One huge DON'T that people forget and they love doing it here, is do NOT let them cut your cuticles off! The cuticle is the protective barrier between the nail and the nail bed, without it all sorts of nasties get in there. They wouldn't dream of cutting them off in other countries. Everytime they ask me here I tell them why they shouldn't removed them and to only push down or remove the excess.

I stopped getting my nails (mani or pedi) done when I saw a girl run the used equipment under a tap - shake it - and put it back in a bag and then vacuum close it using their own machine. This is at a well known nail salon in JBR. Nuff said Just cause it looks sterilised and comes out of a sealed bag - does not necessarily mean its been sterilised. I have thought about bringing my own hair brush to the hairdressers too.... but that's a whole other conversation.

Thank you for your replies. When this incident happened my DD rang the salon concerned and spoke to the manager asking for compensation for pain incurred, etc. They asked her to go to her doctor, get a report to say that her toe was indeed infected and said they would pay the doctor's bill. She did this and the doctor confirmed that the toe was infected. She then spoke to the actual owner of the spa whose attitude was appalling. She totally refused to discuss the matter, saying that my DD had made the same complaint on another occasion at a different spa, which is absolutely not true, as she only goes to the spa in question or one other near to where she lives. They also backtracked on their offer to pay the doctor's bill. DD was so incensed that she has now made a complaint to Consumer Protection so it will be interesting to see if this body fulfills it's promises. edited by amelia on 16/03/2011

Just stop them if it hurts! If a place looks dirty, it is. Leave! I've never liked having my nails buffed, I think it makes them look raggedy too quickly afterwards. I just tell the pedicurist ahead of time very clearly what I do and don't want and have never had a problem. Toe fungus is horribly difficult to get rid of, dont risk a treatment at a dirty salon.

The salon I patronize in Jumeirah Palm Strip opens a sealed, sterilized set of tools right in front of the customer. In all my years of have manicures & pedicures there I never had a problem. Not the cheapest of nail spas, but then bargains aren't always bargains...

don't let them cut your toenails down the side. when they poke, if it hurts, stop them. They are disgusting people who do these pedis I had a big fight with AR branch and the receptionist is a total cow who does not care. VP is right. The problem arises when they cut the sides of your toenails. I imagine no pedicurist in Dubai is qualified to do that. Every time I go for a pedicure, no matter where, I will tell the women not to touch the sides of my toenails and I say it in a harsh way and they never do.

Ok, they do this nyc, I wish they did it here. And yes, my friends here have made fun me for this-but they have had infections and I haven't. I take my own kit for the nail tech to use. I know its clean, and its mine. In nyc, a lot of salons, if you are regular, let you leave your own set and they store them in these plastic shoe box size containers on shelves. Each container as the customers name on it, and they only use your kit on you. I know its dorky, but its hygenic and i iwsh places here did it.

Altough I am going there all the time, I totally agree that the attitude of most girls is really bad lately. They don't care and seem sooo bored. However I have regular pedicures and biogel nails there and never had a problem. It sounds really horrible.

So tell me ladies, what are they doing to give you an infection? Is it when they dig right down the side and make you jump out of your skin or is it just a regular old clean up and they are using dirty equipment??? Hoping to avoid this particular pampering joy............... Yes they dug in to deep, maybe the equipment used isnt cleaned!!!!!! I had about 3-4 months of agony. Im going to have my feet done tomorrow, so am praying all will be good.

I agree with the "couldn't care less attitude", the problem is girls who work at that salon have got long working shifts, busy days and late nights, hardly get time to eat or take a break..and of couse, that reflects on their work..unfortunatly that's not the only salon in Dubai..

ouch - feel her pain - i went to a place inthe greens and they cut me so badly on 3 toes i was on antibiotics for 2 weeks - apparently i must have walked through lots of dirt and sand and that is why i got the infection (according to the salon manager who i went to see about at least getting my money back) laughable - i must have walked 100 yards home on very clean pavement!!!!!!

At the same place the same problem occurred for a colleague. I think it might be best to stay away :( I hope your DD's infection clears up soon.

The place next to Starbucks?! If so, I've noticed that their standards have really gone downhill over the last year or so, most of the girls have developed a couldn't care less attitude:(
