PND support in Dubai

I'm all fired up with no direction :D.

I really want to set up some kind of support system for PND in Dubai. I understand official charities require a licence and I guess it doesn't need to be an official charity, but I was thinking along the lines of a Facebook group with lots of info on doctors, counsellors and the like and of course a wall where members can post and chat.

Do you think this is a good idea and is it needed? And if so, how do I go about setting it up? I'm a bit dim when it comes to technology.

Thanks all! Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to this thread, it's been a busy week and weekend. I think a simple, straight-to-the-point title will be great. I don't know whether it should be PND or the full words, though - does Post Natal Depression Support In Dubai sound a bit long-winded? And do you think people will search for Post Natal Depression or Post Partum Depression? I think if you get it out there enough, flyers to places where mums would take their new babies (anywhere that does baby weighing, vaccinations etc for a start) it doesn't really matter what you call it, so long as it is reasonably obvious what it does. Very best of luck :)

Sorry DC - has been a busy week or so, so I haven't had a chance to check in - but I am definitely still happy to help out and brainstorm etc as well. I definitely think just some as succinct as possible .. my only question with using PND in the title would be - will people search under the abbreviation do you think? Otherwise, yes just something nice and simple!

Not sure if you were thinking of something stright to the point or something a bit more discreet. How about PND support Dubai? Or Help for mums? Super mums together :)

Hmmm, group name. Anyone got any suggestions? I want it to be easy to find on FB, so it needs to be something relevant and concise :).

I guess you have loads of voluteers DC ... Many hands make light work :D. I think what I'll do to start with is set up an open group on Facebook and note down the group name on here, then anyone who's interested can join and then we can get a playdate/planning meeting sorted.

Wow, thanks all! I had no idea this'd get so many responses! A playdate to brainstorm ideas sounds like the perfect start. I know we can't arrange meet-ups on here, though... what to do?

I think this is a great idea, I know when I was struggling I looked for groups and would have loved to chat to other Mums. A friend of mine tried to set up a support group a while ago at Australian Family Clinic but it didn't really take off. There is a fb group called postnatal depression support: end the stigma http://en-gb.facebook.com/pages/Postnatal-depression-support-end-the-stigma but I believe the lady who manages it has moved to Holland but used to be in Dubai.

I think this is a great idea and would love to help. How about private facebook group. Having Just had my first who is now coming up 6 weeks I now know how hard it is and scary and lonely it is. Having suffered from depression before little one its so important to talk and share how you are feeling. This is a great idea :) problem is i am not technical at all and dyslexic so spelling is awful but would love to be part of this lol.....

This is such a great idea! This Will go a long way in breaking the taboo associated with PND and that hopefully will help more people get the support they need ! I have an engineering degree - not the sharpest bulb since the arrival of my kids but i'm sure the grey matter still works I could set up something in wordpress that would have all the features as a website , and help with facebook etc Maybe those who are keen could have a playdate for the kids and get the ball rolling (while we have the energy)

Great idea, DubaiCat! Why not speak to Sian at Breastfeeding Q&A? You never know, you may be able to pool resources (e.g. get a room to meet in). Good luck xx

Thanks ladies! A website is a great idea :D and I know someone I'm pretty sure would help out on that front. I shall corner Andrea for a cup of tea and pick her brains about the FB group. I guess I just want some kind of starting point to be available for any woman who feels she may have, or be at risk of developing, PND. I know how utterly lost and alone I felt after I had DD and I literally did not know where to turn. I reckon a FB group for those who feel confident joining, and a website with a group of volunteers/members who will reply to messages asking for support and/or information would be a good start :).

Agree with Hiccup - I think this is a fantastic initiative, and would be happy to help out if I can. My only suggestion at this point that might be helpful, is perhaps speaking with Andrea from FGMC and find out what she did for this with setting up the f/b group etc - given it is the same type of group - i.e. support of somekind. I suspect you will definitely need a website to accompany the facebook group - as not everyone looking for help in this situation would feel confident in joining a 'public' group to get information, but would look at information on a site, and perhaps make a discreet enquiry that way. Obviously, it would be a private group on facebook, but people would have to join to access the information, and I guess some people starting out, may not want to identify themselves from the outset. Sorry, that is probably not much help at all - but yell out if/when you do need some helpers!
