A scam artist named Peter Rauhut (German), is pretending to be a realtor and renting out apartments and villas on Palm Jumeirah. He stole 16.000 AED from me and a friend.
If anyone else had an experience with him I would like to know.

I don't think the amount matters much in situations like this. It's criminal to offer something for sale (or rent in this case) without having the rights to do so. It's like me advertising for sale all the abandoned cars in the airport parking areas, taking money, and going, "Oh I can't [b'>actually[/b'> sell them to you, but since I showed them to you and you want them, you owe me money."

Speaking as an ex-real estate agent, in earlier years of the real estate boom (when vacant property was scarce) we would ask for a (non-refundable) deposit to secure (and hold) the apartment until a contract was signed, and then it was turned into a refundable security deposit to the held by the landlord until the end of tenancy. In these days of abundant property vacancies, of course, this does no longer make sense. As this scam agent still appears to continue working, I would suggest to report this matter to the police in addition to RERA.

This one stinks. 6 months? Unbelievable really. I suppose some people take these things lightly.

how do you know they've done nothing ? He cashed the check and send an email that he could not get the apartment anyway and we asked to get the money back and [b'>have now waited since July.[/b'> yes ? does she say what action she's taken in the interim ? No, suspect nothing bar a post on here, if she had she wouldn't be posting now would she? If she has left it 6 months without legal follow up she deserves to be ripped off.

we had to give a deposit when we first got here and moved into an aprtment, serapnina, thought that and your security deposit, maintenence and agent fees were the same regardless if villa or flat? Oh ok. We haven't had to give a deposit to secure an apartment.

Strange. Never heard of anyone giving a deposit to rent an apartment.

Did you write a cheque out to a company or to the actual guy who was posing as an agent?

Hi grigo 123, You can open a case against him in the police station belonging to the area where that happened. For the Palm area it might be Jebel Ali or Al Barsha. If he is in the country your chances are very good. They will investigate the case and call the guy. If you need more details or info, email me at scfc21 at hotmail dot com.

Do you have a receipt? Go to the police and file a report and they will assist you in getting your money back.

said he had an apartment in Fairmont residences, showed it to my friend, agreed on the price and asked for a deposit of 16.000 AED. I wrote the check since my friend was not resident yet. He cashed the check and send an email that he could not get the apartment anyway and we asked to get the money back and have now waited since July. I saw him one day driving around here on the Palm, I live her myself, so just wanted to warn others. Hopefully, justice will happen soon for a person like this.
