All places mentioned are great! Golden Bay is busy at xmas/new year time, actually all those places are busy at that time of year bar the sounds. I also suggest looking north of Auckland too. Ohh and Nelson - nice beach and nice shopping. Just asked my dad(he's a long boarder) which are the best beaches in NZ - coromandel and golden bay. THe North Island has warmer water. He also says Dunedin is very nice but the water is cold. Hope this helps.

The Marlborough Sounds and Coromandel are both beautiful! I'd also recommend Golden Bay which is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Nelson. The main township is Takaka and there are loads of beautiful beaches dotted around the coast. The scenery is absolutely stunning and there are many areas that feel quite remote but are still easily accessible and close enough to shops to be convenient. You can't stay on it but Wharariki Beach is one of my favourite places in the world. You reach it by a 20 minute walk over farmland and it's incredible. I haven't used this site before but there are a few holiday homes on it which might help give you a feel for the area: http://www.bookabach.co.nz/__Golden_Bay.cfm

If you like a really laid back, beachy place... I would recommend staying on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is a couple of hours drive from Auckland. There are some lovely white sandy beaches and towns and the scenary is native NZ bush and of course, Pohutukawa trees! Hot Water Beach is one definitely worth seeing! Places worth staying/visiting are Hahei, Whitianga, Whangamata, Tairua, Cooks Beach, but the most upmarket is Pauanui. All have self catering homes/accommodation available (but be in quick as they go very quickly for this time of year). You can have relaxing/romantic walks along the beach. Visit art galleries and learn more about the history in the Coromandel Township. Still enjoy the odd coffee at a cafe. You can hire bikes and bike around the areas as well. A website that may help is www.thecoromandel.com and the Tourism NZ website. All have shops for food (especially for a kiwi BBQ and icecream!) The Coromandel definitely has the relaxed, true NZ feel to it! Ooooh... I wish I was able to go home for the Christmas holidays. I miss those summer holidays down there (on the Coromandel - use to go down there almost every year)!! edited by suznz on 10/07/2011

It doesn't quite fit the bill for somewhere close for food shopping, but for walking, swimming, relaxing, bbq and romance I can highly recommend hiring a holiday home (crib/bach) in the Marlborough Sounds. Access is by water taxi only (or you can hire kayaks and paddle yourself in if you're feeling energetic) and the scenery is just spectacular. You'd do your shopping in Picton and boat everything in via water taxi or kayak. There's also dolphins and other wildlife to be seen. If you choose, for instance, Queen Charlotte, you have a world-class walkway at your doorstep too. If you google "holiday home hire Marlborough Sounds" you should find plenty of agencies who have fully furnished holiday homes for rent - with accommodation for just the two of you, up to room enough for 8-10. Many of them are tucked away in the bush and you can feel like there isn't another soul for miles. There are also various lodges dotted around different sounds, for a more expensive option, and also backpacker lodge-type places. Either way though, I would recommend booking quick smart, because it's hugely popular at Christmas time. Edited to add: we booked a place through these guys about 14 months ago, and everything was superb http://www.kulakrentahouse.co.nz/ edited by Sam7 on 10/07/2011

Hi ladies DH and I are looking to go to NZ over Christmas/New Year. We have previoulsy toured parts of North & South Island and loved it. This time we'd like to stay put - a romantic holiday in a really nice self catering place on the beach - not keen on many neighbours - just want to relax, walk, swim, BBQ and have somewhere relatively close for food shopping. If anyone has any suggestions / knows somewhere that fits the bill, I'd be really grateful. TIA Amanda
