We get along reasonably well enough...as long as we don't talk about politics, which is quite hard as she's very liberal and was a political activist in her early days and a successful lawyer for a liberal law firm. In other words it's hard for her to keep her mouth shut, while I'm much more conservative. She is well mannered but I do know that in an ideal world her son would have married another liberal progressive, or at least another high achieving woman. But I'm happy to be a housewife and I have no desire to climb the career ladder (although I'll never let her forget that I scored higher on the SATs than DH did and had a higher college GPA). I'm sure she did initally view me as DH's rejection of her and what she stands for, which is ridiculous for DH loves her very much and wouldn't change a iota of her character. It's taken her a while to come to terms with me but there's now respect between the two of us, so we're well-behaved around each other. She does love her son and grandsons, which is the most important factor. edited by Tallybalt on 14/03/2011

I think MILs are also human ( ducking for cover) ... just like none of us is perfect ... they too can have flaws ... even its the same case with our own mums and friends ... so why should MIL's and DIL's and SIL's be any different mine has lots and lots of good qualities but at the same time there are things about her that drive me crazy ... and i know she too isnt very fond of me ... so the feeling is mutual ... but yeah to answer the question in the title ... yeah i can get on with her or may be i m too peaceloving and like to keep quiet instead of reply and face the heat

Yes probably better than my DH does but all the same I'm glad they are in the UK not here. MIL is hard work, - we've a theory that as she's got older she's regressed now behaves worse than a terrible two year old.... squabbles over everything or repeats herself endlessly rather than allowing silence even if everyone else is watching TV, swimming, eating etc then gets cross if we don't respond.

I put up with my ex MIL under duress and sufferance. God she was a nightmare! In fact she didn't and I think still doesn't get on with her own son, ie ex DH!!! But ex FIL (but not allowed to call him "ex") is of a different ilk altogether. See him every time I go back home and we speak regularly on the phone. He jokingly says that he will always only ever one daughter in law and that is me! Aw!!! Not sure if ex DH's wife would like to hear that!!!! ;)

when h*ll freezes over... on a second thought, no she is pure evil, when ever she have any chance, she have to prove that she is evil. c'mon I had just give birth of my last baby, he was only 3 days old, the whole family visiting my home, not a single help to me, had to serve every body, then she tells me front of every body: you didn't lose weight at all!! Then I gave her the answer she deserves: well last time you give birth was half a century ago, I guess you had forgotten about every thing relates to femininity... I guess since then I don't have in-law's visits.... Heaven!

10 years of marriage and MIL has finally succeeded at bringing in differences between DH and me. She is on her fifth "don't talk to me" phases and this time I dont think I want to make up. Edited for terrible grammar; I must be really upset responding to this thread. edited by Maple on 13/03/2011

My MIL remarried 6 months before our wedding, on her wedding day she tried to spill something personal to the wedding crowd, as I tried to shut her up I accidentally burnt her wedding dress with my cigarette. Well she should try and keep her mouth shut. The time we married in the June her marriage was over by the way!!!!!!!! the poor man escaped lightly. edited by salsB on 13/03/2011

After having twins, in a foreign country, no friends or family, she didn't call me for 2 weeks after the birth. Mine didn't call me at all after DS was born. Still didn't call me when she wanted to arrange a trip to my Mum's to meet him - she emailed DH and got him to ask me to ask my Mum if it was OK if she came. Then invited SIL without asking. And still didn't call me. And got SIL to email me to ask if I could pick them up from the airport.

My MIL is barely bearable as long as she is on her meds, which include anti depressants and Xanax..last time i spoke to her, she commented on my DD's nose ( who is her first grandchild) and not in a good way of course..so imagine when she was not on her meds! oh yes she is a classical example of neuroticism edited by Annabelle09 on 13/03/2011 Mine commented on a little whiny noise DS makes when he's just exhausted. She said, "Oh, what a weird little noise that is! How strange! Why is he doing that weird thing?" Uh, because you insisted he be kept up late so people could see him, cow-features. haha good one, can you suggest what I should say the next time she mentions it! bear in mind she is literally crazy meaning she has no problem swearing at me ( most auwful words ever) and scream! she scares everyone:(((

My Mo in law referred to me as her kindred spirit before I married her youngest son. Then it all changed very quickly once we were married. After having twins, in a foreign country, no friends or family, she didn't call me for 2 weeks after the birth. Hard to forget that sort of behaviour. But you know, you have to get over it for the sake of 'im indoors.

My list of DON'T DOs starts with not redorating the tables at my sons wedding with Hawaiian tat just because of having been there. It would not be a "nice surprise". OMG, that's unbelievable! But not something I'd have to worry about. It comes under 'thinking of someone else' - however misguided and utterly ludicrous! - and that's something she simply doesn't have a clue about.

You usually find that when a MIL does not like a DIL it is because she is disappointed with her son's choice. Not always. My sister's marriage was pretty much arranged (as in her MIL chose her for her son, and then they were introduced and got to know each other before deciding whether or not to get married...) but her MIL STILL doesn't like her even though she chose her! And my sister is not only super beautiful, but has a great personality and everyone usually loves her!

Used to think she was irritating, now after 3 years of marriage and 8 years together I've realised that my MIL is a BAD WORD of the highest order. Suspect she is trying to plant mines under our relationship so try very hard to rise above her passive aggressive nonsense, Now, as the mother of a son, I have a very long list of DON'T DOs when it comes to one day being a MIL. I am going to be the world's best MIL :D. Starting with having some manners and hospitality skills. I do get along with MIL as long as she doesn't interfere with my business, which normally she doesn't :) she also keeps feeding us :) which means I don't need to cook :D

no I don't either. But am trying to feel more kindly and forgiving since she is now old and very ill and am amazed she is still with us tbh. Lot of 'stuff' over the years, which I won't go into.

22 years of marriage and 25 years together and my MIL still asks her clairvoyants when her darling son will be divorced. She was positively beaming the day I left to come to Dubai and apparently doesn't even refer to me casually in conversation instead making it appear to her friends that my DH is divorced or widowed. But to give her her dues she is a much better Nana than my mum ever was and loves my children to bits.
