. Highlights include the family dressing as characters from the Wizard Of Oz and Alice In Wonderland, but our favourite is when they dressed up as the iconic cast of Star Wars.

6. The Addams Family

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden took on the characters of Gomez and Morticia Addams for Halloween in 2013, dressing their kids as Wednesday and Pugsley. We’re likely to see a whole lot of Addams family costumes this year, as a new animated version of the original Nineties film is set to hit cinemas.
