I know this thread has moved on from the grandparents comment but I already suffer from MIL being here too often and shudder to think about my high energy mum being with me for more than 3 weeks. So if your heart is melting at grandparents taking kids out, please feel free to take my MIL and mom. I will keep DIL and dad as they are very relaxed and non interfering.

Each consulate sets a minimum wage for people from their country who work here. Educate yourself and find out what you have to pay as a minimum. That should be your starting point. And do you every wonder if these stories of children being abused by maids, or maids stealing from their employers come about b/c the employer is right royally scr*wing them? just a thought ...sorry this comment not aimed at the OP but the other scrouges on this thread. I agree! Why on earth would you mistreat or take advantage of someone who you leave alone with your children???!!

While some posters say that if the wage is accepted by the employee, then its not too low for them. That is not true. As Zaabs pointed out, its about desperation. And for the poster that said, 'well if they accept, its fine'..thats called exploitation. Its taking advantage of a desperate person. Just because they accept, doesnt make it right. There are so many people on a salary so low, not because they are happy with it, but because of no choice. Either this **** job with back breaking work for nothing, or their kids starve. And frankly, anyone who can live with themselves while knowingly exploiting a desperate person, is a lowlife with no ethics, morals, or integrity. And whats worse, is that in Dubai, the people that do this, are the same ones that act like the lady of the manor in her white tapered jeans, prada loafers, Gucci bag and face so tanned she looks like a shellacked skull and brag about how much they spent at Meydan or brunch at Fairmont...blah blah blah. I salute you, guess with what finger. sorry, but your money will never buy you class or integrity...I love the saying..."Money screams, wealth whispers".

If i was u id start off with 1400 dhs then say it will increase after 3 months and so on. See how happy u are with her work etc ....Also sepends if ure gonna give her a food allowence of will she eat ure food..... From experience u give them the high wage to start off with they may turn out to be lazy and try to cut corners. Give them an incentive and say u will get an extra so many dhs bonus at the end of the month if ure extremely happy with her work.

With reference to my original query which started the whole debate. A) I am not a stay at home mum. my children are grown up & have left the nest. B) Whilst my children were growing up I was a stay at home mum & I might add in my case, without help of grandparents. C) Require a "home helper" owing to deteriorating health issues D)Tried to ask a fair question with regard to salary Sorry that I seem to have upset so many Dont't take it personally. There are people who sit on here just waiting for a post/poster that they can tear to shreds. They lead very boring, unfulfilled lives. I don't have a maid so I am not going to give an opinion on what to pay, I shall leave that to others. :)

Please remember that that candidate would have to accept the offered salary. If they think that 650 is too low, they won't accept. And if they do accept that conditions, then it means that they are ok with that amount, isn't it? It's not about human rights or market levels when someone is so desp for a job they will accept it because they need to send money home to support their families. Something is better than nothing. I have a maid once a week though an agency and last week we cleaned all day, took the house apart and scrubbed everywhere. By 7pm when we had finished, my back was in agony, my arms ached and i felt exhausted. Now I clean everyday so i am not lazy and scared of hard work however, these maids so this EVERYDAY and its hard graft. On top of that, they are looking after the children, cooking dinners, doing the ironing and god knows whatever else is being demanded of them Put yourself in their place for a day, could you honestly do back breaking work all day long for a month and then get a salary of 650AED? Im really tired of hearing stories about maids who are being paid nothing and treated like slaves. Ladies, you are wives and mothers, its our job to cook and clean to some extent whilst taking care of OUR children at the same time. I understand that people need assistance, exp those who work but really, why does a stay at home mum really need someone to do EVERYTHING for her, thats the whole point of you being home, to take care of the house. This country really makes people lazy edited by Zaabs on 19/03/2011 I agree with you that this country makes people lazy and that's another subject altogether, but I am talking about the acceptance of the offered salary. Just a question, but would you accept a low salary if offered? I agree with what you wrote 100%, i was just expanding on it. I would do whatever it takes to feed my family and if that meant 650AED a month then so be it. however, doesnt make it right you know. Makes me so sad.

You didn't upset anybody, just the way the threads go... Mention a salary and it all goes to pieces. In answer to your original question, I think the average on these threads is around 1500dhs.;)

To stop all the arguments why don't all stay at home mums get rid of their maids and do their own housework and the working mums can bring granny across to look after the kids. Problem solved. :) :) :) WHAT? When I am a Granny I certainly won't be looking after my Grandchildren on a daily basis! *** that. ( And no I won't be a Fairy Godmother either! ( No offence those who do) Far too much enjoyable stuff to do! ;) ) Oh SM, we are singing from the same hymn sheet. I love my own kids, have been there and done that with all the kids groups and various committees but I have no intention of giving up my ME time to look after someone elses. I am just not that child friendly. :)

Problem solved. :) :) :) except for the poor maids then being out of work with no income to support their families and the economy's of at least 2 countries collapsing over night causing a ripple on effect through surrounding nations and eventually leading to the distruction of the earth as a result. sounds like a CIA plot to me :) Lol. Yes, and the world really is going to end next year because people who lived and died zonks of years ago made a calendar that just happened to stop there. :):):)

You can hire a Sri Lankan on Dh650 if you bring her over with an agency. Perhaps, do that and then raise it after a few months. Actually, this is not a bad idea... hear me out:cool: Some agencies (I've heard) actually take a proportion of the annual salary when you sign the maids up (sponsor is in the dark).... Also, the family back home know how much is going to be earnt.... Sooo, if you hire them for peanuts, they arrive and you pay them a fair wage, your maid may be surprised and very happy. She or he pays less "commission" to the agency and there is less pressure for them to send more money back home to the family and extended family. Hopefully the maid can actually keep some of the money that they have earnt and choose where she actually wants it to go .... Where did I hear this from? a maid;)

I wouldn't accept a low salary but I'm not desperate. If a maid is here on a visit visa and owing the people who brought her out the ticket and visa costs I'm sure she'd take a p*** poor salary.

VP, that is your choice and you can afford the luxury of being able to make that choice. A decent salary is a basic human right. As much as everyone will argue about market forces bla bla, 650 with top ups here and there is simply not acceptable. Set a salary and pay it or don't employ another.your opinion may be valid, but not always right. A nice surprise is better than never getting hired at all. Seriously VP do you really believe what you have written or just write to be provocative? A nice surprise, give me strength!
