Plane like Child Seat Belt for Car ... ???

Hi

in the process of organising a trip to Thailand and have found that the packages being offered include airport/hotel transfers which is what we want/need. However they cannot guarantee that these transfers will have car seats for my 17 month old DD. Now I am very strict about having my baby strapped into the car but as she is in a toddler seat now (the maxi cosi axiss = very bulky to bring with and not very practical) I am wondering if there is such a thing as a child seat belt out there that can be connected to the normal seatbelt for those transfers?

ANy other way around this?

Cheers,
Curly

I saw a child wearing one of these in a taxi the other day and thought it was a fab idea so googled it. It's called the Ride Safer and seems to be suitable from age 3 so probably not suitable for OP but thought others might be interested. http://www.safetrafficsystem.com/

ok first up I am going to say that I make NO assertions about the safety of this suggestion, but to answer the original question, I have seen a similar device to a child's plane seat belt for dogs travelling in cars. It is more of a harness than just a lap belt like on a plane. If you are absolutely desperate, that may be an option to look into?

And on that subject, will be dragging child around SEA again this April, could I get away with taking only the bottom part of the booster? Has anyone come across a clever contraption like the one OP asked about? Am just off to do some research now so any leads very welcome.

COB, I've had the same worries when my child was that age and I ended up taking an old Britax with me whic doesn't weigh much. It's not ideal but it's better than nothing and is actually airline approved so you can use it on the plane. We even took it on the ferry to Tioman! You are welcome to borrow it if you choose to go in that direction.

Curly, where abouts in Thailand are you going to? I am travelling to Phuket soon and have found a business who has baby seat taxis. http://www.phuketbabyrentals.com/english/index.php http://www.kids-on-board.com/ Ozzy, we are going to Phuket also - hopefully in two weeks time (just waiting on DH's vacation approval which seems to be taking forever). When do you go? Thank you so much for those links on taxis with car seats, that is invaluable info, appreciate it. Have a great holiday. Curly

or behind their back [/b'>". so you would suggest they shouldn't wear a seatbelt at all??? Cars for MANY years only had lap belts - even in the front seat of cars. Whilst not ideal I would prefer my children to have a lap belt than no belt at all. This method is much safer than no seatbelt at all... As I said... if you HAVE to catch a cab and there is NO POSSIBILITY of a car seat/booster... this is MUCH safer than NOTHING! Perspective time! NOWHERE did i "suggest" not wearing a seatbelt at all.

Finally remembered the thing was thinking about...is called Sit n Stroll and the following link shows you more info http://www.lillygold.com/products/sit-n-stroll.html Not sure if you could perhaps hire/borrow/buy here but have definitely seen a few people using them in Dubai!! Might be worth searching on here perhaps. Anyway might be a solution worth considering - happy travels

If it is absolutely un manageable to get a child seat and providing just for short trips, we have been known to just put the seatbelt on and tuck the sash behind the kids.. that then gives them a lap belt at very least, without the danger of damage with the sash being in the wrong place... Usually this is in taxi's to and from airports. I do however lug my Graco booster seats (my kids are 3 & 6) with us when we go on extended holidays where we will be doing lots of driving. I like to look of the blow up ones though and might investigate further for our next summer hols.. I am VERY pro seatbelt/carseat... but I wouldn't fret and ruin a holiday with my kids for one airport journey without a car seat... as long as the child is restrained.. (and NOT on your lap!!!) sorry, but are you aware that wearing a poorly fitting (adult) seat belt can actually cause more injury in the event of an accident ? Seat belts are made to fit adults and do not protect small children properly. Booster seats work by raising the child up so the lap and shoulder belts are positioned properly across the child's chest and hips. Tucking the seat belt under the child's arm or behind their back also may cause more serious injuries during a crash. http://www.kansashighwaypatrol.org/faqs/belts.html

http://www.gbdriver.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=78_85&products_id=534 I've just been looking for something as I worry if we ever have to take our DD in a taxi... This product seems ideal although I've never seen anyone using it. It looks great but it's for children from 3 years of age and 15kg so would be no use to the OP.

Can you contact the big car hire companies who are based at teh airport you fly into and see if you can just hire a car seat from them to go into the hotel transport. Most of the big companies, Avis and Hertz all hire child car seats maybe they would be happy to rent the seat on its own - worth a try.....

Hi CurlyOB, If you mean the lap strap, i have never seen such a thing to buy anywhere. They do kind of serve different purposes though. The lapstrap wouldn't give your baby any side protection in a vehicle impact. Side impact on an aircraft is very unlikely and the lapstrap serves more from turbulence related injuries and movement (eg being thrown) rather than close range impact. Hope you find something suitable, it is a worry when travelling with the little ones trying to keep them safe. Enjoy Thailand, wish we were going back soon.

What about one of those car seats that change into a pushchair type thing - can't for the life of me remember what they are called! Basically is a car seat (will fit on plane seat too I think) which has wheels and extended handle so you can use like a pushchair? Hopefully someone will come along with the right name so you can check it out. I gave a lift to a girl one day and her LO was in one and seemed like a really good idea as she could use in taxi's, on holiday etc and not have to carry anything extra.

Unfortunately yes, I may be wrong but unless you can hire one at your destination your only option may be to travel with your own seat. It's no fun I know (I have two LO's) but better safe than sorry eh :-)

She is 17 months Andrea, is this too small for a booster? I would have thought so?
