Hi Ladies,
I'm new to posting here and was hoping to get some advice from you. I'm 16 weeks pregnant with baby no1 and I have my next appointment with my doctor on saturday. Now, I do like my doctor, however she only delivers in MedCare. A few people I've spoken to recently have put me off MedCare and now I getting worried....
After reading some of the threads here, seems like American Hospital is the most popular in terms of everything.

So now I'm seriously thinking of changing doctors.

Do all the doctors who deliver there work directly out of American Hospital, or do they have any clinics up the Marina side of town?

Also, are there any doctor's in particular who you would recommend?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just starting to panic a little.

Thanks

I'm also liking the 'blame the husband' excuse, I'm going to save that one for future dilemmas! As for the disguise, the ones that immediately spring to mind are: Little Bo Peep Where's Wally Roller Girl - (my favorite);)

Hey Liv! Glad to hear you've settled on a hospital! One less thing to think about now!! Im considering changing my Dr but to someone at the same hospital as my current one (infact their offices are literally next door to each other!!) I've been stressing about how to tell my current dr if i do decide to change. how do you reckon you're going to tell yours? :s Are you finally switching to Dr. Elsa? Just tell the other doc I assume Dr. Ibrahim that your DH prefers a female doctor instead. When all fails just blame the husband :) Hahaha!! Great minds think alike sami! was thinking of blaming the husband!! ;) Havent decided yet. have my appt with dr elsa in just over a week but the more i think about it, the more i think i would like to change. asked him a load of awkward questions about things when i saw him the other day but i think the answers i was looking for were prob all pretty obvious, and who's really gona sit there and say "No, im not going to come in to see you if you come in in the middle of the night and no im not going to give you the pain killers you want....." etc! so altho on the surface, all answers seemed perfect, there's still just something niggling at me. will see how it goes with elsa and see what feeling i get from her. dont get me wrong, dr ibrahim has been great and really nice so far, but there's just something im not sure about. Liv, like your idea of a disguise! do you recommend fancy dress ones, or just go in an abaya and completely cover up? ;) (i quite like the idea of fancy dress by the way!!)

Hey LMAO - I think I'm just going to tell my doctor that I was happy with her, however I have decided to go with AH rather than MedCare. Unfortunately, I don't know how to advise you about your 'next door' doctor dilemma....if it was me, I'd probably tell the current doctor that I was leaving the country...then i'd disguise myself for every consultation with her neighbor ;)

Thanks for all the replies ladies, I've changed to American Hospital now and am feeling a lot more relaxed about it now. I have a consultation with my new doctor in a few weeks. Now I just have to let my current doctor know that I won't be using her anymore.....eeeek!

Hi Liv i really don't have much idea about medcare but in my knowledge american hospital staff are quite competent and efficient, i will advice you to try going there, especially if you are having second thoughts about med care, wishing you a safe delivery :)

Congrats Liv on your upcoming delivery and welcome to the world of motherhood I delivered my daughter in American Hosp 2 months ago and could not have been more happy. I had a C-section and was in the hospital for 4 nights and was very happy with the majority of the staff and the nurses there. Also, I had my daughter on 10.11.11 which was a very hectic day in the hospital with 15 other babies born on the same day, however I barely noticed that the nurses were rushed off their feet. I was let down that I didn't get the opportunity to consult with the lactation consultant as she was "too busy" to see us, but other than that I was very pleased and left the hospital feeling looked after. I must give honourable mention to the maternity nurse Sarah and the L&D midwife Emma - very caring ladies that made having my first child more calm and less worrisome. Good luck on your delivery :)

Thanks soo much for your replies Tanya & Starsouthern; it's great to have so much reassurance and positive stories. I guess I'm just panicking a little as this is my first baby. I'll have a chat with my Dr on Saturday, she works out of Nicholas and Asp. I guess a lot of people's bad experiences could be down to the actual birth experience itself, and may not be the fault of the hospital at all. Anyway, thanks again for the replies. Tanya, best of luck to you for your impending delivery :-)

I had my third baby at MedCare the nursing staff and midwife were fab. It was far better than my experience at Latifa (al wasl) All my husbands colleagues have also had their babies there with no complaints. I've had several friends who have had babies at MedCare also with no complaints. Whereas I know several people who have had major issues with AH and are in the process of suing them. You will hear lots of good and bad things about every hospital as TanyaR says what's great for one person might be a nightmare for you. If you are that worried you should go and look around the hospital, but don't forget your Dr is the one in charge and that's who the nursing staff listen to and follow orders from.

Liv Have you had a visit at Medcare (it sounds like your Doctor isn't actually based out of there) Perhaps doing this might appease your concerns. I have said many times on this topic, just remember everyones expectations are different, so what someone considers to be an excellent experience, will be someone elses worst nightmare, so I would be a little hesitant in making a decision based on comments on a forum (with people you don't know). I think you need to have a list of the things that you want or know that you need, and either check with your doctor, and do a visit with Medcare directly and ask during that time. I gave birth at Medcare to DS (2 years ago now though), and my experience was absolutely fine, I am very low maintenance to be honest, so didn't really want their assistance at all, but they did check in regularly, and would have given assistance had I needed it. I am going to be giving birth there again in a few weeks, and I am quite comfortable with returning there based on my experience, and that of a few of my friends that have also been very happy there. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks Sey83, that's reassuring. Maybe I'll just have a chat with my doctor about my concerns when I meet her next. I'm probably just panicking after reading the various reviews :-/

My friend delivered at MedCare and had a fantastic experience, and was all praises for the nurses and facilities. If you're happy with your current doctor then I think that's the most important thing. Also bear in mind that American Hospital is ridiculously expensive in case you have medical insurance that only covers upto a certain limit.
