Why Having Some 'Me Time' Is Important For Mums

Like many mums in Dubai, I was holding myself to an unattainable standard of what I believed a good mother would do. I desperately wanted to be a perfect mum.

What I’ve learned through the journey of motherhood so far is that there is no such thing as a perfect mum. Motherhood is not a test. You cannot score a 100%.

It’s my 3rd month now without any Nanny/full time helper at home. My nanny ran away after 2 years with us; and I suddenly found myself helpless with a full-time job till 6 pm and 2 kids to take care of.

I know it’s not the end of the world and there are many full time working mums with no helpers, but at that time it seemed it is and it made my goal of being a perfect mum even harder to attain!

I can’t say it is easy, and you don’t lose balance and focus along the way, but it’s definitely not impossible.

After some time I sorted things out. The kids are happy now at a full-time day care, at least they are professionally taken care of. I found a part-timer to help with house errands, but in between I totally lost my “me time”!

Every time I looked forward to a “me time” I found myself too tired or too guilty to leave the kids with someone they are not very used to!

But then I noticed that falling into this monotonous routine has made me unhappy and a robot-like mom. I have forever believed that when we take the time to invest in our happiness, we are investing in the happiness of our families. A happy mum is a better mum! So I decided to be one again!

Simple Advice To Getting Your ‘Me Time’

You may have to skip doing the laundry, or put dad in charge of the nighttime routine, ask a trustworthy family friend to take over, hire a professional babysitter; but you definitely need your ‘ME TIME”! It is O.k. to take time off from all the responsibilities.

Whether you are a stay at home mum, a working mum. Whether you have a helper, or you don’t, at the end of the day you are a “MUM” and that alone is the greatest yet hardest job one can ever have!

That’s why you deserve to rest and take care of yourself, whether it is sipping a caramel macchiato, getting a pedicure, or having a good meal while watching your favourite movie; do what makes YOU happy from time to time to refuel and energise!

Let go of perfection, and hence let go of mommy guilt. Remember ALL YOU CAN DO IS BE THE BEST YOU!
