Need to fly back to the UK in mid July for my wedding, and return bginning of Sept. I will be on my own with an 18month old, and thinking about doing a connection as it is sooooo much cheaper. Is it do-able? I've never done a connection before and pretty scared!

Try this software- it will give you direct flight comparison for a whole month of dates over several airlines and connections.... then direct you to the one you pick. http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ Used it before, it's great!

KLM wont let me put Dubai as my starting place. Its only giving me UK airpors. And it getting on my wick!!!!!!!!!!! On the top right hand corner of teh KLM site you should see the words 'change country and language' - click on this and select UAE. I did a stopover via Heathrow (to Aberdeen) on BA and I would never do it on my own again, did it with a 2 year old a few weeks ago via Amsterdam on KLM, it was a very easy stopover. edited by MirdifIngrid on 20/04/2011 Got it! Thank you so much

Don't go via Frankfurt :) That's all I have to say :) Why? It's terribly inhospitable and large and busy and complicated. Husbad, who recently has had to fly Lufthansa quite a few times, hates having to transfer there and he's an aircraft man who usually loves everything about flying, so for him to actually try to avoid an airport, it must be bad :) The last time I was there was a while ago, there was a lot of building work going on and it was just unpleasant. Also, Lufthansa are rubbish for short-haul flights nowadays. Thanks for the heads up. Doesn't sound like the best experience, I'll keep looking :)

If you do Etihad from Abu Dhabi they do a luxury coach transfer from Dubai - their offices on SZ road. You check in there and it's really easy. My friends did it with 3 small kids - I was happy to drive them to Abu Dhabi but the older child loved the idea of a coach - they called me from Abu Dhabi and said it was excellent and they would do it again. 5 hours connection time is pretty hard with a toddler......I wouldn't do it. Remember that at end Aug/beginning of Sept everyone is coming back for the start of schools - if you can avoid those busy weeks you will find that the prices will come down. Thanks for the advice. Would you recommened coming back a bit sooner in Aug? Or a bit later in Sept? And what kind of dates? I'm not aware of the school holidays in Dubai yet Thanks :)

Try using skysanner, my husband has got good deals on Gulf and my mum (or 'me mam' to you Northerners) is arriving tomorrow from Newcastle via amsterdam on KLM, both with very short waiting times. I wouldn't want to spend five hours hanging around an airport (not if I had to stay sober enought to look after a child anyway!). Booking directly with Royal Brunei (direct flights to Heathrow) might also be worth a look

Have you had a look at Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi to Manchester. It's significantly (like 200 quid) cheaper and it's a direct flight. If your OH could take you to the airport down there and pick you up (or I beleive that a taxi will set you back about 250dhs from Dubai, then it's just the same as a Dubai - Manchester flight in essence.

so far we've always flown direct but would maybe consider a connection now that DD has flown a few times BUT 5.30hrs is a very long time especially when you have still get on another plane!! If you have to do a connection I'd def try to find a shorter time if you can?

Also check Qatar airways as their connection in Doha is often quite good and they are usually way cheaper.

I'm completely open on days, dates, times etc. Justneed to be home around 20th July, and then fly back end of Aug beginning of Sept. The direct flights are looking to be about double the cost... I'll shop around a little more and see if there is a shorter connection :)

I'd say to pay the extra and have a direct flight if at all possible. The extra pennies in savings aren't worth having to deal with a bored toddler for the extra hours! Even if they're on their best behaviour, it's seriously knackering!

If its the Leeds Bradford via Amsterdam connection you should be fine, there's only 1hour 30 between flights (when my dad did it last month) he said it was completely stress free and easy enough. We are hoping to do the same in July with our DD who'll be 9 months by then. x I'm thinking the Lufthansa one that stops in Frankfurt. To uk is 5h 30 connection and coming back is 1h 35 connection. Hmmmm
