We got an exemption for my DD last year.
We had an Ed Psych report and the school really supported the recommendation to apply for an exemption, there is a huge amount of admin on the schools behalf to pull together the application.
We had no contact with the KHDA at all, the school handled everything for us, it took about 6 months of processing before we were notified of the exemption, the school had warned us it would take some time, so we were prepared for that.
I think the school's input is probably as equally influential as the Ed Pscyh report.
Silk, is your report from a Dubai based Ed Psych ? I understand that is also very important in how the KHDA view the report. Did your school submit the application or did you do it personally ?
That's just shocking......how can they expect a child, who struggles to write in his own language, to progress in Arabic? Does anyone in there ever stop to think how it affects a child to force them to sit in a class week in week out knowing that its extremely difficult for them and that they will never progress in it ?? It's this attitude of 'we make the rules' and will not look at individual cases that drives me mad! The KHDA are at least 20 years behind.... the lack of understanding, lack of up to date knowledge and lack of empathy is abysmal. I'm so disappointed with what is supposed to be a modern, progressive body :(((
Same for my son, we have been trying for 6 years to get exemption and every year it is rejected, he is dyslexic and has dyspraxia, to be fair he no longer goes to learning support classes since we got an Ed Pshyc on the case she was fantastic and said he would be better in regular classes but with exemption from Arabic to spend time on strategy works (handwriting will never improve) so stuff like organising his work and things like this. He has 1 more year left before he can drop it he only just scraped a pass in his end of year exams with it (no idea how) he's ok with spoken but cannot write Arabic.
When I spoke to the people at KHDA they told me he would have to be classed as having severe learning difficulties to get exemption :-(
Thanks Dubaieye. I actually know more than I ever wanted to about exemptions and dealing with the KHDA. Incompetent doesn't even come close to describing the person we've dealt with. My Dyslexic son was refused one despite all the back up of an Ed Psyc report, Arabic test showing how poorly hes doing in class( despite huge effort from him) and various other reports. He's been doing Arabic for 5 years now and still his most recent report advised that he continue to work on the Alphabet  Yet the powers that be consider he doesn't need to be exempt. You can't give up Arabic till after year 9 so he has another 6 years of 4 periods a week to go. Its the huge big waste of time that bothers me most coupled with the effect on his self esteem. I'm going to try one last time in Sept, failing that, we're moving home where the Dept of Education's knowledge about Special Education Needs is actually up to date and a child's best interest is considered!
Hi Silk - we did, you have to get a report from a medical professional that states the child should be exempt from all foreign languages, as these lesson's at school would be used for extra support lessons.
The school then send this report to KHDA requesting agreement.
I believe this is the only route you can take.
