Paediatrician says LO needs surgery, while ENT specialist says surgery is needed if symptoms are strong, i.e difficult breathing at night and snoring. He put the responsibility of making the decision on me. I am confused now, one day DS snores, the other day he does not. I am afraid of delaying a necessary surgery as i read enlarged tonsils may affect growth. I also do not want to expose my baby to general anaesthesia unless it is absolutely necessary. Anyone gone through the same? was there dramatic improvement after surgery? any advice?
Thanks in advance.

How old is your child D-J? I can recommend Dr. McEwan. He has a wonderful bedside manner and genuinely cares about your child. My son snored and had sleep apnea so bad, so by the advice of a Dr in...
This is an old thread but I hope I get anwer. May I ask which hosptial this Dr McEwan in, assuming he's still in Dubai? Our son needs to see a doctor.

I have no regrets, my DS had them out and tonsils at 6 and immediately solved his problems! I wish I'd done it a year before. He was a very noisy sleeper with mouth open and would sometimes not breathe for while (which freaked me!) while asleep and also really annoyingly he would get a green snotty nose so easy and it would take weeks to go, always had to take anti biotics to get rid of it and in the end they did not work. I spent hours using a 'snot sucker' to pull it out ! eurghhh The adenoids were enlarged and too much moisture in the nose so always infections and the tonsils were really large and meeting together nearly so I just trusted the Dr. but hesitant about surgery had a couple of opinions and in the end went with Dr Mahmoud Bahgat from MISC who was excellent and honestly we were in the hospital one day got home 11pm that night (as my DS did not want to sleep there) and the next day he was fine, running around the house and happy eating tinned spaghetti ! I was so relieved but most importantly he has improved 100% ! he hardly ever gets a cold even when loads of friends are are sick and I think we've had a slight snotty nose just for one day since the op 2 years ago ! Totally thrilled we went ahead and he is so much happier now ;)) Good luck

My son had his tonsils and adenoids a year ago he was 5. His tonsils were badly diseased and his adeneoids enlarged. The surgery was performed by from Dr J McEwan who I also highly recommend. I was also very nervous about the surgery but it has made a world of difference. Prior to the surgery he was repeatedly getting fevers always on antibiotics, and off from school as a result! He also used to snore and sleep with his mouth open and often had restless nights. Post surgery he is a different boy, sleeps much better has hardly had any fever/colds in the last year, and feels and looks alot more healthy. It really does make such a difference!

How old is your child D-J? I can recommend Dr. McEwan. He has a wonderful bedside manner and genuinely cares about your child. My son snored and had sleep apnea so bad, so by the advice of a Dr in the states, we had his adenoids removed when he was 2 + eight months. 2 months later, we moved to Dubai and within 2 weeks, the snoring and apnea started again, and he also complained of sore throats and ears. :-(. I put off getting it looked into and it only got worse. Couldn't imagine going through another surgery after such a short period of time! When my son saw Dr McEwan, he informed me that my sons Tonsils were "massive" and had to come out. My son finally had the surgery at the end of this past May - 1 year and a month after the first surgery. Guess what- not only were his tonsils the size of an adults, but his adenoids had partially grown back! The recovery with the tonsils is rough. But, my son no longer snores nor does he stop breathing as he sleeps. :-). I was stressed before the surgery and every time I would check on him while he slept. After the surgery, I now feel so relieved and happy for my boy. :-) Good luck!

2 of my kids had tonsils and adenoids out at age 4. Was the best thing we agreed to as thereafter, colds and flu were rare and mild.

Thank you ladies. Booked an appointment with another ENT specialist for a third opinion. If he says DS needs surgery, i will go ahead. I wish i did this earlier as school is about to begin..

I would also get a second opinion. We saw an ENT for our son and he said if they don't grow out of the snoring by age 7, then you should consider operation. He used to have problems breathing and snoring at night, but now (age 5) has gotten so much better. (We asked about this when he was 3, I think.) He still will on occasion snore (if he has a cold or something, or sometimes just the position he sleeps in), but it is infrequent. He also has not had many infections or anything (alhamdulillah), so that is also probably why we were able to wait on any surgery.

Agree with Appletiser, if you're unsure get a second opinion. My DD had her tonsils and adenoids removed over the summer after many repeating episodes of Tonsilitis. It made such a huge difference in her sleep immediately. I don't think I realized just how much she was snoring until she stopped. My older child was the same way. No regrets for either surgery, instead I'm so glad I had it done & that it was done when they were both young. I had mine (tonsils & adenoids) out at 20 and the recovery was a lot longer. Good luck with your decision.

Usually when the adenoids start giving you trouble it is best if you have them removed. They rarely get better, just worse. I had mine removed after 5 repeated infections and each time the pain and suffering got worse. At least when children are little they recover very fast and the pain is not as bad as when you are an adult. My sister also had both her boys' adenoids removed and they really thrived afterwards. No more sick days away from school. I know you don't want to have your little one operated on as no parent want that for their child but if your pediatrician think its time to get it done then perhaps its best to do it. If your unsure, go get a second opinion from another pediatrician to put your mind at ease. Best of luck.
