So I just got back from our tour of Al Wasl and we are def going there! The Practice Development Midwife showed us around, answered all questions and put our minds at rest about my husband being with me as much as I can stand to see his face!!! They seem very keen to promote natural birth with as little intervention as possible and the baby stays with you all the time. All we have to do now is get our ar*es in gear and get my health card and register. 27 weeks gone this weekend and I think my Dad was about to blow a gasket cos we hadn't made up our minds about a hospital!!

Thanks Frannie, you see - its me being paranoid (didn't read properly!). That's a great news that he could stay with you for so long, hopefully i will be lucky enough too! how long did you stay in the hospital when you delivered? Is the fee of AED 2,000 for private room per day (24h)?

Apricot, thank you t for the information, are you 100% sure about those hours 8am - 8pm? i will have to get someone to be with me as i am terrified when thinking of being there alone without my husband. Does any one can recommend a Doula in Dubai? I decided i am going to deliver in AW. I am having my visits now in Al Bada Clinic and i must say that except the slight delays in appointments (up to 1.5 h)they have been good with me. From 28 week (in 6week) i will have my visits in AW just to familiarize myself with the hospital, stuff there.

Go to Wasl Hospital!! They have all the state of the art equipment, and the only hospital to have FULL facilities, like premature care etc, so let's hope all will go smooth with your delivery, but if there are any serious complications you will end-up in WASL anyway as they are the only hospital authorized to deal with serious complications. A good friends neighbour was an American man in charge of given hospitals in Dubai a certain international qualification certificate, not sure how or what, but what I was told is that it was the most most acclaimed status a hospital could have, and AL WASL was the first and IS the only hospital in Dubai that had this certificate for all their departments. Another friend stayed in al Wasl for an emergency appendix operation for her 3 year old and the care was amazing! I visited them and must say I was impressed! Myself i went back to Australia to give birth, but if I would have known about the care at al Wasl before, I wouldn't have made the trip and delivered here. ETA: I did my prenatal care at Belhoul European on Al diyafa street, and they were great. And my Ultra sounds at the Fetal Medicine in Dubai Health care city. (they could tell I was having a boy at 13 weeks - Dr told me he was 85% sure, and it was a boy indeed). edited by Sanzeveria on 31/01/2011

Just an extra aspect to consider if you are thinking of paying upfront and claiming back - make sure the insurance company will actually pay back 100% of the cost. I did this a few years ago with American Hospital as I wanted the same surgeon I'd seen previously and my insurance company said they'd pay 80%, which I was happy with, then when I claimed they would only give me 80% of their 'benchmark' figure for the surgery I had. I ended up paying 45k for the surgery and only got 23.5k back.

If you do a search on here you will get some good info. I know Medcare had good reports and then when I did a search here, there was a lot of negative feedback! Zuleikha has also had good reports. Its very hard to know where is the best place to go to. Speaking with people who have been here for years, they keep pointing me towards Al Wasl. So I am none the wiser really!! Been in contact with Al Wasl again this morning, so hopefully will be getting the tour next week. At this rate, I will be giving birth at home!! :)

Thanks Zoeesta for your reply. Im only 16 weeks at the moment and im just seeing a local gynaecologist at the moment in the area that im living in (springs). But soon il hve to be referred to a hospital. Did you find out any info regarding Belhoul, NMC, Zuleikha or Cedars hospitals ? only these are covered under my insurance. I really want a room of my own and definately want an epidural. edited by Musarath on 30/01/2011

Apricot, you seem to be happy with Al Wasl. I am just terrified to be honest of being left on my own if my husband is not allowed in!

Hi Musarath! Been offline for ever and just catching up again now! We are 25 weeks today and I said to my husband this morning that something has to be decided ASAP!!! We are still seeing Dr Jamini at Welcare, but to be honest I really don't want to deliver there. We are going to arrange a tour of Al Wasl this week and see what we think. My husband is Emirati, so I don't know to be honest if we can work that to our advantage at all with Al Wasl and the room situation! I really don't want to be left on my own or with his mum!!! All I know is that to my knowledge, we need to have a final decision by week 28 - thats 3 weeks away!!!!

From what i understood it looks like your husband and mother wherer with you during the labour? I am just afraid that even we book the private room he wont be able to be with me there. From what i heard the local ladies have the priority if comes to private rooms ( on busy day). If you get a private room for after the delivery at Al Wasl, then your husband can only be with you from 8am to 8pm. You can, however, have a female friend or relative stay the night (no extra charge and once you tell them, hospital will provide a fold-out bed and free extra meals). To get the private room, your husband will have to go to the admissions office at least once a day to place new request for private room and check availability. From what I saw, most private rooms were vacated after Asr or Maghrib prayer, so afternoon is the best time to go to admissions office and place request.

Zoeesta - have you decided which hospital your going to? I too am in the same position as you - can only go to the ones you stated at the beginning of the thread. But i dont have a clue as to which ones out of those will be good.
