I did the vintage watch thing for my hubby's 40th last year - a Rolex made the same year he was born - he was blown away. I got it from a great company in London who Fedexed it over within a few days vintagewatchcompany dot com. Their after sales service is excellent as well, I would definitely recommend this. lovely idea but how much would something like that cost?

Thank you for all your responses. In the end, I bought him a Daytona Rolex Watch (which he always wanted) and the engraved Mont Blanc Pen to have at work in his office. Also booked a lovely surprise meal for him at Reflets Par Pierre Gagnaire. I phoned the Manager of this French restaurant, and with his help organised a six course meal totally bespoke to match all the favourite foods he likes and surprised him with the menu too. It was great to see his face every time a meal came to the table....They even gave us a the menu to take home with us as a keepsake. Got to say that the restaurant was excellent, staff well attentive, (but not in your face), food amazing and ambience was just right. He was thrilled. Also planned a dinner at a restaurant this Friday for all our friends to join us (that he doesn't know about)..another surprise.

I took my husband to Al Maha Desert resort for 3 nights. It was amazing. Not sure what the pricing is right now but his 40th was in September. You may want to check with something like. Just a romantic get away that you both can enjoy.

Try a nice dinner cruise on Bateaux Dubai. Went on it in London on River Thames (about 10 years back) and also in Dubai (about 2 years back) on the creek and loved it

Buy him 40 little presents...some expensive, some silly, some romantic...some downright naughty...and give them to him through out the day... also book a special dinner and go out wearing nothing but a long coat and a smile....hehehe..hmm....perhaps not in Dubai!

Don't make too much fuss about it, I just turned 40 last month and I hated my life and when ever my husband or my kids start saying you are 40 now I felt that they are telling me you are soooo old..... do as you do it every year. HATE YOU 40 :( I'm sad for you that this is how you feel. It's just a number, but I made a conscious decision to celebrate turning 40...will be the same when 50 rolls around. :)

Does he love watches? I have learned lots of men do...the only jewellry most of them wear after all. Your timeline is short, but you could search for a vintage watch from the year of his birth. There are some good online watch dealers around...you'll soon get a feel for who's reputable and who's not. I can give the details of the fellow in Canada I bought from if you're interested.
