What medication to use for very awful heart burn during pregnancy

I have it since a while now and try all the "old and natural" things like eating almonds or drinking milk before I go to bed, but the last days and nights are horrible. My doctor told me, that there are medications which I can use during pregnancy if I need to, but unfortunately she is now on holidays and I can't ask her.

Is anyone using some medication for heart burn?

Have you tried Rennie? Rennie (chewable tablets) is in all of the pharmacies, cheap as chips, adds a touch of calcium to your diet, is absolutely safe in pregnancy and it works. Just stick to the recommended dosage and they are fine to take. If Rennie doesn't give enough relief for overnight, you can take Zantac...even the 24hr relief version. I'd suggest talking to a GP or another OB to be sure though. I took Zantac through the third trimester of my last pregnancy because the heartburn was unbearable. I feel for you!

The Gaviscon worked wonders for me also. Get the chewy tablets if you can - great to have at the bedside.

Gaviscon (even if the tablets contain aspartame and the liquid saccarine, or viceversa, anyway both not healthy in big amounts). Maalox here is difficult to find in the pure version, there is only one with symeticone which is not recommended, at least in Italy (but I realize that our rules back home are much stricter than those applied here, do not know why). After the fifth month I was given Zantac, but I previously had serious gastric conditions. Anyway everything prescribed by the doctors.

I use papaya enzyme. It is all natural and tastes yummy. I have horrible heartburn at the best of times when I'm not pregnant so get it something awful when I am and the papaya enzyme is the only thing that works. I buy it at iHerb.com from the States. It takes only a couple of days to get here. I recommend it to my doula clients also and have heard lots of great responses. Since it's natural you can use it alongside any other regime that you are using. :) edited by SweetLily on 28/12/2011

Ditto on the Gaviscon/Maalox etc. If you find the liquid yucky (like I did), its available in tablet form too that you can chew (though the liquid seems to work quicker). Tablets are either Gaviscon or Rennie. I was given the green signal on both these by my gyn and GP. Post month 3, because of my severe GERD I was also given Nexium as needed but thats something to discuss with your doctor. Feel better!

I had agonizing heartburn until the day I gave birth. yep avoid citrus, bread and pasta, eat lots and lots (and lots and lots) of crisp apples and uncooked vegetables after a meal (lettuce, carrot, etc). Drinking milk doesn't always help and I found nuts made it worse. I think was prescribed maalox (sp??) by my Dr. I also found drinking Sprite helped. Most antacids are safe to take in moderation. Just think, 3 more weeks and you can enjoy eating for the first time in a long time!

I've also been using gaviscon, it works really well. I actually had terrible heart burn for days, took gaviscon once and haven't had to use it again. No more heart burn:)

Thanks, but that does not work for me. It is really getting very bad lately. I even put lots of pillows und my head, so I sleep almost sitting. I am also in my last 3 weeks and usually do not take any medication, but as I am still working, have 2 kids; I need to get sleep :o).
