I had a "lump" or rather hardness running from the edge of my breasts to midway pretty much throughout feeding DS - never painful or hot, but just very obviously a very full milk duct. I used to massage/ compress it whilst feeding DS to clear it. Never had the issue with my first!

I had a LOT of lumps in the first few weeks of breastfeeding, they were pretty painful and the only thing that kind of helped was massaging them and altering the latching positions so that baby drank from all sides of the nipple. Dont panic to fast, apparently its quite normal. I had so many lumps I was afraid I had tumors in there...kept asking my husband to feel and tell me if it looked normal. As someone already mentioned, best thing to do to get some peace of mind is to talk to a breastfeeding consultant. Hope this makes you feel better. xx

Ooh I loved the going on all fours idea... No book is gonna tell you that. Nothing like an experienced mom for BF advice:) will give it a try when I get any such issue. DD is five months and had minor issues but not any lumps so far, touch wood. Engorgement/ lumps and bad latch is a vicious cycle, one leads to the other and vice versa. If you are too engorged and baby is unable to latch properly, try to pump out. Close the room put on ur fav music or movie and pump pump pump. Empty your breasts while massaging. Do it even if u dont feed the expressed milk, new milk will be formed within an hour so don't worry about your baby. And persevere and don't doubt your and your baby's abilities:)

Hi, Are you seeing anyone to get help with your latching issues? If not I'm sure there will be a breastfeeding counsellor in your area if you want to let me know where you are I'd be happy to pass on details. The advice given so far is great, the latch issue may be because the breast is very full so baby can't quite take enough in but we'd need to assess it visually to really help. Take care Andy

Sounds like mastitis. I'm pretty sure I had the same thing a few weeks ago (or just severe engorgement) - it was accompanied by fever, chills and a headache. I put a hot water bottle on the sore breast and changed my feeding position each time (for me the football hold seemed to help drain that portion of the breast that was really sore if that makes any sense) so the suggestion of going on all fours and feeding from above is a good one. Also, massage like crazy just before and if possible, during feeding. It hurts but the massaging will help release the block. I did this and it went away on its own after 3-4 days without needing any antibiotics. Hope this helps!!

They get bigger and smaller as the milk fills and empties. And I found they would get really red too and soooo hard and painful. I never found that they moved other than like a normal gland would, just kind of wobbles about under the skin as you press it. I'd get it checked for piece of mind :)

It Is most probably milk. I have a really good remedy for it but it is not pretty so do it in private. lol. Lay your baby on the bed and get on all fours put your breast in your babies mouth. The lumps should disappear by the second feeding. Also do not be alarm f the milk that comes out is like ricotta cheese consistancy, It will not hurt your baby. Nursing in this position does two things gravity as well as the baby is allowed to more evenly get your whole aerola into her mouth. Better able to drain your breast Hope this helps I am now nursing my sixth child. all of them I have nursed up to eighteen months. I have used this position twice and only when I had more than one "lump" of milk

It may be the start of mastitis, when a milk duct becomes blocked and gets really hard and swollen and lumpy. I'd recommend to go see your Dr though as it can become very painful and you may need anti-biotics to shift it if it has become infected. You can still continue to feed your baby, it wont harm them as far as I know (google it just to be sure). Feeding your baby is the best thing as it keeps the milk flowing to flush out the build up. Good luck. I remember how painful it can be :)

ladies pls reassure me... have been having latching issues over the past few days, which i have now rectified.... as a result of soreness, i think i have a build up of milk on the left breast, and the whole breast is a little tender...normal so far, yeah? ok, so tonight i was feeding and massaging the milk down and i felt a small egg-like lump....obvious freak out ensued.... and connotations of lumps panicked me have since found another lump in the same breast but underneath....is this a build of milk, or should i go to the doc to check 4 cancerous lumps....i will b checking anyway to be on the safe side, but in the meantime, need some clarification... thanks in advance x edited by Clever Bubbles on 31/03/2011
