...get a job if you have "Housewife. Not allowed to work." in your passport (YES...that's what yours will say ;) ). :-o Well my "job" will have to be losing about 100kgs of accumulated fat from all the "dirty juice" drinking Mwah haha! No, seriously, thanks for that. I always wondered what it was about but didn't want to hijack a thread to ask. OK, off to get my head around the school applications. I cannot believe how much paperwork is required. It is frying my brain! edited by Buy me a Pony on 18/01/2011 With apologies for keeping you off the topic ;) , feel free to email me if you want more info about life over there. (if I haven't already offered! lol) We had five years in Dubai and came back to soggy Qld three months ago. mirdif dot mum at gmail dot com

Resolution for New Year: No alcohol. Still going. Was a social drinker - roughly 3-4 units per week. But decided to actually give it up. And feeling really great. I wouldnt think 3-4 units aweek would have a massive effect, you dont really have anything to give up. ;)

Hi BMAP... "NOC" is a No Objection Certificate. It's a document from your visa sponsor, required to undertake various activites in the UAE, eg change jobs/sponsors, get a job if you have "Housewife. Not allowed to work." in your passport (YES...that's what yours will say ;) ).

it's not difficult BMAP, unless your employer won't stamp it. It's pretty painless and the license will be ready in a couple of weeks. Forms are available in the stores. :) I guess it's just the regulation. But then... "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Thanks for all the responses, it gives me fairly good idea of the process anyway. I actually don't drink [i'>that [/i'>much, but DH will be quite senior in his company so I expect we may be entertaining, plus I want to bring my BBQ and a barbie is un-Australian without good friends, neighbours and a decent wine or beer. ;-) One more question for those with abundant patience: What is an NOC? I have seen this acronym in relation to maids too, I think, but never understood what it meant.

I wasn't actually quoting the whole step by step process, I was only giving advice re wife on DH's licence. I am sure once the poster gets the form she'll be capable of following the instructions to complete the process. ;)

If both husband and wife are supposed to have a license (or even a tourist) and say the wife doesn't work (as a tourist obviously wouldn't either), who gives the NOC to get the actual license? Dh fills in form gets noc from his employer, fills in your particulars on the same form. You just need to hand in your photo as well as DH's when the licence comes back it is only in DH's name and photo on, but your details are kept electronically, at the booze shops and police and you can take the card and buy booze on your own. :) Actually - this is not quite right. On the form there is space for the wife - who has to sign and attach photo. the company also has to sign and stamp the form - a copy of tenancy, passport, residence and labour contract have to be attached.

OK, I won't deny I like the occasional drop. But I'm finding it difficult to understand the law regarding alcohol out there. I've done a search, but can't find anything on site. Would be grateful if someone could give me the "Low-down on Alcohol for Dummies" please. For example: 1. In order to buy bottled alcohol in Dubai to drink at home - do [b'>both [/b'>DH and I have to have a license? [b'>YES[/b'> 2. If we don't want to buy bottled alcohol but want to drink in a pub/hotel - do we have to have a license? [b'>YES[/b'> 3. If we want to entertain local residents in our home with alcohol - do they have to have a license? [b'> YES[/b'> 4. If people are here staying with us on a tourist visa - do they have to have a license to drink with us or in pub? [b'>No they can only legally drink in a licensed premises and not leave that premises with alcohol in their sytem.[/b'> 5. Where do we get the license from and what kind of information do we need to provide? [b'>From an alcohol shop the form once you have your residence visa's in place then your employer has to sign.[/b'> 6. Do DH or I need to have a license to bring alcohol into the country - say a crate of Margaret River Red or a bottle of Hendricks, for example? [b'> YES[/b'> Have I missed anything? Thanks in advance *hic*. edited by Buy me a Pony on 17/01/2011 Better look at turning TT!!!
