Has anyone seen any lately?

I prefer the low salt one but even just the red box would be good. They seem to have been out of stock for ages.

I confess that without meat juices I don't know how to make gravy - we don't use Oxo, so I find the Bisto Best in the Jar (not meat flavoured) with boiling water perfectly ok.. When I have a roast with meat juices I can make a proper gravy with Bisto powder (in the box) and if I want to thicken a casserole or mince I use a sprinkle of the granules in the red drum - as a gravy it's pretty foul !! lol but each to his own - I think we all like to hark back to the way our mums used to feed us :) Meat juices pretty much make the sauce, true! Deglazing is the best, but if you don't have stock in the freezer (or on standby) then it's a tough job, I agree. One way to go though, is the onion route. Caramelise onions in equal parts of butter/oil -- brown/white/whatever onions -- with a bit of water or stock if you have it, plus a bit of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. Really let the onions cook over a constant low eat until they're dark brown and thickening. That's where the flavour comes from. When softened and dark, add some flour and some more stock/water to the mix as the sauce thickens. Even a dollop of cream, for richness, can add a bit of interest and thickness (but before you do that, a splash of wine or even better, brandy, can work wonders). Don't forget to season with pepper and a bit more salt, if needed. Herbs too! Herbs are great. This works for roasts and sausages and all sorts. Just delicious. . edited by LadyBee on 12/11/2014

In fact, when my children were at home I did the same as gravy granules hadn't yet been invented. Yes, I am old, lol These days, I use both methods, depending on what I am making.

Genuinely interested.. Do peopel really use these? Don you just add some flour to pan juices and cook out? Yes. This. However ... when DH wants to eat cr@p that reminds him of being a kid, he invariably requests bangers and mash with fake gravy, so I have a jar of bisto (mix it with boiling water) on standby. Shudder. Still ... makes him smile, and for everything else: I make gravy/jus/etc from scratch. :) the smell of it and the look of it...... it's on a par with drinking nescafe edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 12/11/2014 Worse. Airline coffee in Economy class. Bleargh.

For all who were looking, Bisto Gravy Granules - Regular Red Box, are back in stock in Waitrose, Dubai Marina Mall & Spinney,s Marina Walk. Thanks for posting that. Hopefully they will also have the reduced salt one. Choithram's are now stocking Tesco gravy granules, which I bought, but haven't tried yet.

Used to love a cup of Oxo or Bovril at footy matches. You can't beat Bisto when you want something quick like chips and gravy. Oooh, fancying that for my tea tonight now! edited by Made in Sheffield on 11/11/2014 edited by Made in Sheffield on 11/11/2014

Go with Bisto Best gravy granules, its way easier than the normal granules. You just add hot water and the gravy tastes a lot lot better. I don't think I have ever seen them here What colour pot are they in? :-) Yup Bisto Best comes in a glass jar, my favourite is the Beef ! edited by ClaireBonkersB on 27/10/2014

Bisto gravy granules are available in Geant in Arabian Ranches and I'm sure they had some in Spinneys Motor City last week. Bisto Best usually comes in a glass jar, mainly onion flavour or occasionally you can get beef, chicken or veg

Genuinely interested.. Do peopel really use these? Don you just add some flour to pan juices and cook out? I use it when I am being lazy Izzy. For stews etc I use Oxo as it is just add to water There was a time when you couldn't get red oxos here and the other makes don't taste the same DO people really use those as well? i make my own chicken stock; then reduce it down and freeze in chunks so that i just add one and some water. Not the best person to ask on this stuff - i make my own ketchup ! Your username should be Mrs Beeton haha I cant be bothered to make my own stock etc as I don't eat a lot of meat but when I do and want gravy its easier for me to use Bisto

For stews etc I use Oxo as it is just add to water There was a time when you couldn't get red oxos here and the other makes don't taste the same It depends on what I've been cooking as to how and when I use them. In a casserole, stew, etc. I would add Oxo cubes as a stock while cooking and then cornflour and Bisto powder to thicken. Same method with meat juices. If I didn't have juices/liquid from cooking, then I would use Bisto granules to make a gravy, i.e. sausage and mash. I think the taste is just fine. edited by amelia on 27/10/2014
